Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available in English for the first time, Mihail Sebastian’s classic 1934 novel delves into the mind of a Jewish student in Romania during the fraught years preceding World War II. This literary masterpiece revives the ideological debates of the interwar period through the journal of a Romanian Jewish student caught between anti-Semitism and Zionism. Although he endures persistent threats just to attend lectures, he feels disconnected from his Jewish peers and questions whether their activism will be worth the cost. Spending his days walking the streets and his nights drinking and conversing with revolutionaries, zealots, and libertines, he remains isolated, even from the women he loves. From Bucharest to Paris, he strives to make peace with himself in an increasingly hostile world. For Two Thousand Years echoes Mihail Sebastian’s struggles as the rise of fascism ended his career and turned his friends and colleagues against him. Born of the violence of relentless anti-Semitism, his searching, self-derisive work captures a defining moment in history and lights the way for generations to come—a prescient, heart-wrenching chronicle of resilience and despair, resistance and acceptance.

Book Malcolm Muggeridge

Download or read book Malcolm Muggeridge written by Ian Hunter and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Malcolm Muggeridge traces the varied life of one of the most brilliant and controversial men of the twentieth century. The author, Ian Hunter, was given full access to all of Muggeridge's unpublished material, letters, and diaries. The result is an objective, well-researched, and honest account that is sometimes at variance with Muggeridge's own recollection of events. Ian Hunter captures the humor, the intellect, the rawness of perception, the abandoned honesty of a man engaged in knowing himself, his world, and his God. Malcolm Muggeridge was not merely a "vendor of words," as he invariably described himself, but was also a celebrated author, broadcaster, lecturer, debater, traveller, journalist and television personality, a one-time ardent admirer of the Soviet system, a World War II intelligence agent, and a former agnostic turned committed Christian. To many people, however, Malcolm Muggeridge was admired above all for his superb use of the English language. It is to the credit of Ian Hunter that after reading this biography one has a clearer understanding of an extraordinary man. Dr. Ian Hunter is professor emeritus at the University of Western Ontario. His articles and reviews have appeared in many Canadian and American poublications. He edited two collections of Muggeridge's writings: Things Past and The Very Best of Malcolm Muggeridge; he also wrote a biography of Muggeridge's friend, Hesketh Pearson (Nothing to Repent: The Life of Heskerth Pearson).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s the bestselling book ever. It’s been translated into more than 2,000 languages. It’s changed people’s lives around the world. No, it’s not Thin Thighs in 30 Days . . . it’s the Bible!Yet the Bible remains about as well-understood to many people as your typical software license agreement—and about as exciting. That’s too bad, because the Bible is exciting, and it doesn’t have to be a mystery.Whether you’re new to the Bible and think the book of Job is a guide to finding the perfect career, or your rusty Bible knowledge needs a spit-and-polish, or you just want a fresh look at the book you’ve read so many times, this is the book for you. No dry theological treatise, it’s written in an engaging, humorous style you will enjoy. In short, readable chapters, the authors first answer some basic questions: Who wrote the Bible? Is it accurate? How do you find your way around it? And how did Noah fit all those animals into the ark anyway? (Well, maybe not that, but there’s still plenty of trivia in there.) Then they take you on a guided tour from Genesis to Revelation, summarizing important people, events, and themes. You’ll get a good foundation for understanding and an excitement for reading this most important of books, the Bible.“The title says it all! It’s an inspiring trailer for the Best Book in the World. Read it front to back or just dip in—either way it does the biz.” —Rob Lacey, author of the word on the street, actor and broadcaster

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christmas in Princeton A Christmas in Princeton, is about holly, carols, and joy, but it also celebrates the very reasons for Christmas and its colorful traditions. It is a touching tale of friendship and inspiration, and the mysterious way in which giving can transform the giver. It is a breezy, little tale about the meaning and history of Christmas, and it is full of unexpected thoughtfulness and wisdom for young and old. Tom Cooper is a young lad obsessed with getting whatever he wants. Not only is he self-centered in all his pursuits but he never reflects on the magic inherent in the world around him. That is, until one very special holiday season when a twist of fate brings him to the door of a rickety old shack. It serves as the home of a reclusive old gent who lives the most spartan existence. A friendship develops, and one that brings about a deep and lasting change in Tom. But Tom never fully understands what has happened to him until many years pass and the shack and its habitant are long gone. Though this story was inspired by an old gentleman whose church provided him with a humble dwelling for his remaining years, the names of individuals and places have been changed, and unconnected events have been intertwined to weave the story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manger or Macy's? Americans might well wonder which is the real shrine of Christmas, as they take part each year in a mix of churchgoing, shopping, and family togetherness. But the history of Christmas cannot be summed up so easily as the commercialization of a sacred day. As Penne Restad reveals in this marvelous new book, it has always been an ambiguous meld of sacred thoughts and worldly actions-- as well as a fascinating reflection of our changing society. In Christmas in America, Restad brilliantly captures the rise and transformation of our most universal national holiday. In colonial times, it was celebrated either as an utterly solemn or a wildly social event--if it was celebrated at all. Virginians hunted, danced, and feasted. City dwellers flooded the streets in raucous demonstrations. Puritan New Englanders denounced the whole affair. Restad shows that as times changed, Christmas changed--and grew in popularity. In the early 1800s, New York served as an epicenter of the newly emerging holiday, drawing on its roots as a Dutch colony (St. Nicholas was particularly popular in the Netherlands, even after the Reformation), and aided by such men as Washington Irving. In 1822, another New Yorker named Clement Clarke Moore penned a poem now known as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," virtually inventing the modern Santa Claus. Well-to-do townspeople displayed a German novelty, the decorated fir tree, in their parlors; an enterprising printer discovered the money to be made from Christmas cards; and a hodgepodge of year-end celebrations began to coalesce around December 25 and the figure of Santa. The homecoming significance of the holiday increased with the Civil War, and by the end of the nineteenth century a full- fledged national holiday had materialized, forged out of borrowed and invented custom alike, and driven by a passion for gift-giving. In the twentieth century, Christmas seeped into every niche of our conscious and unconscious lives to become a festival of epic proportions. Indeed, Restad carries the story through to our own time, unwrapping the messages hidden inside countless movies, books, and television shows, revealing the inescapable presence--and ambiguous meaning--of Christmas in contemporary culture. Filled with colorful detail and shining insight, Christmas in America reveals not only much about the emergence of the holiday, but also what our celebrations tell us about ourselves. From drunken revelry along colonial curbstones to family rituals around the tree, from Thomas Nast drawing the semiofficial portrait of St. Nick to the making of the film Home Alone, Restad's sparkling account offers much to amuse and ponder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Trilogy of Christmas Novellas In Mr. Dickens Christmas Eve In London, the famed author is thinking of writing a Christmas story, but he has neither a plot nor a main character, though he has his settingLondon. Whenever he finds himself in such a quandary, Mr. Dickens walks about the citys streets, searching for characters and ideas. Inviting a grumpy, begrudging old friend along by the name of Phineas Frost, he heads into the night on Christmas Eve in 1842. This is Dickens favorite time of year. Families come together and are filled with affection! People everywhere are overcome with generosity, friendship and good cheer! And he finds that the city does not let him down. Before long, he has the characters and ideas for A Christmas Carol, though it will be sometime before he can put the story on paper. The Eighth Choir Celestial and the Birth of the Messiah draws from canonical and noncanonical writings and from speculative Christian theology to spin a warming, affectionate tale of the Nativity of Christ, but from the perspective of the archangel Gabriel. As a member of the eighth choir of celestial beings, his primary responsibility is the deliverance of divine decrees, but he also performs other angelic assignments of extreme importance, including assuring that those things which must happen do indeed occur. The story begins about 15 BCE (Before the Christian Era) when Gabriel visits 5-year-old Mary at the Temple in Jerusalem, and ends with the flight into Egypt. Middle chapters tell the story of Gabriels diligence in watching over Mary from her early childhood to her betrothal, and from the nativity to the flight into Egypt. It also follows Gabriels adventures in assuring the Magi find their way to Bethlehem and are able to outsmart Herod. A Christmas in Princeton, also published separately, celebrates the very reasons for Christmas and its colorful traditions. Young Tom Cooper is preoccupied with getting money to purchase a used bicycle for sale at a shop on Nassau Street in Princeton, but a twist of fate suddenly puts things in proper perspective. A visit to a little shack! A bicycle accident! An epiphany of sorts! A puppy needing a home! Lessons about Christmas! And, finally, the special magic that Christmas brings. Yet, Tom will never fully understand what has happened to him until many years later.

Book The Biology of History Ascent of Women

Download or read book The Biology of History Ascent of Women written by Virendra Pandit and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, our world is becoming incomprehensible. Many people, societies, even countries, behave in strange ways: America turns intolerant toward its own whistleblowers, Arabia leads the world in opening a women-only university, Britain turns largely un-Christian, India increasingly buries herself under a surfeit of democracy, and China under communism. This book is about the emerging mega-picture, a reinterpretation of world history along Darwinian lines. In order to survive in the biological food web, humans needed connectivity, which our religions provided. It goes into the evolution and dissolution of religions, across centuries, as our biggest connecting and integrating factors yet, and how these weakening faiths are now being replaced by new, robust connectors: democracy, science, technology. Of course, we still have many devout around, but their beliefs have shorter shelf life. These silent but gigantic changes are restructuring our societies. With the change in emphasis in the very infrastructure of the human society, the entire edifice is undergoing transformation and renovation—it is nothing less than the Ascent of Women, the Fourth Wave, for the first time since the dawn of civilization some ten thousand years ago. This book is for those who would enter this New World!
