Book Africans and African Americans

Download or read book Africans and African Americans written by Godfrey Mwakikagile and published by New Africa Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of complex relations between Africans and African Americans is the focus of this study. The author looks at the factors which are responsible for this complex nature and which collectively constitute a major obstacle to the improvement of relations between the two groups. He also looks at the prospects and challenges in the quest for solidarity between Africans and African Americans which has remained elusive despite concerted efforts by a number of individuals and a few organisations on both sides through the years to bring the two "peoples" closer. He also examines the nature of the relationship - not just of the relations - between Africans and African Americans. The nature of this relationship goes beyond a shared complexion and the author looks at the profound differences between the two groups across the spectrum which continue to complicate relations between them and even keep them apart.

Book Race Ethnicity and Power

Download or read book Race Ethnicity and Power written by Donald G. Baker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, Race, Ethnicity and Power focuses on contemporary race and ethnic relations in six countries and looks at the historical context by tracing how various forces and factors, such as group power capabilities, shaped present-day ethnic and race relations. It describes how English settlers, and their descendants used their power historically to control major political, economic and social structures, and to shape the cultural policies of these countries. It explains how ethnic and race relations are best understood by assessing the changing power capabilities of Anglo and non-Anglo groups, and shows how changes in group relations are the consequence of two major factors: modification in group power resources and capabilities, and changes in situational factors. This book will be of interest to students of sociology, political science, ethnic studies and international relations.

Book Ethnicity and the Long term Perspective

Download or read book Ethnicity and the Long term Perspective written by Alexander Keese and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate about ethnicity in sub-Saharan Africa has come to an uneasy consensus in the 1990s, but it has to be asked if we are really close to a solution. How can comparative and historical views help to inform the debate? In this work, seven scholars bring in a long-term perspective to ethno-cultural solidarities, which they explore within a multi-disciplinary framework. This return to the 'heart of the ethnic group', twenty-five years after Elikia M'Bokolo's and Jean-Loup Amselle's path-breaking reinterpretation of ethnicity in Africa, argues for a reappraisal of approaches to ethnicity that have been adopted in recent decades. Focusing on two major geographical regions of the African continent - Senegambia including Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone, and the area of Southern Tanzania and the northern half of Mozambique -, the chapters in this volume provide a new historical interpretation of the processes of identity-building in sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Ethnicity In Modern Africa

Download or read book Ethnicity In Modern Africa written by Brian M. du Toit and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen essays written for this volume reflect the increasing importance for social scientists of ethnic, rather than physical or tribal, criteria for classifying modern population groups. The authors—from South Africa, the United States, South West Africa (Namibia), Nigeria, and Scotland—cover most of Africa south of the Sahara. They consider the range from large national population groupings to small-scale societies attempting to maintain their social boundaries, and discuss such topics as emergent nationalism, ethnic divisiveness, social distance, voluntary association, and the role of women. The first section is concerned with particular communities, peoples, and ethnic groups, and treats traditional tribal groupings as well as communities delineated on phenotypic grounds. In the second section, the focus turns to modern situations of interaction; the two major themes discussed here are situational ethnicity and situational realignment. The third section deals with color, one of the physical criteria of ethnic identification; here the authors discuss the political and legal implications of a system based on color. The last essay reports on current changes in attitude and organization within the countries of white-ruled southern Africa.

Book Ethnic Diversity in Eastern Africa

Download or read book Ethnic Diversity in Eastern Africa written by Kimani Njogu and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most of Africa, there is evidence of politicised inter-ethnic rivalry and ethnic mobilisation to acquire, maintain or monopolise power as competition for resources intensify. This volume demonstrates how ethnic diversity can be managed at a number of levels in order to improve the lives of citizens. As the contributors show, ethnicity as an identity is fluid and malleable. It can be deconstructed in order to reduce its saliency. Evidently, strong ethnic affliation has also been viewed as a major barrier to human and economic development although ethnically bound welfare organisations do influence the economic and social life of citizens especially in the rural areas, In most of Africa, it is through ethnic identification that competition for influence in the state and in the allocation of resources becomes apparent. Occasionally, governments have sought to address this challenge through ethnic and regional balancing in political appointments. But this does not always work. Drawing on experiences from Eastern Africa and beyond, the contributors discuss how ethnic diversity can be a resource for the region.
