Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heredity, environment, the role of infectious agents, and other influences have been cited within a multiplicity of factors of possible relevance to the problem of neoplasm etiology. In some cases, such as that of retinoblastoma the influence of hereditary factors has been clearly established. The influence of genetic factors in cerebral tumour development has been under discussion since as early as 1896 when Besold reported two sisters suffering from brain tumours. Although much more is now known about the classification, prognosis, and treatment of these tumours, and a number of familial cases have been reported, the present data are insufficient to permit conclusions regarding the influence of hereditary factors in the etiology of most types of cerebral neoplasms, and research in this area is urgently required. Research on familial brain tumours must still be largely based upon the cumulative case histories which have been reported. Although a number of papers contain historical reviews, some in tabulated form, the actual data have not been readily available to the researcher, each investigator being obliged to compile anew all reports published on the subject over an 80 year period. This book represents an attempt by the present authors to assemble the pertinent data on individual cases of familial brain tumours published since 1896. For this purpose the essential information from the original articles in German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Czechoslovakian have been translated into English.

Book Classification of Brain Tumours Die Klassifikation der Hirntumoren

Download or read book Classification of Brain Tumours Die Klassifikation der Hirntumoren written by Klaus J. Zülch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report which follows constitutes the proceedings of a sym posium on the classification of brain tumours held in Cologne in 1961. It contains the contributions and discussions reported as far' as possible in a word-for-word manner, in the hope not only of providing out of the thoughts of the participants stimulation for further research, but also to indicate the atmosphere which prevailed during the symposium in which many completely opposed views were able to be expressed without any feeling of embarrassment. This freedom of expression is already obvious in the discussion of a proposed classification of brain tumours for the Unio Internationalis Contra Cancrum (UICC). The symposium endeavoured here to pro duce a positive criticism in order to arrive at a significant and practical conclusion viz a general, internationally acceptable classi fication. It was necessary to accept a degree of compromise even if the classification suggested did not in every point correspond to all the personal views of the various participants. The second part of the symposium was concerned with a critical discussion of numerous brain tumour problems, for example the scientific delineation of tumour groups; the discussion was started by general reviews on the biology of brain tumours so that the later discussion could cover as wide a ground as possibly. Here also we all felt that a great stimulus for future work arose from the discussion.

Book Brain Oncology Biology diagnosis and therapy

Download or read book Brain Oncology Biology diagnosis and therapy written by M. Chatel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Meeting on Brain Oncology in Rennes was organised in honor of Jean Pecker, to pay tribute to his contribution to the development of neurological sciences and to take stock of the current state of knowledge on brain tumors, a domain in which the role of neurosurgery has been and will continue to be primordial. During the two-day conference, the major themes of brain oncology studies, both fundamental and clinical, were examined: oncogenesis, tumoral markers and immunology, metabolic and diagnosis imaging, prognostic factors and therapeutic strategies. The large number and high quality of participations resulted in a genuinely synthetic view of current advances in research, of which this book presents the essentials. We have attempted both to preserve the richness of scientific exchanges which occurred and to publish a great many oral and poster communications. The book respects the organization of conference sessions, and thus reflects the importance accorded to glial tumor studies. This may seem disproportionate given their frequency of occurrence in proportion to total numbers of intracranial tumor processes, but their gravity and quasi-total resistance to current therapeutic methods are ample justification. Moreover, this is the domain in which hopes of progress are beginning to appear, and it is becoming possible to envisage treatment based on recently established fundamental knowledge.

Sister John's cloistered life of peace and prayer has been electrified by ever more frequent visions of God's radiance, leading her toward a deep religious ecstasy. Her life and writings have become examples of devotion. Yet her visions are accompanied by shattering headaches that compel Sister John to seek medical help. When her doctor tells her an illness may be responsible for her gift, Sister John faces a wrenching choice: to risk her intimate glimpses of the divine in favor of a cure, or to continue her visions with the knowledge that they might be false-and might even cost her her life.

Scattered on the floor around him were objects from his nightstand: a glass of water, clock, watch, lamp-all on the floor. He was in a haze but still knew that something wasn't right. Adam hurriedly picked everything up, tried to dry the carpet from the water, and then went back to sleep. He later woke up with a vague idea of what had happened in the night-and also with a mild black eye and bruised face. Thus started the trial of-and for-Adam Holland's life. After discovering that Adam had a brain tumor, his doctors wanted to do further testing. The final blow came when one of the neurosurgeons walked into the room where Adam and his parents were waiting and told them that the tumor was malignant. He had cancer. Out of Adam's cancer came Anchored in the Storm, this devotional book for those who are suffering. Distress and anguish take on many forms, including not just physical but also emotional, economic, and relational. The goal of this book is to encourage and exhort your faith in Christ during the hardest, darkest, and most difficult times you may ever face in this life. Adam Holland shared his own story so that you would get to know, at a deeper level, your Creator and the glorious purposes and incredible destiny He has for you.

Book Stay Safe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emma Hine
  • Publisher : Sarabande Books
  • Release : 2021-01-05
  • ISBN : 1946448699
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Stay Safe written by Emma Hine and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the center of this stellar collection are three sisters and their imaginative fear of grief. Their great-uncle was bitten by a shark, their mother has a brain tumor, their neighbor hangs himself from a tree—and to cope with these very real terrors, the oldest sister creates an intimate fantasy world. We hear stories of a mountain lion that slaughters a deer, a transparent body washed up on a beach, a selkie who ventures to shore and becomes their mother: “On land her pelt was heavy / like stewed velvet, so she taught herself / to take it off.” The sisters’ environment of ocean and sand, forests and farmhouses, forms a lush backdrop to many of these poems. But later, as the speaker ages, we find ourselves in the mountains, in an art museum, in a spacecraft where a recorded voice “has the soft accent of someone only a generation or two removed from Earth.” The voice in these poems is the perfect mix of grief and imagination, quiet and explosion. Stay Safe is delicate and extraordinary, a powerful debut.
