Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Gospels The nineteenth century has been an eventful period in the study of the Bible as well as in other departments of learning. Ancient documents of great importance have been discovered, and many very fruitful investigations have been made upon special points, by the aid of which we are enabled to attack with larger resources and a better hope of success the great problems that still remain unsolved. But the condition of New Testament study is in one point very different from that of Old Testament study. There is no dominant theory before us like that of Graf and Wellhausen, who, by putting the Prophets before the Law, have enabled us for the first time to see the history of Israel in its true perspective. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Jesus Christ, Vol. 2 of 2 We have already noticed the remarkable occurrences which happened while Christ was on the road to Jerusalem. To-day, we behold him arrived there, and treated in a manner that fully justified his delay. After he had suffered his brethren to go away without him, under the impression, that he might, perhaps, not come at all; and after he had sent the seventy disciples through all the country, and they had diminished materially his company, and his publicity; we may suppose he sent forward his twelve Apostles, to keep the feast according to the law, and then lingered on the road, till the Jews were in the midst of the feast. At length Jesus arrived, and we have now to notice, I. His appearance in the temple. The crowd were probably excited to talk about him, by seeing his brethren there; and when these were questioned, whether their relative would be at the feast, they probably said that they had tried to persuade him, but in vain. This was all the answer that could be given to the question, " Where is he?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Its Own Witness: The Hulsean Lectures for 1873 BY the changes of recent years the Hulsean Lectures have been reduced from twenty to eight, and from eight to four. The limit of four lectures is manifestly too narrow for the detailed discussion of any important subject or the development of an elaborate argument; and the fact of the vaca tion being selected as the time for their delivery, - as was the case with the present lectures, which were appointed for the last two Sundays in Lent, Good Friday, and Easter Day, when, for the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Church Professor harnack's famous volume of lectures, What is Christianity? And the Abbé Loisy's epoch making book, The Gospel and the Church, serve to mark on opposite sides the progress of modern theo logical thought. Both in their similarities and by their contrasts these two books may help an in quirer find his way amid the confusions of new biblical investigations to clearer appreciations of the origins and values Of Christian institutions and be liefs. The two conceptions of Christianity which are presented in these volumes confront each other like separate cliffs; if one takes his stand at the top Of either of them he will find no bridge across to the other; but if he follows the way which runs between them at the bottom, he will be led out to a larger conception of Christianity in which their separation disappears. Fundamentally, the revolt of Hamack from received Protestant dogmatism, and the protest of Loisy against Official Romanism, have, more than at first may appear, a common ground in historical. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Second Coming and Kingdom of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ The day dawn, and the day - star arise in your hearts. This does not mean till the day of the Lord Jesus shine upon the world. Such an interpretation de stroys the entire value of this part of the sentence; indeed, it leads souls into, and leaves them under, the confusion of the Christian hope with the prophetic word Prophecy, it is intimated, is good, and to be heeded; but then there is something better still. You are quite right in profiting by it. Christianity, and that hope which it puts before the soul, in no wise impairs the worth of the ancient oracles, but rather confirms them, as we surely know; but then Christianity does bring in not only a more blessedly revealed and known foundation for the soul, not only a higher walk for the believer now, but as the foundation becomes deeper and enlarged, as the walk becomes more heavenly, so does the h0pe proportionately rise and brighten. Therefore he says, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hea Indeed, it is never said that the dv star rises upon the world, nor could it have any just sense. It is really a question of the heart, and of daylight dawning, and the day-star arising there. Is it not evident that the power of the Holy Ghost is meant, the Christian now to lay hold of the hope proper to him, as one belonging to Christ in heaven? When the believer is led by grace into his due place of liberty as a Christian, the light which shines round about him is no mere glimmering of a.
