Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on South Africa: Delivered Before the Philosophical Institute Edinburgh, Jan; 6& 9, 1880 I could not run this risk. I decided after some reflection that for once I would leave the history of the past, and turn to a question of present interest and the present time. I may make mistakes in talking about it, but if I do there is no danger of your detect ing me. I wish there was. For the South African question is a very knotty one indeed, and the knots can only be untied when the British people will please to pay attention to it. We can hardly say that it is of no importance to us. We have just been killing about twenty thousand people in South Africa - people who had done us no harm we only feared that perhaps they might do us harm. We have annexed a country as large as France, which belonged to Dutchmen. Dutchmen do not like to have their independence taken from them any more than we do, and nobody exactly knows why we did it. I believe that in our hearts we are sorry now that we annexed it at all, and would be glad to get rid of it again, if we only knew how to get rid of it without seeming ridiculous to the rest of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on South Africa: Delivered Before the Philosophical Institute Edinburgh, Jan; 6& 9, 1880 Ladies and Gentlemen, - An invitation to lecture before the Philosophical Institution at Edinburgh is a high compliment, but also an embarrassing one. You have been addressed, and will be addressed during this session, by many able speakers on weighty matters, scientific or literary. It has been difficult for me to select a subject on which I have anything to say which can deserve a place in so distinguished a series. I turned over in my mind various periods of Scotch history, hoping to find something which might answer the purpose. I thought at one time I would make a lecture out of the Scotch Statute-book. There is pleasant reading in that book, only it is a little dry. Old statutes are like the ivory carvings which are found in Egyptian and Assyrian tombs. Book South Africa and the World

Download or read book South Africa and the World written by Amry Vandenbosch and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comprehensive study of the foreign policy of South Africa, Amry Vandenbosch focuses attention not only on some of the major problems of a white-dominated African country but also, in wider scope, on three of the chief issues of mid-twentieth century: colonialism, race relations, and collective security. South Africa has inaugurated an outward-looking policy. Its relative strength among the African nations, combined with the domestic difficulties experienced by those weaker nations, has caused Pan-Africanism to lose much of its force and has enabled South Africa to exert even more vigorous leadership on the continent, particularly south of the Sahara. South Africa nevertheless faces many problems, and its outward-looking policy has met with rather limited success. Faced with all its difficulties, dead-end roads, and a strong world opinion condemnatory of apartheid, Vandenbosch argues South African whites must begin to doubt the wisdom of their racial policy and come to accept the idea of its modification.

Book excerpt: In Resistance: Sol Plaatje and South Africa, Shane Moran studies Sol Plaatje, the founding secretary of what was to become the African National Congress (ANC), and his work within the context of colonial politics and resistance. Arguing for a return to the study of one of the founders of anti-racism, Moran explores issues of land reform, human rights, and the legacy of colonialism. Through an in-depth analysis of Plaatje’s resistance to racial domination, Moran examines the nature of the struggles that continue within and beyond South Africa today. In particular, Moran analyzes events from the beginning of the previous century that shaped post-1994 South Africa, such as the resolution of the ANC to expropriate land without compensation.

Book History of South Africa since September 1795

Download or read book History of South Africa since September 1795 written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1908 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George McCall Theal (1837-1919) was a prolific South African historian and civil servant. After working as a missionary between 1875-1880 he was appointed magistrate of Tamacha before taking a position as a clerk in the government and became Keeper of the Cape Colony Archives. He was appointed Colonial Historiographer in 1891. These volumes, first published in 1908, contain Theal's detailed history of South Africa between 1795-1894. Focusing on the political history of the country, Theal explores the British control of Cape Colony and the reactions of the Dutch setters to increasing British immigration, discussing the political consequences of the establishment of the various Boer Republics and the growth of Zulu power in South Africa. These volumes provide valuable details on the political history of South Africa, and reveal contemporary attitudes towards the history and ideas of colonisation. Volume 5 covers the colonies between 1854-1894.
