Download or read book Two Days After Christmas written by Lynn Payne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas was beautiful at our home that year, just like that glorious first Christmas when Jesus was born. He came to save us from our sins, but what about our sorrows? Two days after Christmas, my precious son Jacob died in an accident. The Holy Spirit had already prepared me, but still I wept what seemed like a million tears. Like Rachel, my voice rose up in “lamentation, weeping, and great mourning . . . weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted, because they are no more” (Matthew 2:18). The weeping of Rachel is first noted in Jeremiah 31:15 during a time of captivity for God’s people. Many are taken captive by sin, addictions, rebellion against God, and the pain of injustices. Yet I have found that no matter what your loss, you can stop weeping and begin to live again. If you put your faith in him, God will give you beauty for ashes.

Download or read book I Will Not Leave You Comfortless written by Jeremy Jackson and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir of “a happy childhood in rural Missouri just before the digital revolution [is] a sweet record of a time and a place that was not Always On.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spanning one year of the author’s life—1984—I Will Not Leave You Comfortless is the intimate memoir of a young boy coming to consciousness in small-town Missouri. The year will bring ten-year-old Jeremy first loves, first losses, and a break from the innocence of boyhood that will never be fully repaired. For Jeremy, the seeming security of his life on the family farm is forever shaken by the life-altering events of that pivotal year. Throughout, he recalls the deeply sensual wonders of his rural Midwestern childhood—bicycle rides in September sunlight; the horizon vanishing behind tall grasses—while stories both heart-wrenching and humorous, tragic and triumphant, Jackson weaves past, present, and future into the rich Missouri landscape. “I could smell the mulberries crushed underfoot and the sweet steam of the cinnamon roll Grandma heated in the toaster oven just for Jeremy, hear the ever-increasing volume of an approaching late-spring storm . . . The year of Jeremy Jackson’s life on which he meditates in I Will Not Leave You Comfortless marked his transition from the perfect happiness of childhood to the much more complex reality of adulthood. It records, as well, the abiding comfort that remains—family, home and love.” —Wichita Eagle “Jackson writes about Missouri as the young Hemingway wrote about Michigan: with a clear eye; with hard-edged nostalgia; and (here’s the thing) with brilliance.” —Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the Best Books of the Year by Buzzfeed, San Francisco Chronicle, and Publishers Weekly Winner of the Rome Prize (John Guare Writer’s Fund) “This remarkable memoir is written with extraordinary care, intelligence, and honesty.... In short, it’s fully alive.” —Phillip Lopate For Will Boast, what looked like the end turned out to be a new beginning. After losing his mother and only brother, twenty-four-year-old Boast finds himself absolutely alone when his father dies of alcoholism. Numbly settling the matters of his father’s estate, Boast stumbles upon documents revealing a closely guarded secret his father had meant to keep: he’d had another family entirely, a wife and two sons. Setting out to find his half-brothers, Boast struggles to reconcile their family history with his own and to begin a chapter of his life he never imagined. “Riveting, soulful, and courageously told” (Maggie Shipstead), Epilogue is the stunning account of a young man’s journey through grief in search of a new, unexpected love.

Download or read book Ordinary People written by Phil Boast and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The village of Middlewapping, a small and ancient rural backwater of southern England, forms a stage upon or within which the characters in this tale live out their various lives. Each has come to the village via a very different road; for some, such as Sally who works in a bank in the town, to own a house around the village Green has fulfilled a lifetimes' ambition, whilst others such as Rose, a prostitute from one of the less salubrious parts of London, arrive here quite by chance and not of their own volition. And each brings to the tale the manifestation their own experience, and how they now see the world. They are as disparate in age as they are in background; from Will and Emily who are on the cusp of adulthood, to Daphne, in the twilight years of her life. In their middle years are Percival, a former city banker and drug addict, who has come to seek refuge from his former life, and Keith, who with his lady, Meadow, lives on a bus on the outskirts of the village, and yet all are or become in their own way dependant upon one another to gain passage through the business of life, and alliances are formed which would seem unlikely, unless one knew the story. And so, from the very mundane to the very significant, 'Ordinary People' attempts to chart the progress of these people; their loves, their ambitions, and their own very individual ways of living out their lives. There may be irony in the book title, the reader will decide this for themselves, but however this may be perceived, the author has done his best to bring each character to life, and to present them in their stark manifestation, and in their collective manifestation of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Max reappeared in the doorway of the inn, and the crowd on deck shouted in delight as he stopped, bowed to his audience, and took a huge gulp from the open bottle. Gretchen shuddered against Helgas shoulder, and Hermies fist pounded the rail as he muttered between clenched teeth, Come on, Papa. Its all right. The captain will wait. Paul breathed into his cupped hands. The ship began its laboring surge as the black, swirling water of the Weser River churned up waves that grew from undulating ripples to frothy caps. Still Max whirled and danced and tipped his bottle as he headed almost casually toward the departing ship. The laughter died, and in a body the crowd began coaxing him to jump, make one mad leap, to entertain them one more time. Helga pulled the children tighter against her, holding them, willing them not to watch. And then Max jumped, tossing the empty bottle into the water as his body floated, suspended, arms extended, fingers spread, wildly grasping for the slowly arching rail. His face suddenly twisted to disbelieving shock as his fingers missed their grip, and he dropped like a slender arrow straight down into the roiling, icy water without causing the slightest splash. After three long months at sea, Helga Heinrich and her four children sail into the thriving Indianola seaport on the Texas coast in 1853 to begin a new chapter.
