Book excerpt: In 1854, Wilhelm F. Kempe, 26, and his sister Auguste, 20, left their native Kingdom of Saxony in Europe for a new home in Texas. Remaining in Saxony were their aging, widowed father and a 10-year-old sister and an 8-year-old brother -- people who struggled for decades to reconcile their lives in the Old World with that of their relatives in the New World. Their letters to Wilhelm tell, often painfully, of the emotional toll this disruption took on the lives of family and friends who remained in the Fatherland. As the only connection betwen his family in Europe and his family in America, Wilhelm carried the weight of both. Over half a century he coped with all of their needs, as well as the Civil War and the desires of others who wanted to leave Europe and join him in Texas -- challenges that come alive through the letters they wrote.

Download or read book Henry Clay and the War of 1812 written by Quentin Scott King and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any biography of Henry Clay's 46 year political career quickly becomes entangled with his monumental, though youthful, political leadership of the War Hawks in urging the Madison Administration to arm the United States for war with Great Britain. He continued to advise in the war's progress and ended by being one of the five distinguished Americans to treat for peace with a difficult team of mediocre British envoys. There has been no detailed treatment of his major role in this early American war until this present work.

Book History of Kentucky

Download or read book History of Kentucky written by William Elsey Connelley and published by . This book was released on 1922 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is the result of consultation and cooperation. Those engaged in its composition have had but one purpose, and that was to give to the people of Kentucky a social and political account of their state, based on contemporaneous history, as nearly as the accomplishment of such an undertaking were possible. It has not been the purpose of those who have labored in concert to follow any line of precedent. While omitting no important event in the history of the state, there has been a decided inclination to rather stress those events that have not hitherto engaged the attention of other writers and historians, than to indulge in a mere repetitionot that which is common knowledge. How far they have succeded in this purpose a critical public must determine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “filibuster” often brings to mind a senator giving a long-winded speech in opposition to a bill, but the term had a different connotation in the nineteenth century—invasion of foreign lands by private military forces. Spanish Texas was a target of such invasions. Generally given short shrift in the studies of American-based filibustering, these expeditions were led by colorful men such as Augustus William Magee, Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara, John Robinson, and James Long. Previous accounts of their activities are brief, lack the appropriate context to fully understand filibustering, and leave gaps in the historiography. Ed Bradley now offers a thorough recounting of filibustering into Spanish Texas framed through the lens of personal and political motives: why American men participated in them and to what extent the US government was either involved in or tolerated them. “We Never Retreat” makes a major contribution by placing these expeditions within the contexts of the Mexican War of Independence and international relations between the United States and Spain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the times of the land we call Round Top, one thought has constantly prevailed. This is a land of opportunity. The land was formed over the centuries into flat land and hills by rivers beyond and by creeks and springs, while waiting for animals and mankind to arrive. This land is located in the northeastern margin of today's Fayette County, and lies on a high hill that looks down toward the south into the bottom lands of a crossing. The struggle on this small piece of land began with the movement of animals that needed a convenient place for water that was crossable during the seasons. This perfect crossing flows through the south eastern side of the present town of Round Top located between two high hills. This crossing was the home of native American Indians, American settlers and German immigrants.
