Book excerpt: Here, for the first time in one volume, are Scaring the Crows and On the Edge of Twilight, Gregory Miller's first two collections of powerful, often wondrous short stories. Together, these 43 tales create a dusky landscape where, in part, the elderly are gifted with otherworldly youth, spiders hide in human form, and ghosts outlast the Earth...where trees remember past lives, scarecrows walk at midnight, and millions of people live through one man's breath. It is a magic place. And a haunted one. Effortlessly spanning numerous genres and styles, Miller imbues his tales with terror and warmth, malevolence and nostalgia...the reason Ray Bradbury once wrote, "Gregory Miller is a fresh new talent with a great future."

The barrier is breached, and after the last armies of the world fell to dragons' fire and demons' ire, the only ones standing between predators and prey are the foot soldiers of a power-mad Church. Welcome to the Books of Future Darkness - Patrik Sahlstrom's tales of a world gone mad, where desperate people do everything to survive after the magical apocalypse. Here, packs of werewolves hunt the countryside, corrupt Cardinals rule their fiefdoms like Machiavellian princes, and young men in Italian power armor are sent out to bite off more than they can chew. Frost Moon is the first installment of the chronicles of the errant war witch Elisabeth, raised by the Church to battle both the legions of darkness and anyone suicidal enough to stand in the way of their hegemony. Now she is on the run - but will her wits and her magic be enough to escape the clutches of the Cardinal of Oslo? Read more on www.futuredarkness.com"

Book Butterfly Whispers in Twilight

Download or read book Butterfly Whispers in Twilight written by Sandra-Lee Hutt and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lovella is the great-great-grandmother to the Townes family generations. It was during the 1800s that Lovella survived a vicious attack by a ferocious feline that wandered from a forest in Asia. This attack occurred during Lovella's third pregnancy of the first male child born into this family. This attack occurred in the backyard of her home while she was roasting pig, a cat ran toward her from the woods and knocked her down to the ground. Her screams were heard, and a pack of wolf dogs chased the feline away. The attack was so vicious it left permanent physical and mental scars on Lovella. The birth of the child was full-term although questioned by the doctor as to why the baby was born hissing like a cat and born with teeth and the "eyes of a tiger." Each time the baby boy named Timothy hungered for milk and food, his cry sounded like a "cat's meow." As the years went by, the child grew to speak well. He would experience temper tantrums all continued past the age of two. The family kept him close to home and never revealed to any family members or friends of the attack that Lovella experienced during her pregnancy. His favorite play area was in the backyard, as he was often seen scratching the bark on every tree in the yard. To this day, his name "Timothy" is embarked in a tree that still stands. There would be nights when Timothy would awaken and go to the kitchen pulling fruits from the refrigerator leaving large bite marks in unpeeled fruits and vegetables. Evaluations and testing from therapists, psychologist, and psychiatrist all revealed that little Timothy was born with a gene that carried a trait in the DNA that all males born into this family in future generations would carry this gene can never be removed.

Book Extinctions Twilight of the Species

This book was released on 2021-11-17T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two journalists travel to an island in the Arctic Circle where scientists are searching for fossils of extinct animals. Like all journalists, they have a lot of questions: how is it possible for an entire species to completely disappear? Word has it that we're in the midst of a sixth mass extinction, but what exactly does that mean? How did the first five happen? What is the scientific definition of an extinction? Alexandre Franc adeptly illustrates the narrative by Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu, a specialist in natural sciences and doctor of biological oceanology. Panafieu, who has already authored a number of popular science books, gives a clear explanation of what mass extinctions are, cleverly comparing past extinctions with the one we are witnessing now. The two authors present us with a clear, intelligent, and lighthearted perspective on a fascinating phenomenon.
