Download or read book Twentyfive X Herzog de Meuron written by Stanislaus Von Moos and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gorgeous, gargantuan selection of Herzog & de Meuron's key projects, with documentation by leading photographers, essays and archival materials The complete works of Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron comprise around 600 buildings in nearly 40 countries. This book is a personal selection by art historian Stanislaus von Moos and architect Arthur Rüegg of 25 of the most important projects from throughout Herzog & de Meuron's career--from Tate Modern in London, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Ricola Storage Building in Laufen to the parking structure at 1111 Lincoln Road in Miami. Through photographs by Balthasar Burkhard, Hannah Villiger, Margherita Spiluttini, Iwan Baan, Thomas Ruff and Wolfgang Tillmans, along with detailed technical data, plans and bibliographic references, Twentyfive x Herzog & de Meuronencapsulates all central aspects of the work of these influential architects. Two comprehensive essays reveal Herzog & de Meuron's working methods: von Moos explores the influence of perception in painting, sculpture and photography on their practice, while Rüegg examines their ambivalent view of the built world and how it is expressed from project to project. The book also includes previously unpublished photographs by Pierre de Meuron and Jacques Herzog's postcard collection--unexplored visual archives with a direct influence on their architectural work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any of their contemporaries, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are challenging the boundaries between architecture and art. Natural History explores that challenge, examining how the work of this formidable pair has drawn upon the art of both past and present, and brought architecture into dialogue with the art of our time. Echoing an encyclopedia, this publication reflects the natural history museum structure of the exhibition which it accompanies, organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Models and projects by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as by other artists, are structured around six thematic portfolios that suggest an evolutionary history of the architects' work: Appropriation & Reconstruction, Transformation & Alienation, Stacking & Compression, Imprints & Moulds, Interlocking Spaces, and Beauty & Atmosphere. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects have contributed essays, including Carrie Asman, Georges Didi-Huberman, Kurt W. Forster, Boris Groys, Ulrike Meyer Stump, Peggy Phelan, Thomas Ruff, Rebecca Schneider, Adolf Max Vogt, and Jeff Wall.

Book excerpt: Standing on the south bank of the Thames opposite the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's vast brick edifice, with its tower of 325 feet, dominates the scenery and ranks among the most imposing structures of central London. Yet, after its closure in 1981, the Bankside Power Station was rendered invisible to the public eye by its redundancy and the frequent threat of demolition. The reopening of Bankside in May 2000 as London's first national gallery of modern and contemporary art restores the grandeur of Scott's design and regenerates a much neglected area of the city. The conversion to art gallery by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron is marked by its extreme simplicity, at once enhancing the physical presence of the original architecture and completely transforming its derelict and impenetrable interior into an accessible, light-filled exhibition center. The tremendous affinity of contemporary art with ex-industrial settings has inspired a design that retains the monumental scale of the Turbine Hall and skillfully offers a range of spaces for widely differing types of art on the multiple floors of the Old Boiler House. This publication follows the story of the Bankside project and presents a stunning photographic account of every stage of its transformation. Including an interview with Jacques Herzog and Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate, it provides a detailed analysis of Herzog and de Meuron's design and redefines the Tate's role within contemporary culture.

Book excerpt: How to deal with historic buildings has long been a core issue of the international architectural discourse. Herzog & de Meuron began addressing the potential of existing structures very early on: the maintenance and alteration of buildings are among the key strategies of the architects. For the Park Avenue Armory in New York, Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new model for dealing with monuments. The historical building was opened in 1881 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as a meeting place and training ground for the National Guard, and boasts a rich mixture of different styles. Herzog & de Meuron developed a multifaceted strategy for the transformation of the building, now used as a cultural center, that allows for a combination of restoration, transformation, and innovation. From the exposing of historic structures to the addition of new elements, the architecture gained new vibrancy from the considered entanglement of different aspects. In the current debate, this departure from the practice of historic preservation in the United States is, beyond its value as an actual example, a unique contribution that unfolds in close reference to material. It is exemplary and groundbreaking.

Book The Structural Basis of Architecture

Download or read book The Structural Basis of Architecture written by Bjørn N. Sandaker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about structures that shows students how to "see" structures as integral to architecture, and how knowledge of structures is the basis for understanding both the mechanical and conceptual aspects inherent to the art of building. Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, and is illustrated by many photographs of architectural projects and structural behaviour diagrams. This new edition is revised and updated throughout, includes worked-out examples, and is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration.

Book excerpt: In every era, Paris had epitomized beauty and innovation in architecture--magnificent Gothic cathedrals, elegant hotels and chateaux of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the broad sweep of Haussmann in the 1870s, and most recently the Grand Projets of Francois Mitterand. Paris 2000+ focuses on the exceptional projects built in the French capital since 2000. Works by French masters like Jean Nouvel and Christian de Portzamparc and international building firms such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Herzog and de Meuron, and UN Studio are featured alongside projects by emerging French practices to create a lively presentation of the best contemporary projects. Author Sam Lubell has selected thirty buildings to convey the energy and creativity of architects working in Paris and its environs. Among them are the controversial Musee du Quai Branly, the glamorous Louis Vuitton flagship store on the Champs-Elysees, the restoration of the historic Publicis Drugstore, also on the Champs-Elysees, a graceful pedestrian bridge across the Seine, a new Metro strop, and an experimental house in the Parc de la Villette.

Download or read book Surface Architecture written by David Leatherbarrow and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the building surface, architecture's primary instrument of identity and engagement with its surroundings. Visually, many contemporary buildings either reflect their systems of production or recollect earlier styles and motifs. This division between production and representation is in some ways an extension of that between modernity and tradition. In this book, David Leatherbarrow and Mohsen Mostafavi explore ways that design can take advantage of production methods such that architecture is neither independent of nor dominated by technology. Leatherbarrow and Mostafavi begin with the theoretical and practical isolation of the building surface as the subject of architectural design. The autonomy of the surface, the "free facade," presumes a distinction between the structural and nonstructural elements of the building, between the frame and the cladding. Once the skin of the building became independent of its structure, it could just as well hang like a curtain, or like clothing. The focus of the relationship between structure and skin is the architectural surface. In tracing the handling of this surface, the authors examine both contemporary buildings and those of the recent past. Architects discussed include Albert Kahn, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Alison and Peter Smithson, Alejandro de la Sota, Robert Venturi, Jacques Herzog, and Pierre de Meuron. The properties of a building's surface—whether it is made of concrete, metal, glass, or other materials—are not merely superficial; they construct the spatial effects by which architecture communicates. Through its surfaces a building declares both its autonomy and its participation in its surroundings.

Book excerpt: Considered by many as the country’s most dynamic, fastest growing and sexiest city, Miami is more popular than ever before. Yet, it is a city that doesn’t merely change but evolves, never rewriting the past, just adding to its illustrious heritage. And this is the real beauty of Miami. The chic Surf Club and the vibrant Faena Hotel did not replace the emblematic Raleigh of the 1940s nor the Ritz Carlton of the 50s, rather they complement them. Classics like Joe’s Stone Crab continue to serve their signature fare to sell-out crowds each night, as new establishments attract with name chefs. The iconic art deco architecture remains on full display as the modern Herzog & de Meuron-designed Perez Art Museum stands in stark contrast. Replete with arts and culture year round from the international art at The Bass to the street art of Wynwood Walls, each December, the city is taken over by the global cultural elite for Art Basel Miami Beach, a fair that attracts over 80,000 visitors who turn out for the momentous art, such as Maurizio Cattelan’s show stopping “Comedian”, and the exuberant festivities hosted each evening.
