To do this, contributors examine the context in which certain biographical films were made, including the state of knowledge about their subjects at that moment, and what these films reveal about the values and purposes of those who created them. This is an original approach to biographical (as opposed to historical) films and one that has so far played little part in the growing literature on historical films. The films discussed here date from the 1920s to the 2010s, and deal with males and females in periods ranging from the Middle Ages to the end of the twentieth century. In the process, the book discusses how biographical films reflect changing attitudes towards issues such as race, gender and sexuality, and examines the influence of these films on popular perceptions of the past. The introduction analyses the nature of biographical films as a genre: it compares and contrasts the nature of biography on film with written biographies, and considers their relationship with the discipline of history. One day, two men approach him and ask if he will accompany them and play his fiddle as they travel to Washington DC to the circus they work for. Solomon agrees. Unfortunately, he is drugged and wakes up in what he discovers is a slave pen within view of the Capitol.Burch, a cruel slave trader, beats Solomon and tells him never to mention that he is from the North and that he was kidnapped. Solomon is cowed into submission but is inconsolable about his new situation. He and several other slaves are taken down South to Louisiana to be sold. Solomon witnessed firsthand the horror of a slave mother being separated from her children.He is sold to William Ford, a kindly minister with a small plantation in the Great Pine Woods. Ford treats Solomon and his other slaves well. Solomon is not beaten, has a decent degree of freedom, and distinguishes himself as a hard worker. However, a local carpenter who works for Ford, Tibeats, takes an immediate dislike to Solomon. He is an irascible, coarse, and cruel man, and it is to Solomon's great despair that Ford's pecuniary troubles lead him to sell Solomon (but with a mortgage) to Tibeats.Tibeats is a terrible master. One day, he is frustrated with something that he thinks Solomon is doing wrong, and so he comes at him to whip him. Solomon feels wronged by this, grabs the whip, and beats Tibeats mercilessly. Tibeats runs off and Solomon realizes the extent of the wrong he has committed. Chapin, one of Ford's overseers and someone who is well aware of how awful Tibeats is, steps in to prevent Tibeats from killing Solomon by reminding Tibeats of Ford's mortgage.

Book excerpt: The true story of David Henry White, a free Black teenage sailor enslaved on the high seas during the Civil War, whose life story was falsely and intentionally appropriated to advance the Lost Cause trope of a contented slave, happy and safe in servility. David Henry White, a free Black teenage sailor from Lewes, Delaware, was kidnapped by Captain Raphael Semmes of the Confederate raider Alabama on October 9, 1862, from the Philadelphia-based packet ship Tonawanda. White remained captive on the Alabama for over 600 days, until he drowned during the Battle of Cherbourg on June 19, 1864. In a best-selling postwar memoir, Semmes falsely described White as a contented slave who remained loyal to the Confederacy. In Kidnapped at Sea, archaeologist Andrew Sillen uses a forensic approach to describe White's enslavement and demise and illustrates how White's actual life belies the Lost Cause narrative his captors sought to construct. Kidnapped at Sea is the first book to focus on White's actual life, rather than relying on Semmes and other secondary sources. Until now, Semmes's appropriation of White's life has escaped scrutiny, thereby demonstrating the challenges faced by disempowered, illiterate people—and how well-crafted, racist fabrications have become part of Civil War memory.

It was here that the first military engagement of the Revolutionary War was fought and here that Thoreau came to "live deliberately" on the shores of Walden Pond. Between the Revolution and the settlement of the little cabin with the bean rows, however, Walden Woods was home to several generations of freed slaves and their children. Living on the fringes of society, they attempted to pursue lives of freedom, promised by the rhetoric of the Revolution, and yet withheld by the practice of racism. Thoreau was all but alone in his attempt "to conjure up the former occupants of these woods." Other than the chapter he devoted to them in Walden, the history of slavery in Concord has been all but forgotten. In Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord, Massachusetts, Elise Lemire brings to life the former slaves of Walden Woods and the men and women who held them in bondage during the eighteenth century. After charting the rise of Concord slaveholder John Cuming, Black Walden follows the struggles of Cuming's slave, Brister, as he attempts to build a life for himself after thirty-five years of enslavement. Brister Freeman, as he came to call himself, and other of the town's slaves were able to leverage the political tensions that fueled the American Revolution and force their owners into relinquishing them. Once emancipated, however, the former slaves were permitted to squat on only the most remote and infertile places. Walden Woods was one of them. Here, Freeman and his neighbors farmed, spun linen, made baskets, told fortunes, and otherwise tried to survive in spite of poverty and harassment. With a new preface that reflects on community developments since the hardcover's publication, Black Walden reminds us that this was a black space before it was an internationally known green space and preserves the legacy of the people who strove against all odds to overcome slavery and segregation.
