Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Sermons to the Aged In old age the sight usually fails more or less, and, in many mournful cases, is totally lost. Solomon thus describes this af iction, Those who look out of the windows are darkened. The eyes have been justly called the windows of the soul. From these windows, the mind surveys with pleasure the faces of dear relations and friends, and the delightful pros peets of nature; discovers the approaches of danger, and reads the page of instruction. But all these sources of pleasure and safety are closed; the day is gone; the night, the long dark night, which will know no morning in this life, is come; and half the world, as to our enjoyment of it, is shut out for the rest of our days. The doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low. There seems to be an allusion here to the custom of the ancients, who, early in the morning, as soon as the doors of the house were opened, ground their corn for the day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.

(matthew 5: The fifth chapter of Matthew opens with these words: And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain; and when he was set, His disciples came unto Him; and He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying. Then follow the blessings, or Beatitudes, being the first words which the Lord uttered in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount; and the first of this Sermon, as well as the first of the Beatitudes, is, Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the king dom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is composed of those who are poor in spirit, and they are blessed in the possession of it; of them is the kingdom of heaven. But let us review briefly the opening words of the chapter before proceeding to a consideration of the text. And thirdly, the Promise He will shew them His covenant. Let us look at the first point, - that is, the Character: Them that fear Him. On a former occasion, I dwelt a little upon the character of those that fear the Lord. Some of you may remember the sermon. It was that Which bears the title: The Banner Displayed. I shall therefore, not dwell very largely upon character this evening, but simply touch upon a few things to give you some idea of the persons described In the text: Them that fear Him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Sermons: Delivered at Antioch College The Twelve Sermons constituting this volume, were written and delivered while Mr. Mann was President of Antioch College. The Faculty of the College retained the privilege of preaching in their own hands, and either officiated alternately, or agreed upon inviting other clergymen, or perchance laymen, from abroad, to take their places. The Editor has added to the Sermons the Meditations that were found in the manuscripts, and which, though not read, undoubtedly formed the basis of the prayers accompanying the Sermons. The careful revising hand of the Author would doubtless have given these Sermons to the world, if lie had ever published them, in a more perfect form, and with the addition of much that was spoken extemporaneously when delivered; but they will be valuable as they are, it is hoped, to those who loved to listen to his teachings. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Sermons Preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and Before the University of Oxford Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. - 1 Timothy iii, 16. At length, my brethren, the Advent season has reached its close, and we are at Christmas eve. The period of expectation is over, and we are almost entering upon the early hours of that great and blessed festival on which the Christian Church keeps the birthday of her Founder; the day upon which He whom Christendom names the Saviour of the world was born of a human mother and entered this world to take His place among the things and scenes of Time. The Apostle's words to Timothy put before us forcibly and concisely the great master-truth which gives Christmas its meaning Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. It is not the birthday Of a mere Sage and Philanthropist, which we celebrate to-morrow. That might be in itself reasonable and natural enough; but Christmas means much more than that. Christmas means the entrance into the human world of One who was at once its Architect and its Judge, under conditions which made Him the peer Of the poorest and youngest amongst us. It is the introduction of a new principle of life - into humanity which we thus commemorate. It is in fact nothing less than a new starting point in the world's history. It is the opening of a new fountain of salvation for man, unknown to him before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
