Book A Return to the Common Reader

Download or read book A Return to the Common Reader written by Adelene Buckland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1957, Richard Altick's groundbreaking work The English Common Reader transformed the study of book history. Putting readers at the centre of literary culture, Altick anticipated-and helped produce-fifty years of scholarly inquiry into the ways and means by which the Victorians read. Now, A Return to the Common Reader asks what Altick's concept of the 'common reader' actually means in the wake of a half-century of research. Digging deep into unusual and eclectic archives and hitherto-overlooked sources, its authors give new understanding to the masses of newly literate readers who picked up books in the Victorian period. They find readers in prisons, in the barracks, and around the world, and they remind us of the power of those forgotten readers to find forbidden texts, shape new markets, and drive the production of new reading material across a century. Inspired and informed by Altick's seminal work, A Return to the Common Reader is a cutting-edge collection which dramatically reconfigures our understanding of the ordinary Victorian readers whose efforts and choices changed our literary culture forever.

Book Twelve Months in an English Prison Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twelve Months in an English Prison Classic Reprint written by Susan Willis Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Months in an English Prison The reader of this book, whether a believer in Spiritualism, or one who rejects its claims as delusive and impossible, will be struck by the clear and frank confidence shown in the narrative, especially of the circumstances that preceded the criminal trial, and will soon find his feelings drawn into sympathy with the tender, faithful, and courageous spirit of the writer. The heart of the book is the heart of a noble woman. After a consideration of the whole case, there cannot remain a doubt of her innocence of the crime for which she suffered; and it must be a continual reproach to the jurisprudence of the foremost among nations that such an injustice could be done under the forms of law. Download or read book Disorder Contained written by Catherine Cox and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disorder Contained is the first historical account of the complex relationship between prison discipline and mental breakdown in England and Ireland. Between 1840 and 1900 the expansion of the modern prison system coincided with increased rates of mental disorder among prisoners, exacerbated by the introduction of regimes of isolation, deprivation and hard labour. Drawing on a range of archival and printed sources, the authors explore the links between different prison regimes and mental distress, examining the challenges faced by prison medical officers dealing with mental disorder within a system that stressed discipline and punishment and prisoners' own experiences of mental illness. The book investigates medical officers' approaches to the identification, definition, management and categorisation of mental disorder in prisons, and varied, often gendered, responses to mental breakdown among inmates. The authors also reflect on the persistence of systems of punishment that often aggravate rather than alleviate mental illness in the criminal justice system up to the current day. This title is also available as Open Access.

Book Prisoner of Love

Download or read book Prisoner of Love written by Jean Genet and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1970, Jean Genet—petty thief, prostitute, modernist master—spent two years in the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. Always an outcast himself, Genet was drawn to this displaced people, an attraction that was to prove as complicated for him as it was enduring. Prisoner of Love, written some ten years later, when many of the men Genet had known had been killed, and he himself was dying, is a beautifully observed description of that time and those men as well as a reaffirmation of the author's commitment not only to the Palestinian revolution but to rebellion itself. For Genet's most overtly political book is also his most personal—the last step in the unrepentantly sacrilegious pilgrimage first recorded in The Thief's Journal, and a searching meditation, packed with visions, ruses, and contradictions, on such life-and-death issues as the politics of the image and the seductive and treacherous character of identity. Genet's final masterpiece is a lyrical and philosophical voyage to the bloody intersection of oppression, terror, and desire at the heart of the contemporary world.

Book The Floating Prison

Download or read book The Floating Prison written by Louis Garneray and published by Conway Maritime Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1806 Lt. Louis Garneray's ship was en route to France when it was captured by the Royal Navy. Confined for nine years with hundreds of others in the cramped quarters of a prison ship off Portsmouth, he tells a compelling story in turns violent, poignant, dark, and humorous. Originally published in 1851 in French as Mes Pontons, the memoir is considered to be the most detailed account of shipboard prison life at that time. Translator Richard Rose presents the first full, unabridged English-language version of the classic and draws on extensive research to examine the veracity of the more fanciful elements of the narrative. As an added feature, the book is illustrated with paintings and etchings done by Garneray, who became a distinguished maritime artist later in life. This rare first-person expose; on a little-known facet of the age of sail is a valuable resource and makes fascinating reading.

Book excerpt: While religious forces are powerful in numerous societies, they have little or no significance for wide swaths of public or private life in other places. This book considers the classical roots of ideas about religion that dominated sociological ways of thinking about it for most of the twentieth century. Each chapter offers sound reasons for continuing to find theoretical inspiration and challenge in the sociological classics while also seeking ways of enhancing and extending their relevance to religion today.
