Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers an easy introduction to fast growing research areas in evolution of species, population genetics, ecological models, and population dynamics. The first two chapters review the concept and methodologies of phylogenetic trees; computational schemes and illustrations are given, including applications such as tracing the origin of SARS and influenza. The third chapter introduces the reader to ecological models, including predator-prey models. This chapter includes and introduction to reaction-diffusion equations, which are used to analyze the ecological models. The next chapter reviews a broad range of ongoing research in population dynamics, including evolution of dispersal models; it also features interesting mathematical theorems and lists open problems. The final chapter deals with gene frequencies under the action of migration and selection. The book is addressed to readers at the level of grad students and researchers. A background in PDEs is provided.

Book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences I

Download or read book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences I written by Alla Borisyuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces some basic theories on computational neuroscience. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to neurons, tailored to the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 is a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, oriented towards neuronal dynamics. The theory is illustrated with a model of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed throughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory or inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network that connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems.

Book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences III

Download or read book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences III written by Avner Friedman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces some basic mathematical models for cell cycle, proliferation, cancer, and cancer therapy. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the modeling of the cell division cycle. Chapter 2 describes how tumor secretes growth factors to form new blood vessels in its vicinity, which provide it with nutrients it needs in order to grow. Chapter 3 explores the process that enables the tumor to invade the neighboring tissue. Chapter 4 models the interaction between a tumor and the immune system. Chapter 5 is concerned with chemotherapy; it uses concepts from control theory to minimize obstacles arising from drug resistance and from cell cycle dynamics. Finally, Chapter 6 reviews mathematical results for various cancer models.

Book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences II

Download or read book Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences II written by James Sneyd and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-06-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of models in the general area of cell physiology and signal transduction, with particular attention being paid to intracellular calcium dynamics, and the role played by calcium in a variety of cell types. Calcium plays a crucial role in cell physiology, and the study of its dynamics lends insight into many different cellular processes. In particular, calcium plays a central role in muscular contraction, olfactory transduction and synaptic communication, three of the topics to be addressed in detail in this book. In addition to the models, much of the underlying physiology is presented, so that readers may learn both the mathematics and the physiology, and see how the models are applied to specific biological questions. It is intended primarily as a graduate text or a research reference. It will serve as a concise and up-to-date introduction to all those who wish to learn about the state of calcium dynamics modeling, and how such models are applied to physiological questions.

Book Weight Filtrations on Log Crystalline Cohomologies of Families of Open Smooth Varieties

Download or read book Weight Filtrations on Log Crystalline Cohomologies of Families of Open Smooth Varieties written by Yukiyoshi Nakkajima and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the authors construct a theory of weights on the log crystalline cohomologies of families of open smooth varieties in characteristic p>0, by defining and constructing four filtered complexes. Fundamental properties of these filtered complexes are proved, in particular the p-adic purity, the functionality of three filtered complexes, the weight-filtered base change formula, the weight-filtered Künneth formula, the weight-filtered Poincaré duality, and the E2-degeneration of p-adic weight spectral sequences. In addition, the authors state some theorems on the weight filtration and the slope filtration on the rigid cohomology of a separated scheme of finite type over a perfect field of characteristic p>0.

Book A Nonlinear Transfer Technique for Renorming

Download or read book A Nonlinear Transfer Technique for Renorming written by Aníbal Moltó and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract topological tools from generalized metric spaces are applied in this volume to the construction of locally uniformly rotund norms on Banach spaces. The book offers new techniques for renorming problems, all of them based on a network analysis for the topologies involved inside the problem. Maps from a normed space X to a metric space Y, which provide locally uniformly rotund renormings on X, are studied and a new frame for the theory is obtained, with interplay between functional analysis, optimization and topology using subdifferentials of Lipschitz functions and covering methods of metrization theory. Any one-to-one operator T from a reflexive space X into c0 (T) satisfies the authors' conditions, transferring the norm to X. Nevertheless the authors' maps can be far from linear, for instance the duality map from X to X* gives a non-linear example when the norm in X is Fréchet differentiable. This volume will be interesting for the broad spectrum of specialists working in Banach space theory, and for researchers in infinite dimensional functional analysis.
