Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and fourth books of Cicero's Tusculan Disputations deal with the nature and management of human emotion: first grief, then the emotions in general. In lively and accessible style, Cicero presents the insights of Greek philosophers on the subject, reporting the views of Epicureans and Peripatetics and giving a detailed account of the Stoic position, which he himself favors for its close reasoning and moral earnestness. Both the specialist and the general reader will be fascinated by the Stoics' analysis of the causes of grief, their classification of emotions by genus and species, their lists of oddly named character flaws, and by the philosophical debate that develops over the utility of anger in politics and war. Margaret Graver's elegant and idiomatic translation makes Cicero's work accessible not just to classicists but to anyone interested in ancient philosophy and psychotherapy or in the philosophy of emotion. The accompanying commentary explains the philosophical concepts discussed in the text and supplies many helpful parallels from Greek sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Tusculan Disputation is the finest of the five books, its nearest rival being the First (already edited in this series). The middle three books, represented in this edition by the Second, are, as the author clearly intended, less elevated, though still showing Cicero's flair for elegant and lively exposition, and providing much valuable information about the teaching of the main Hellenistic philosophical schools, especially the Stoics. They argue that the perfect human life, or complete human well-being, that of the 'wise man', is unaffected by physical and mental distress or extremes of emotion. Against this background the Fifth puts the positive, mainly Stoic, case that virtue, moral goodness, is alone and of itself sufficient for complete well-being, providing an impressive climax to the whole work. Text with translation and comentary. (Aris and Phillips 1989)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tusculan Disputations by Marcus Tullius Cicero and translated by Charles Duke Yonge. The Tusculanae Disputationes (also Tusculanae Quaestiones; English: Tusculanes or Tusculan Disputations) is a series of five books written by Cicero, around 45 BC, attempting to popularise Greek philosophy in Ancient Rome, including Stoicism. It is so called as it was reportedly written at his villa in Tusculum. In the year 45 BC, when Cicero was around 61 years of age, his daughter, Tullia, died following childbirth. Her loss afflicted Cicero to such a degree that he abandoned all public business and left the city retiring to Asterra, which was a country house that he had near Antium. There he devoted himself to philosophical studies, writing several works, including De Finibus. In the year a.u.c. 708, and the 62d year of Cicero's age, his daughter, Tullia, died in childbed; and her loss afflicted Cicero to such a degree that he abandoned all public business, and, leaving the city, retired to Asterra, which was a country house that he had near Antium; where, after a while, he devoted himself to philosophical studies, and, besides other works, he published his Treatise de Finibus, and also this Treatise called the Tusculan Disputations, of which Middleton gives this concise description: - "The first book teaches us how to contemn the terrors of death, and to look upon it as a blessing rather than an evil; "The second, to support pain and affliction with a manly fortitude; "The third, to appease all our complaints and uneasinesses under the accidents of life; "The fourth, to moderate all our other passions; "And the fifth explains the sufficiency of virtue to make men happy."

Download or read book Tusculan Disputations I II V written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tusculan Disputations, I, II, V: With Introduction and Notes The fact that the Tusculan Disputations are read less than was formerly the case is perhaps due in part to the lack of an edition in English suitable for general classroom use. If so, it is hoped that the present volume may meet this need. With proper' helps, Books I and II are not too diffi cult for even the early years of the college course, and in content they are admirably adapted for the work of that period. Certainly no one of Cicero's longer philosophical treatises now extant can rival the Tusculan Disputatz'ons in human interest; and the fact that in this work Cicero joins himself to the immortal band who caught something of Socrates' faith, thus leading a revolt against the tide of gross materialism which was sweeping over Italy, is a. Circumstance that entitles him to a general and sympathetic hearing. With this thought in mind the notes on Books I and II have been adapted somewhat more carefully to the needs of students in the first two years of the college course. Various considerations led to the exclusion of Books III and IV from this edition, among others the compass of the volume itself. The omission of these books scarcely mars the unity of the treatise as a. Whole, for their substance is summed up at the beginning of Book V. This last-named book, from the point of view of abstract philosophy, is by far the most important division of the work, and in it advanced students will find a somewhat easy gate to the more difficult dc Finibus. Book excerpt: For the great Roman orator and statesman Cicero, 'the good life' was at once a life of contentment and one of moral virtue - and the two were inescapably intertwined. This volume brings together a wide range of his reflections upon the importance of moral integrity in the search for happiness. In essays that are articulate, meditative and inspirational, Cicero presents his views upon the significance of friendship and duty to state and family, and outlines a clear system of practical ethics that is at once simple and universal. These works offer a timeless reflection upon the human condition, and a fascinating insight into the mind of one of the greatest thinkers of Ancient Rome.
