Map turtles and sawbacks, found in and along rivers from Texas to Florida and north to the Great Lakes, fascinate ecologists and evolutionary biologists. Over a short geologic time span, these turtles achieved exceptional biological diversification. Their diets are also exceptionally diverse, and a significant difference in size distinguishes males from females. Adult males are typically half or less the shell length of adult females, making map turtles and sawbacks the champions of sexual dimorphism among not only turtles but all four-legged vertebrates. Aesthetics also draw biologists and hobbyists to map turtles and sawbacks. Book excerpt: In 1926, the Chippewa and Flambeau Improvement Company closed the gates on a newly finished dam at the confluence of the Turtle and Flambeau rivers in Iron County Wisconsin. That act created a storage reservoir of over 13,000-acres, known today as the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, whose waters were to be released for the purpose of generating hydropower for downstream industries. What served the state's industries, however, angered conservationists, for the headwaters of an iconic northwoods river, the Flambeau, had been replaced by a body of water dotted with standing dead trees and awash in driftwood and slash. But Clio, the muse of history, had a trick up her sleeve. The reservoir quickly became home to an abundant fish population; resorts sprang up to meet the needs of anglers and their families; and the flowage gained a reputation for its unique blend of excellent fishing with a wilderness setting. Statewide recognition followed in 1990, when Governor Tommy G. Thompson hailed the flowage as "One of Wisconsin's Crown Jewels" and announced that the state would be purchasing the bulk of the flowage's shoreline from the Chippewa and Flambeau Improvement Company. A few years later the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area became a reality. This book tells the story of the creation of the flowage, traces the evolution of its waters, recounts the emerging human presence in the area, and examines the interplay of the various parties that have an interest in the flowage and its future. It also takes a close look at flowage fishing, life at flowage resorts, and some of the colorful people whose lives have become part of the history and legend of the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage.

Book excerpt: Turtles (order Testudines) are an ancient but highly threatened vertebrate group. Successful preservation of biodiversity in this group (as in others) requires identification of current threats, species-level traits that modulate vulnerability to these threats, and both general and species-specific strategies for mitigating threats. In this dissertation, I address these research needs for several Wisconsin turtles, focusing on the UCN-Endangered Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii). The approaches used here encompass multiple spatial scales, combine genetic and demographic methods of characterizing population viability and spatial ecology, and utilize comparisons among species, specifically by comparing endangered Blanding's turtles with more common co-occurring painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina). Each chapter of this dissertation is written and formatted as a manuscript for publication in a scholarly journal. Chapter 1 (published in Diversity and Distributions) investigates the population-level demographic and genetic responses of three turtle species with differing habitat preferences and life histories to roads and climate. Chapter 2 (prepared for submission to Molecular Ecology) describes the effects of past and present landscape features on population genetic structure in this same suite of turtle species. Chapter 3 (submitted to Methods in Ecology and Evolution) develops a novel method for estimating dispersal rates from genetic kinship data and uses this method to investigate the spatial ecology of nesting female Blanding's turtles. Finally, Chapter 4 (submitted to Biological Conservation) deals with the demographic response of a population of Blanding's turtles to habitat restoration. Overall, the work collected here demonstrates how differences in species' life history traits and habitat preferences can affect their vulnerability to environmental change and suggests how strategies for managing populations and genetic diversity can be tailored to these traits.

Book excerpt: In 1988, a side-scan sonar reading of Rock Lake, Wisconsin's underwater structures was recorded by drivers, under the direction of University of Wisconsin Professor of Civil Engineering Dr. James Scherz. After viewing the image, the author worked with Sac and Fox Nation elders in Wisconsin and Stroud, Oklahoma, to obtain the translations of the Medewigan, or Medicine Lodge. Similar legends are described in Ashinaubig, Menominee, Ojibway, and Winnebago (Ho Chunk) traditions and in an 1890 Ojibway text. However, the oldest written record of the Sauk Tribe is found in an 1100 B.C. Chinese Imperial record that describes the Emperor's notation of similarity in the warriors' archery skills and red-plumed Mohawks, which recalled their own Red Phoenix creation legends.
