Everyday opportunities and activities that foster growth and build positive resources are not 'icing on the cake,' but the active ingredients of everyday resilience.” —Samantha Boardman, Everyday Vitality In Everyday Vitality, psychiatrist Dr. Samantha Boardman shows readers how to find strength within their stress and how to transform full days into more fulfilling days. Drawing from scientific research and her own clinical experience, she shares strategies for cultivating vitality—the positive feeling of aliveness and energy that lies at the core of well-being and at the heart of a good day. You will discover how increased vitality boosts productivity, builds coping skills, and enhances your ability to manage negative emotions. Dr. Boardman demonstrates how to override counterproductive responses to the onslaught of daily hassles and to respond with flexibility and fortitude instead of fear and rumination. Rather than disengaging from the world while you "find yourself," she shows you how to boost your vitality by living well within the world. As Dr. Boardman explains, the three main wellsprings of vitality are: meaningfully connecting with others; engaging in experiences that challenge you; and contributing to something beyond yourself. These activities foster resilience by boosting emotional stamina and generating uplifts—the counterparts to daily irritations and annoyances. Whether it is having a good conversation, doing a favor for someone, going for a walk, or reading an interesting article and then calling a friend to talk about it, commonplace experiences and micromoments serve as the building blocks of everyday resilience. Everyday Vitality explains how to identify them in your life, develop them, and use them as a foundation on which to thrive. Whether you are twenty or eighty, Everyday Vitality will give you the tools you need to get the most out of each day and to live your life to the fullest.

Book excerpt: "The Light After the Tunnel: Discovering Your True Purpose In Hard Times," is a profound and illuminating exploration of the human experience in the face of pain, tribulation, and difficult circumstances. In this thought-provoking book, the author delves into the depths of these challenging moments, offering invaluable insights and perspectives that lead readers toward a profound understanding of God's unwavering love and the transformative power of trials. Through the metaphor of a tunnel—a symbol of the arduous journey through perceived barriers and obstacles—the author guides readers on a transformative path of self-discovery, resilience, and spiritual growth. This metaphor encompasses the myriad difficulties that God's children encounter in a fallen world governed by the grasp of darkness. The tunnel represents the test of faith, an essential stage in every believer's journey towards fulfilling their divine purpose and manifesting God's promises in their lives. "The Light After the Tunnel" emphasizes the importance of preparation, endurance, and spiritual maturity in fulfilling one's purpose and avoiding disappointment. Drawing parallels to the rigorous testing process undergone by manufacturers to ensure the durability and authenticity of their products, the author illustrates how God allows trials, hardships, and pain to shape and refine individuals, preparing them for the responsibilities and blessings tied to His promises. While traversing the tunnel is an uncomfortable and challenging experience, the author highlights its significance as a pivotal time for believers to prove their spiritual citizenship in the kingdom of God. By showcasing the experiences of biblical champions and heroes of faith, as well as great ministers of the gospel, the book establishes the tunnel as a rite of passage for those seeking to do extraordinary work in their calling, whether in their careers, businesses, or ministries. The message of "The Light After the Tunnel" resounds with the assurance that challenging situations are not an indication of failure or abandonment by God, but rather a testament to one's capability to overcome them. Readers are encouraged to trust in God's unwavering faithfulness and His perfect understanding of the precise manner in which His promises will be fulfilled. Through scriptural wisdom and profound insights, the book reminds us that God's ways transcend human comprehension, and His thoughts surpass our own. In this inspiring and spiritually enriching book, readers will find solace, guidance, and encouragement to navigate life's storms with unwavering faith and hope. By embracing the tunnel experiences, readers will discover the transformative power within themselves, enabling them to emerge on the other side with newfound strength, character, and a deeper connection to God. "The Light After the Tunnel" is a beacon of light and wisdom, illuminating the path toward a brighter future filled with divine blessings and a deeper understanding of God's unconditional love. It is a must-read for those seeking resilience, spiritual growth, and the realization of their purpose amidst the challenges of life.

Download or read book How Children Succeed written by Paul Tough and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2012 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some children succeed while others fail? The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control. How Children Succeed introduces us to a new generation of researchers and educators who, for the first time, are using the tools of science to peel back the mysteries of character. Through their stories—and the stories of the children they are trying to help—Tough traces the links between childhood stress and life success. He uncovers the surprising ways in which parents do—and do not—prepare their children for adulthood. And he provides us with new insights into how to improve the lives of children growing up in poverty. Early adversity, scientists have come to understand, not only affects the conditions of children’s lives, it can also alter the physical development of their brains. But innovative thinkers around the country are now using this knowledge to help children overcome the constraints of poverty. With the right support, as Tough’s extraordinary reporting makes clear, children who grow up in the most painful circumstances can go on to achieve amazing things. This provocative and profoundly hopeful book has the potential to change how we raise our children, how we run our schools, and how we construct our social safety net. It will not only inspire and engage readers, it will also change our understanding of childhood itself.

He could not have predicted that one day, in the middle of his summer of sexual emancipation, Rachel would just drop their two children off at his place and simply not return. He had been working so hard to find equilibrium in his single life. The winds of his optimism, long dormant, had finally begun to pick up. Now this. As Toby tries to figure out where Rachel went, all while juggling his patients at the hospital, his never-ending parental duties, and his new app-assisted sexual popularity, his tidy narrative of the spurned husband with the too-ambitious wife is his sole consolation. But if Toby ever wants to truly understand what happened to Rachel and what happened to his marriage, he is going to have to consider that he might not have seen things all that clearly in the first place. A searing, utterly unvarnished debut, Fleishman Is in Trouble is an insightful, unsettling, often hilarious exploration of a culture trying to navigate the fault lines of an institution that has proven to be worthy of our great wariness and our great hope. This book was released on 2017-02-26 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction It Is All His Fault! But I Married Too Young… Self-Justification Criticism and Contempt Escalation of the Situation The Silent Treatment Do NOT Bring Me Flowers Anymore The Importance of Physical Intimacy in a Successful Marriage Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction All these years happily married and still going strong… Once while I was training under a psychologist, she told me that in her particular country, nobody had ever heard of marriage counseling, because the option of divorce, a couple splitting up was unheard of, in their culture, traditions, and upbringing. For them, marriage was a once-in-a-lifetime proposition, to be ended only after “till death do us part.” And even then, many partners did not marry again, because they still considered themselves married to their spouses, even after becoming a widow or widower. I also have been brought up in such a supposedly old-fashioned milieu, and society, naturally thanks to our upbringing, culture, and one may almost say old-fashioned traditions, for every one of us, marriage is once and forever, and never ever to be broken up under any circumstances. So it was with great surprise, that I began to see the trend of divorces gaining popularity, because that had become a modern fashionable option, and if so many people in the West were doing it, this was of course the best way of getting out of a partnership which one had begun considering to be a bit of a drag, and look for more exciting options elsewhere. Sadly enough, you are going to be surprised to know that statistics say that 27% of married American men are going to have an extramarital affair, just because it happened and they could not control it. Isn't it interesting to know that just three generations ago, their own grandparents considered extramarital affairs to be a thing of shame, not a thing of which a virtuous responsible father or husband did, and faithfulness was a part of his principles, upbringing, tradition, and culture. He believed in his marriage vows. And so did his wife. And using him as an example, his children followed in his steps. But then suddenly in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, it began to be fashionable to divorce and marry again, not understanding about the emotional, psychological, spiritual, physical, and mental trauma this would have on all the members of the family, parents, and children.
