Book A Descriptive Study of a C y p r i p e d i u m Habitat on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge

Download or read book A Descriptive Study of a C y p r i p e d i u m Habitat on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge written by Laurie Beauvais-Coles and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A pripedium habitat was studied in the Pine Creek Natural Area on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, in Spokane County of eastern Washington. Data was gathered from June to August of 1992 to assess the population status, vegetative associations, microclimate, and various edaphic factors that make up this pripedium habitat. The two perennial ponds included in the study had somewhat differing vegetative associations, mineral analysis results and edaphic factor data. The microclimate for the two ponds was essentially the same. In contrast, the Spokane International Airport weather station data varied from the pond study areas by having higher minimum air temperatures throughout the study along with more frequent rain events. The dominant Cypripedium species for pond 1 was C. montanum while at pond 2 the dominant was C. calceolus var. parviflorum. From the baseline data it may be hypothesized that percent relative cover and soil moisture are possible limiting factors for pripedium species. The baseline data gathered from June to August of 1992 coincided with the end of a six year drought period in eastern Washington. At the present time there is a weather pattern shift with a regime of increased spring moisture in eastern Washington. Follow-up studies during this increased moisture period may give valuable comparison data, giving further definition to this ecotone between pond and open pine forest where these pripedium populations were found"--Document.

Book The Forest People

Download or read book The Forest People written by Colin Turnbull and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest People is an astonishingly intimate and life-enhancing account of a hunter-gatherer tribe living in harmony with nature -- and an all-time classic of anthropology. For three years, Colin Turnbull lived with an isolated group of Pygmies deep in the forest of the African Congo, experiencing their daily life first-hand. He attended their hunting parties and initiation ceremonies, witnessed their music and their rituals, observed their quarrels and love affairs. He documented them as an anthropologist but was accepted among them as a friend. A ground-breaking work in its time, The Forest People made him one of the most famous intellectuals of the 1960s and 1970s. It remains a transporting account of an earthly paradise and of a legendary and fascinating people. With a new foreword by Horatio Clare.
