Book excerpt: When Callie Hill's boss, Avis Greeter, queen of steamy romance novels immediately summons her from her first real vacation in five years, Callie would like to throttle her herself. Upon arrival in Avis's home town of Lake Phillip, Iowa, where she went on retreat, Callie soon discovers Avis wasn't working on another best seller, instead she intended all along to write a tell-all memoir book revealing her vivacious and sensual escapades. Later word leaks about the new project which has locals in uproar as many were included in her back story of how she gradually made it to the best seller list. Before Callie can help settle the PR mess, she's fired, in lust with Deputy Sheriff Max Hayden who arrested her the first night she was there and took refuge from a nasty storm in his family's cabin. The small lake community is surrounded by flood waters following the storm. With no way out other than helicopter, Avis is found floating in the rising waters with Callie among the suspect list.

Book Repairing Your Flooded Home

Download or read book Repairing Your Flooded Home written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When in doubt, throw it out. Don't risk injury or infection. 2: Ask for help. Many people can do a lot of the cleanup and repairs discussed in this book. But if you have technical questions or do not feel comfortable doing something, get professional help. If there is a federal disaster declaration, a telephone "hotline" will often be publicized to provide information about public, private, and voluntary agency programs to help you recover from the flood. Government disaster programs are there to help you, the taxpayer. You're paying for them; check them out. 3: Floodproof. It is very likely that your home will be flooded again someday. Floodproofing means using materials and practices that will prevent or minimize flood damage in the future. Many floodproofing techniques are inexpensive or can be easily incorporated into your rebuilding program. You can save a lot of money by floodproofing as you repair and rebuild (see Step 8).

Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of hazards as part of the earth’s natural systems, in contrast to "disasters," which occur at the intersection of the built and natural environments. It emphasizes choices made by society that either increase or diminish our level of vulnerability to the impacts of hazards, and the role of the emergency manager in how these choices are made and acted upon. The book defines key concepts including mitigation, preparedness, resilience, vulnerability, and explains the role of the emergency manager in putting these principles into practice.

Book Local Theories of Argument

Download or read book Local Theories of Argument written by Dale Hample and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argumentation is often understood as a coherent set of Western theories, birthed in Athens and developing throughout the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment and Renaissance, and into the present century. Ideas have been nuanced, developed, and revised, but still the outline of argumentation theory has been recognizable for centuries, or so it has seemed to Western scholars. The 2019 Alta Conference on Argumentation (co-sponsored by the National Communication Association and the American Forensic Association) aimed to question the generality of these intellectual traditions. This resulting collection of essays deals with the possibility of having local theories of argument – local to a particular time, a particular kind of issue, a particular place, or a particular culture. Many of the papers argue for reconsidering basic ideas about arguing to represent the uniqueness of some moment or location of discourse. Other scholars are more comfortable with the Western traditions, and find them congenial to the analysis of arguments that originate in discernibly distinct circumstances. The papers represent different methodologies, cover the experiences of different nations at different times, examine varying sorts of argumentative events (speeches, court decisions, food choices, and sound), explore particular personal identities and the issues highlighted by them, and have different overall orientations to doing argumentation scholarship. Considered together, the essays do not generate one simple conclusion, but they stimulate reflection about the particularity or generality of the experience of arguing, and therefore the scope of our theories.

Book Drowning by Accident

Download or read book Drowning by Accident written by Elizabeth Meinhard and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drowning By Accident explains why it is so easy to drown, where accidents happen, and how to save lives by early rescue and resuscitation. More than 600 people die by drowning in Britain every year. Swimming is promoted as a particularly safe form of exercise, so that swimmers forget or ignore the dangers of frigid lakes, swollen rivers, incoming tides or outgoing rip currents. Drowning accidents take place because we don't recognise water as a hostile environment. We overestimate the strength and endurance of our bodies and underestimate the power and deceptiveness of water. Year after year, victims lose their lives in typical drowning accidents, often sinking so quickly and silently that nearby family, friends and onlookers fail to notice the tragedy taking place close beside them. Babies drown in baths. Toddlers drown in garden ponds. School children fall off rafts. Teenagers strike too far from the shore. Pensioners wade into rivers to save their dogs. Victims often die within minutes of sinking beneath the surface. A quarter of those who reach hospital alive will also die, while others survive with severe permanent brain damage. This means that it is vitally important for parents, grandparents, teachers, lifeguards and lawmakers to recognise the risks and prevent drowning accidents before they take place.

Book Johnny s Family Goes Camping

Download or read book Johnny s Family Goes Camping written by Johnny Mullens Cfm and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johnny's family looked forward to their annual camping trip to Bull Creek Campground. The week-long camping trip has been planned for months because of when Johnny's dad could take his vacation from work. The campground has pretty natural scenery but also has a history of flooding. The family camping trip could also be the same time as a flood. Johnny, his sister Sandy and his parents prepare in case of a flood. When the flood happens, because of their planning they are able to make it safely out of the campground and help others. When someone needs to be rescued in a flood or other natural disaster, their rescuer is in danger trying to rescue them. This story provides some safety ideas so that a family may be able to help themselves and others before the flood happens. The best way to avoid being a flood victim is to have a plan before the flood.
