Book Contentious Issues of Security and the Future of Turkey

Download or read book Contentious Issues of Security and the Future of Turkey written by Nursin Atesoglu Guney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security is a major contemporary concern, with foreign and security policies topping the agenda of many governments. At the centre of Western security concerns is Turkey, due to its geographical proximity to converging major fault lines such as the Caucasus, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. As trans-Atlantic debates evolve around these major fault lines, future relations will have a direct impact on the re-orientation of Turkish foreign and security policies. This comprehensive study focuses on the future of Turkish foreign and security policies within the emerging strategies of the two Wests. Discussing the challenges Turkey has been facing since the turn of the century, it examines Turkish foreign policy in the context of trans-Atlantic relations - as a global actor, and with respect to conflict, new power relations, energy security, Greece, Cyprus and the environment.

Book Turkey s Foreign Policy and Security Perspectives in the 21st Century

Download or read book Turkey s Foreign Policy and Security Perspectives in the 21st Century written by Sertif Demir and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books aims at analyzing Turkish foreign and security policies in the 21st century. Turkey’s foreign and security policies have become the focus of academic discussions since Turkey is located in the middle of the most unstable region in the world. Turkey’s self-assured foreign policy has similarly attracted the attention of academicians worldwide. Meanwhile, Turkey’s security policy has also been the subject of discussions as the country has been struggling with ethnic terrorism for 35 years. Furthermore, the US invasion of Iraq and the recent Syrian civil war, along with other factors, have caused religious radicalism to expand its power throughout the Middle East, which has heavily impacted on Turkey’s security. Turkey’s longstanding problems with its neighbors have also affected the general characteristics of its foreign policy, particularly leading to its securitization.

Book Turkey as a U S Security Partner

Download or read book Turkey as a U S Security Partner written by F. Stephen Larrabee and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1949, America's security partnership with Turkey has been a strategic asset that both parties value. Now, however, trends in the greater Middle East, in Turkish security policies, and within Turkish society itself appear to be eroding the commonality of interests that constitutes the foundation of that partnership. Left unchecked, these trends could diminish U.S. influence in Turkey and increase instability in the Middle East. This monograph explores the dynamics of the evolving U.S.-Turkish security relationship and their implications for U.S. foreign and security policies.

Book Turkey and European Security Defence Policy

Download or read book Turkey and European Security Defence Policy written by Çigdem Üstün and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security perceptions in Europe have changed drastically in the last decade due to the effects of globalisation. As a result, the EU's relations with Turkey and the security policies of the EU and Turkey have become increasingly important. In light of recent developments - not least the controversial issue of Turkey's EU candidacy - this book attempts to answer two main questions: 'Is there a gap between EU and Turkish security cultures?' and 'To what extent is Turkey an advantage for Europe?'. Cigdem Ustun here examines Turkey's crucial role with NATO and details its relations and priorities in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Black Sea regions, comparing these with EU relations and priorities. This comparison illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of including Turkey in European security policies and will be essential reading for all those involved in security studies and policy.

Book Global Security Watch Turkey

Download or read book Global Security Watch Turkey written by Mustafa Kibaroglu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of factors that elevate Turkey's status in the international arena and make it an important regional actor. As a longstanding member of the western world, a candidate country to the European Union, a staunch ally of the United States, and a frontline state in the fight against terrorism, Turkey plays a key, yet often overlooked, role in world affairs. Proper understanding of how decisions regarding foreign and security issues are being taken within the state apparatus in Turkey is crucially important, especially when unexpected developments take place. Mustafa and Aysegul Kibaroglu examine the issues that drive Turkish foreign policy decisions in this crucial region. This reference work chronicles the factors which have shaped the mindsets of the makers of Turkey's foreign and security policies from the foundation of the Republic in 1923. The authors provide not only meaninful explanations of past events, but also useful insigts into the current issues at the center of Turkish regional and foreign policies. They offer a concise overview of Turkish foreign policy and assess the position of the nation within the context of the war on terror, globalization, and more. Their narrative is supplemented by biographies of key decision makers, policies, and documents that illustrate the choices that comprise Turkey's past and present.

Book Debating Security in Turkey

Download or read book Debating Security in Turkey written by Ebru Canan-Sokullu and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debating Security in Turkey: Challenges and Changes in the Twenty-First Century, edited by Ebru Canan-Sokullu, gives a detailed account of the strategic security agenda facing Turkey in an era of uncertainty and swift transformation in global politics, and regional and local dynamics. The contributors to this volume describe the challenges and changes that Turkey encounters in the international, regional, and national environment at a time of extraordinary flux. This study provides a framework for Turkish security agenda locating it in theoretical discussions, and developing a conceptual framework of security challenges to Turkey, and to a broader region where the country and its interests are located. The book positions Turkey in the new global security order addressing a multidimensional political agenda, and points to the need not only to elaborate on the overall evaluation of Turkey's political affairs--domestic and foreign-- but also to trace a critical conjuncture of transatlantic relations, its recent role in the Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia, and bid for full membership in the EU within the security context. Finally, the contributors reflect upon where Turkey's security challenges and prospects stand from internal and external perspectives with an interactive foreign policy assessment. Debating Security in Turkey is an essential contribution to the literature of Turkish national security, and the effects of that security in the region.

Book Turkish Foreign Policy in Post Cold War Era

Download or read book Turkish Foreign Policy in Post Cold War Era written by İdris Bal and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of Cold War discipline the world has entered a new era. Parameters have changed; new handicaps as well as new opportunities have been created for countries. Turkey as a neighbor of former USSR, a member of NATO and located at the center of a sensitive region covered by Caucasus, Balkans and Middle East, has been affected by the end of Cold War radically. Turkey has lost some of her bargaining cards in the new era and therefore has needed new arguments. This need encouraged Turkey to take active steps in Post Cold War era. This book analyzes Turkey s relations with US, EU, Balkans, Middle East, Caucasus, Central Asia, Russia, China and Japan. At the same time, effects of economic crises and domestic developments on foreign policy, Turkish model in Turkish foreign policy, water conflict and Kurdish problem are analyzed as well. To conclude, it is possible to argue that although Turkey lost some of her bargaining cards in Post Cold War era, new developments pushed Turkey to the center of world politics rather then to periphery. Book Turkey s New Foreign Policy

Download or read book Turkey s New Foreign Policy written by Aaron Stein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP), after coming to power in 2002, sought to play a larger diplomatic role in the Middle East. The AKP adopted a proactive foreign policy to create ‘strategic depth’ by expanding Turkey’s zone of influence in the region, drawing on the opportunities of geography, economic power and imperial history to reconnect the country with its historical hinterland. Yet despite early promise, this policy came undone after the Arab upheavals of 2011 and has seen Turkey increasingly at odds with its neighbours and the West. Turkey's New Foreign Policy outlines the key tenets of the AKP’s policy of strategic depth in the Middle East and how this marks a departure from traditional Turkish foreign policy. Particular attention is focused on the Turkish reaction to the political changes that swept through the Arab world – including the Syrian civil war – and presented Turkey with its most significant foreign-policy challenge to date. Based on extensive primary research of Turkish-language sources, this monograph argues that political changes in the Middle East have precipitated a serious decline in Turkish regional influence, reversing earlier gains in influence after the AKP came to power. However, despite these foreign-policy defeats, the AKP has shown little indication that it is willing to scale back its ambitions, insisting that it stands on the right side of history – drawing a clear distinction between Turkey and the West.

Download or read book NATIONAL SECURITY PARADIGMS OF TURKEY written by Murat Sengöz and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to highlight the Turkey’s national security paradigms as a core tool for advancing regional and international security, peace and prosperity. In this study, facts related to national security are tried to be explained through the components of national security administration. In this study, the aspects of national security administration are tried to be explained by the paradigm of axiological value philosophy within the norms of political philosophy. The dynamics and aspects of national security are tried to be explained by taking into consideration the actions that are expected to be adopted normatively that centralize human values with an axiological point of view instead of currently established judgments and rules. This book is purely an original study based on historical, universal and normative principles that are taken into consideration from a holistic point of view.
