Book excerpt: A computer program is described capable of determining the properties of a compressible turbulent boundary layer with pressure gradient and heat transfer. The program treats the two-dimensional problem assuming perfect gas and Crocco integral energy solution. A compressibility transformation is applied to the equation for the conservation of mass and momentum, which relates this flow to a low speed constant property flow with simultaneous mass transfer and pressure gradient. The resulting system of describing equations consists of eight ordinary differential equations which are solved numerically. For Part 1, see N72-12226; for Part 2, see N72-15264.

Book excerpt: Heat-transfer data from four wind-tunnel experiments and two free-flight experiments with turbulent boundary layers have been examined to see whether or not they are well represented by the Reynolds analogy or a modification thereof. The heat-transfer results are put into the form of dimensionless Stanton numbers based on fluid properties at the outer edge of the boundary layer and are compared with skin-friction coefficients for the same Mach numbers and wall to free-stream temperature ratios as obtained from an interpolation of the existing skin-friction data. The effective Reynolds number is taken to be the length Reynolds number measured from the effective turbulent origin, a position which differs importantly from the leading edge of the test surface in some cases.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the behavior of a turbulent boundary layer subjected to adverse and favorable pressure gradients was conducted at Mach number 4 for a free-stream Reynolds number of 0.500,000 per inch. Two severe pressure gradients were imposed on the boundary layer by interchangeable contoured centerbodies inside a large hollow cylinder for cold-wall and adiabatic-wall temperature conditions. Imposition of either of the adverse pressure gradients significantly decreased the natural growth rate of the boundary-layer displacement thickness, whereas the favorable pressure gradient had opposite effects; momentum thickness was relatively unaffected by pressure gradient. A pressure gradient increase of about 30 percent caused relatively small changes in the skin friction, heat-transfer rate, and the characteristic boundary-layer parameters. Wall cooling effects (T sub w/t sub 0 approximately 0.3) on the boundary-layer thickness parameters were nearly insignificant, in comparison with the adiabatic-wall results. Heat-transfer distributions were similar to the local skin friction results based on free-stream conditions. (Author).
