Book Some Characteristics of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Rapidly Accelerated Flows

Download or read book Some Characteristics of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Rapidly Accelerated Flows written by Paul F. Brinich and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of time-mean-turbulent boundary layer velocity profiles measured in a rapidly accelerating flow suggests that the outer region of the velocity profiles consists of essentially inviscid, rotational flow. The extent of this inviscid outer region was observed in some cases to exceed 90 percent of what is ordinarily thought of as the turbulent boundary layer thickness. On the other hand, the inner frictional region of these velocity profiles appears to have turbulent characteristics similar to those of more conventional turbulent boundary layers. Hence, the outer edge boundary condition for this inner region is more properly the external rotational flow region than the free stream.

Book Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers written by Tuncer Cebeci and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

Book Turbulent Boundary Layer Characteristics Over a Rough Surface in an Adverse Pressure Gradient

Download or read book Turbulent Boundary Layer Characteristics Over a Rough Surface in an Adverse Pressure Gradient written by Victor Everett Scottron and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary layers produced on rough surfaces in adverse pressure gradients were investigated. Experimental data on two pressure gradients are studied and compared with flow over a smooth surface. Experimental data obtained with both pitot tubes and hot wires are carefully analyzed and corrected for the effects of high level turbulence. An improved pitot tube correction is proposed. It is shown that a boundary layer on a rough wall will separate more readily than on a smooth wall. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Structure of the Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Structure of the Turbulent Boundary Layer written by P. W. Runstadler and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of visual and quantitative measurements is presented, providing a physical picture of the turbulent boundary layer flow structure on a flat plate. The flow structure is shown to consist of three zones, each zone has a one to one correspondence to the well known regions of the u+, y+ mean velocity profile. A wall layer region is shown to exist below y+ = 10. An apparently fully turbulent region exists corresponding to the logarithmic ''law of the wall'' and the ''buffer'' region. An intermittent zone appears to agree closely with the ''wake'' deviation region. An entirely new result of the investigation is the delineation of the structure of the wall layer region. This region is shown to contain a relatively regular structure of low and high velocity fluid streaks alternating in the span direction, together with the ejection of low momentum fluid into the outer flow. Correlations are given for the rate of ejection and the streak spacing. A qualitative description of other features of the wall layer region and the character of the remainder of the boundary layer flow structure is presented. (Author).

Book Turbulent Boundary Layers Developing Over Compliant Surfaces

Download or read book Turbulent Boundary Layers Developing Over Compliant Surfaces written by S. G. Lekoudis and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of reducing drag due to skin friction remains of interest. This is the case because of the significant benefits that would result from an application of a drag reducing scheme on airplanes, ships or underwater vehicles. One of the techniques that have been proposed for such a scheme is wall compliance. Wall compliance could, in principle, work in two ways: either it could delay transition, or it could modify the inner part of a turbulent boundary layer so that reduced skin friction would result. The objective of this research program was to develop prediction techniques for high Reynolds number turbulent flows over compliant surfaces. This objective was pursued by evaluating the wall induced Reynolds stresses using solutions of the liner momentum equations.

Book Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layer Computations for Flow with Longitudinal Curvature

Download or read book Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layer Computations for Flow with Longitudinal Curvature written by Walter B. Sturek and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical study has been performed using a finite-difference boundary layer computer program that includes corrections to the equations of motion for longitudinal curvature and allows the static pressure to be specified as a known function of x and y. Calculations with and without the corrections for longitudinal curvature and pressure gradient normal to be the local surface have been compared to experimental measurements of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer flow over a surface with concave longitudinal curvature. Substantially improved agreement with experimental measurements is obtained for the calculations including corrections for wall curvature and pressure gradient normal to the local surface for density profile, skin friction coefficient, and boundary-layer integral properties.

Book Recent Developments in Turbulence Management

Download or read book Recent Developments in Turbulence Management written by K.-S. Choi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Drag Reduction Meeting has been held on 15th and 16th November 1990 in London. This was the fifth of the annual European meetings on drag reduction in engineering flows. The main objective of this meeting was to discuss up-to-date results of drag reduction research carried out in Europe. The organiser has adopted the philosophy of discussing the yesterday's results rather than the last year's results. No written material has therefore been requested for the meeting. It was only after the meeting the submission of papers was requested to the participants, from which 16 papers were selected for this proceedings volume. The meeting has attracted a record number of participants with a total of 52 researchers from seven European countries, U. K. , France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and U. S. S. R. as well as from Japan, Canada and Australia. The subjects covered in this proceedings volume include riblets, LEBUs (Large Eddy Break-Up device), surface roughness, compliant surfaces and polymer additives. Riblets seem to be one of the most extensively studied devices in the past years. Reflecting this situation in the European community, there are six papers on riblets covering their practical applications to aircraft and to a model ship, near-wall coherent structure of the boundary layer and effects of flow three-dimensionality. Possibility of heat-transfer enhancement with riblets and potential use in the laminar flow are also investigated. An analytical model is developed for the boundary-layer with a LEBU device.

Book Structure and Control of the Wall Region in a Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book Structure and Control of the Wall Region in a Turbulent Boundary Layer written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, our group at Cornell has developed a new approach to turbulent flows. This approach uses low dimensional dynamical models to better understand the time dependent behavior of large scale, or energy dominated, features in turbulent and other complex flows. We have applied our approach to the problem of controlling the turbulent boundary layer, with substantial progress. Our objectives as we continue with this effort are: (1) To explore further the control of the boundary layer in turbulent channel flow, refining the control algorithm and bringing more information from the low-dimensional models to bear on the problems of state estimation and control. (2) To make an extensive evaluation of the potential of compliant surfaces for turbulent drag reduction through the use of low-dimensional models and direct simulations of turbulent flow over a compliant surface.
