Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modifications to the swirling jet flow facility and mean flow data taken in the initial mixing region are described. Measurements are made at six streamwise locations downstream of the nozzle exit for three different initial mass flow rate ratios. The data were analyzed in order to calculate static pressure profiles, total and component velocity profiles, and local wall shear stress values. The results show that an axially-directed outer stream inhibits the spreading rate of the swirling inner stream and the decay of the swirl within that stream. The results also show that near-wall similarity exists in flow near the centerbody, so that the two dimensional form of the law-of -the-wall, when applied to the total velocity, can serve as a valid wall function for prediction purposes. Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book excerpt: Swirling jet flows have been studied experimentally and computationally and the results have been compared with theory. Three-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) measurements have been carried out for swirling jets of various strengths and swirl distributions. Radial profiles of velocity have been obtained from the jet exit to 50 diameters downstream. The experimental results are consistent with previous results and with similarity theory for weakly swirling turbulent jets. However, the parametric range and spatial domain of the current data set makes it suitable for validation. Computational simulations have also been performed using a combination of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approaches. The results have been validated with experimental data and used to explore the mechanisms behind the increased mixing enhancement observed. The combined experimental/computational effort is still ongoing, but the experiences to date have demonstrated the effectiveness of such an approach.

Book excerpt: Streamline curvature in the plane of the mean shear produces large changes in the turbulence structure of shear layers, usually an order of magnitude more important than normal pressure gradients and other terms in the mean-motion equations for curved flows. The effects on momentum and heat transfer in boundary layers are noticeable on typical wing sections and are very important on highly-cambered turbomachine blades: turbulence may be nearly eliminated on highly-convex surfaces, while on highly-concave surfaces momentum transfer by quasi-steady longitudinal vortices dominates the ordinary turbulence processes. The greatly enhanced mixing rates of swirling jets and the characteristic non-turbulent cores of trailing vortices are also consequences of the effects of streamline curvature on the turbulence structure. A progress report, comprises a review of current knowledge, a discussion of methods of predicting curvature effects, and a presentation of principles for the guidance of future workers.

Book excerpt: Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) is used to study the mechanism of generation and evolution of turbulence structures in a temporally evolving supersonic swirling round jet and also to examine the resulting acoustic radiations. Fourier spectral expansions are used in the streamwise and azimuthal directions and a 1-D b-spline Galerkin representation is used in the radial direction. Spectral-like accuracy is achieved using this numerical scheme. Direct numerical simulations, using the b-spline spectral method, are carried out starting from mean flow initial conditions which are perturbed by the most unstable linear stability eigenfunctions. It is observed that the initial helical instability waves evolve into helical vortices which eventually breakdown into smaller scales of turbulence. 'Rib' structures similar to those seen in incompressible mixing layer flow of Rogers and Moserl are observed. The jet core breakdown stage exhibits increased acoustic radiations.
