Among other poets represented are Wyatt, Donne, Marston and Jonson and a number of pieces have been included by writers whose work is today not readily accessible, such as Gascoigne, Lodge, Rowlands and Guilpin. The nature and development of verse satire as a literary genre is discussed in the introduction.

But their verse could also give coded expression to desires and resentments produced by competition amongst an elite for the favour of an increasingly tyrannical king. This study focuses primarily on the work of the two most successful courtier poets, Sir Thomas Wyatt (c.1503-1542) and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1517-1547). Although Surrey admired and imitated Wyatt, each represents a significantly different element in the Henrician court. Wyatt was a 'new man', rising in the service of the King, while Surrey was a member of the old peerage, jealous of the erosion of traditional powers and privileges. The book offers readings of the full range of each man's writing, from amorous Italianate songs and sonnets, to classicizing epigrams and satires, and Reformist psalm paraphrases. The poetry is considered in the contexts of their careers, of the writing of contemporaries, and of the political and social conditions within which they lived. Dr Heale's analysis makes it clear that the lightest court song is often freighted with complex significance, while the poems of plain-speaking reflection prove to be wily approximations of the truth. This book is unique in its exploration of how 'hybrid' literary genres emerge at particular historical moments as vehicles for negotiating other kinds of hybridity, including but not limited to cultural and political hybridity. In particular, Schmidt addresses three distinct manifestations of 'hybridity' in English literature and iconography during this period. The first category comprises literal hybrid creatures such as satyrs, centaurs, giants, and changelings; the second is cultural hybrids reflecting the mixed status of the nation; and the third is generic hybrids such as the Shakespearean 'problem play,' the volatile verse satires of Nashe, Hall and Marston, and the tragicomedies of Beaumont and Fletcher. In Renaissance Hybrids, Schmidt demonstrates 'postmodern' considerations not to be unique to our own critical milieu. These scholars, however, were not concerned solely with the rediscovery and editing of the original texts which two centuries of growing antiquarian research had ignored. Almost without exception men of letters themselves, they desired also to recover the 'world of fine fabling' in which the classical temper of the preceding age had preferred the virtues of 'good sense', and they consciously put their discoveries to the service of modern poetry, or urged that they should be so used. The consequences of this were far-reaching, and as he considers in detail the individual achievements of his principal subjects Dr Johnston does not neglect to bring out the nature and importance of the contributions they made to the general culture and literature of their own day and of the nineteenth century.
