Download or read book Trust Me I m Lying written by Ryan Holiday and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cult classic that predicted the rise of fake news—revised and updated for the post-Trump, post-Gawker age. Hailed as "astonishing and disturbing" by the Financial Times and "essential reading" by TechCrunch at its original publication, former American Apparel marketing director Ryan Holiday’s first book sounded a prescient alarm about the dangers of fake news. It's all the more relevant today. Trust Me, I’m Lying was the first book to blow the lid off the speed and force at which rumors travel online—and get "traded up" the media ecosystem until they become real headlines and generate real responses in the real world. The culprit? Marketers and professional media manipulators, encouraged by the toxic economics of the news business. Whenever you see a malicious online rumor costs a company millions, politically motivated fake news driving elections, a product or celebrity zooming from total obscurity to viral sensation, or anonymously sourced articles becoming national conversation, someone is behind it. Often someone like Ryan Holiday. As he explains, “I wrote this book to explain how media manipulators work, how to spot their fingerprints, how to fight them, and how (if you must) to emulate their tactics. Why am I giving away these secrets? Because I’m tired of a world where trolls hijack debates, marketers help write the news, opinion masquerades as fact, algorithms drive everything to extremes, and no one is accountable for any of it. I’m pulling back the curtain because it’s time the public understands how things really work. What you choose to do with this information is up to you.”
Download or read book Just Trust Me written by G. Randy Kasten and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUVs are the safest vehicle because they’re so large-right? Wrong! That’s the advertising pitch, but in 2000, they had the highest rollover rate (36%) of any vehicle type involved in fatal accidents. Yet two years later their safety myth was still so strong that one of four vehicles sold in the U. S. was an SUV The world of spin we live in is full of such potentially hazardous illusions. We need to know if particular foods can hurt us with Salmonella or cholesterol, whether our government is truthful in its reasons for waging war, what problems a political candidate may cause or resolve if elected, and whether the items we purchase are durable or junk. But gaining those insights can be challenging when so many of the illusions surrounding us are deliberately created. As a civil-litigation attorney for over twenty-five years, Randy Kasten has heard thousands of lies. He has witnessed that those who dispense the information we need to make decisions-advertisers, salespeople, politicians, and the media-often have a vested interest in manipulating us. Truth’s biggest enemies are the people whose job it is to sell us incomplete versions of the facts and our willingness to believe what we want to believe. Often, we believe what we believe because it is the only story available. To help us see through deceptions of all types, Kasten discusses eight kinds of lies and what we can do about them, as well as methods for discerning the truth gleaned from his practice of law. Other topics include advertising magic, thirty-six places where the truth hides, lessons from science, the media and misinformation, and how we fool ourselves. Altogether, he provides a unique tool for enabling us to make decisions that will lead to more prosperity, better health, greater intimacy, and a life based on lasting values

Download or read book Believe Me I Was There written by Hacene Zitouni and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe Me is a lively and dramatic account of one man's struggle to make two cultures meet. In 1990 Zitouni started broadcasting news for MBC (Middle-eastern Broadcasting Company) in Arabic from London. MBC was the first station to give Arab viewers, at home and in the worldwide diaspora, their own news programmes. For the first time, interviewees were heard speaking demotic Arabic of their own regions. MBC's Western impartiality and lack of deference was controversial but on the whole, popular. As a country boy born into newly independent Algeria in the 1960s, Zitouni had been educated by the state and sent to Britain on a journalism scholarship. He became a war correspondent in '91. His career has taken him to trouble spots in Yemen, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Somalia, Bosnia, Indonesia and many other countries. He has made Panorama-style documentaries in both American continents and interviewed historic figures. He was detained and interrogated by Gaddafi's army for many weeks, and interviewed some of the wilder insurgents fighting Bashar al Assad. Zitouni recounts the ups and downs of his own fast-developing career against a background in which commercial and local political considerations have come to play a much greater part. Based for many years in London, Paris and Dubai, he has seen the agenda of Arab television changing. Although MBC is funded by the Saudi royal family, its ethos when it began was impartial and cautiously liberal. In 1994, after a culture clash with a new BBC Arabic service, the Qatari royals set up the rival Al Jazeera to do what MBC had always done. In response, MBC changed tack, offering multiple entertainment streams and eventually a subsidiary: a re-invention of its original news channel called Al Arabiya. While all this was going on Zitouni was Director General of a third channel that promised to lead the field - but turned out to belong to a billionaire fraudster. Now he shows us where Arab TV seems to be going...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rapidly changing world, are we on the brink of creating technology that outpaces our ability to control it? Astrophysicist J. Craig Wheeler, former president of the American Astronomical Society, takes a critical look at the technological advances shaping our future. From artificial intelligence to genetic engineering, Wheeler explores how these innovations are interconnected and the potential they hold for humanity's evolution. He warns of a future where autonomous machines outsmart us and genetic modifications challenge our very essence. With thought-provoking insights into the ethical dilemmas we face, Wheeler stresses the importance of staying informed and proactive. Key Questions Raised by Wheeler: Will there be jobs for those willing to work in a future dominated by automation? How might social media companies manipulate our decisions, potentially stripping us of free will? Could AI influence or even dictate our voting behaviors? If widespread mental connectivity becomes a reality, could we see the emergence of a collective consciousness that erases individuality? Have we exhausted Earth's resources, and is population control necessary? What implications arise if we solve aging? How will society adapt to the challenges of perpetual youth? What are the realistic prospects of migrating to space as Earth becomes increasingly inhospitable? Our decisions today will determine if we control technology or if it controls us. Through an engaging narrative, Wheeler not only outlines the challenges but also offers practical advice on how we can retain control over our technological destiny. Includes a Foreword by Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
