Book True Worship and the Consequences of Idolatry

Download or read book True Worship and the Consequences of Idolatry written by John Knox and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know the difference between true and false worship? Can false worship be true worship? Is God honored by false worship even when you are sincere in giving it? Knox defines idolatry as, “all worshipping, honoring, or service invented by the brain of man in the religion of God, without his own express commandment.” Are you an idolater? As much as this might be a hard question to consider, it is an appropriate question in light of God’s directives in Scripture to regard him as holy in corporate worship. In considering the sin of idolatry, whether directly worshipping sticks, stones and idols, or being part of a deviant worship service in a 21st century church, such thoughts on worship are exceedingly relevant for us today. Without coming to God as God requires, we do not worship God as he has instructed us in scripture. Knox’s treatise on True and False Worship demonstrates the inescapable consequence to consider whether you are worshipping God in the vanity of your own mind, being directed by the dictates of another aberrant mind, or, whether you are engaging in true worship as God requires. Considering this is not a vain thing, for as God says to Moses, “For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life,” (Deut. 32:47). Professing Christians must consider that it is God alone who determines the manner in which sinners approach him. On this, and this alone, they are to tender up to God his due. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: A launching pad for your spiritual journey, this inspiring book provides clear, specific, and practical guidelines for becoming a Christian who lives like Christ. Christians today live in a world that is activity heavy and relationship light. The result is spiritual emptiness. We struggle to know what God wants from us and for us . . . and we’re unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like. But that was never God’s idea. HIS idea of faith is not about rules or religion— it’s about relationship. That’s where God tells us to start. In Romans 12, God gives us a clear picture of what Christians should look like at the root level. If you’re ready to move from “in” to “all in,” then you’re ready to become a Romans 12 Christian. The next steps of your journey toward true spirituality start here.

Book excerpt: The issue of idolatry has been with the human race for thousands of years; the subtle temptation is always to take what is good and turn it into the ultimate good, elevating it above all other things in the search for security and meaning. In this timely and challenging book, New York pastor Timothy Keller looks at the issue of idolatry throughout the Bible -- from the worship of actual idols in the Old Testament, to the idolatry of money by the rich young ruler when he was challenged by Jesus to give up all his wealth. Using classic stories from the Bible Keller cuts through our dependence on the glittering false idols of money, sex and power to uncover the path towards trust in the real ultimate -- God. Today's idols may look different from those of the Old Testament, but Keller argues that they are no less damaging. Culturally transforming as well as biblically based, COUNTERFEIT GODS is a powerful look at the temptation to worship what can only disappoint, and is a vital message in today's current climate of financial and social difficulty.

Download or read book People to Be Loved written by Preston Sprinkle and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians who are confused by the homosexuality debate raging in the US are looking for resources that are based solidly on a deep study of what Scripture says about the issue. In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in light of it. In a manner that appeals to a scholarly and lay-audience alike, Preston takes on difficult questions such as how should the church treat people struggling with same-sex attraction? Is same-sex attraction a product of biological or societal factors or both? How should the church think about larger cultural issues, such as gay marriage, gay pride, and whether intolerance over LGBT amounts to racism? How (or if) Christians should do business with LGBT persons and supportive companies? Simply saying that the Bible condemns homosexuality is not accurate, nor is it enough to end the debate. Those holding a traditional view still struggle to reconcile the Bible’s prohibition of same-sex attraction with the message of radical, unconditional grace. This book meets that need.

Book Idolatry

Download or read book Idolatry written by Moshe Halbertal and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You shall have no other gods besides Me.” This injunction, handed down through Moses three thousand years ago, marks one of the most decisive shifts in Western culture: away from polytheism toward monotheism. Despite the momentous implications of such a turn, the role of idolatry in giving it direction and impetus is little understood. This book examines the meaning and nature of idolatry—and, in doing so, reveals much about the monotheistic tradition that defines itself against this sin.The authors consider Christianity and Islam, but focus primarily on Judaism. They explore competing claims about the concept of idolatry that emerges in the Hebrew Bible as a “whoring after false gods.” Does such a description, grounded in an analogy of sexual relations, presuppose the actual existence of other gods with whom someone might sin? Or are false gods the product of “men’s hands,” simply a matter of misguided belief? The authors show how this debate, over idolatry as practice or error, has taken shape and has in turn shaped the course of Western thought—from the differentiation between Jewish and Christian conceptions of God to the distinctions between true and false belief that inform the tradition of religious enlightenment.Ranging with authority from the Talmud to Maimonides, from Marx to Nietzsche and on to G.E. Moore, this brilliant account of a subject central to our culture also has much to say about metaphor, myth, and the application of philosophical analysis to religious concepts and sensibilities. Its insights into pluralism and intolerance, into the logic and illogic of the arguments religions aim at each other, make Idolatry especially timely and valuable in these days of dark and implacable religious difference.

Book Broken Idols of the English Reformation

Download or read book Broken Idols of the English Reformation written by Margaret Aston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were so many religious images and objects broken and damaged in the course of the Reformation? Margaret Aston's magisterial new book charts the conflicting imperatives of destruction and rebuilding throughout the English Reformation from the desecration of images, rails and screens to bells, organs and stained glass windows. She explores the motivations of those who smashed images of the crucifixion in stained glass windows and who pulled down crosses and defaced symbols of the Trinity. She shows that destruction was part of a methodology of religious revolution designed to change people as well as places and to forge in the long term new generations of new believers. Beyond blanked walls and whited windows were beliefs and minds impregnated by new modes of religious learning. Idol-breaking with its emphasis on the treacheries of images fundamentally transformed not only Anglican ways of worship but also of seeing, hearing and remembering.

Book No Gods But God

Download or read book No Gods But God written by Dennis Newkirk and published by Hh Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that so many of us settle for a less-than-satisfying Christian life? We suffer the symptoms-spiritual dryness, dissatisfaction, and unanswered prayers-of a yet-unidentified problem that creates an obstacle between God and us. We seem unable to connect the dots between our symptoms and the problem causing them: God is no longer first in our hearts. Pastor Dennis Newkirk shares how God revealed to their church their idolatry. The lessons were difficult, but the result was an extraordinary spiritual revival and much deeper fellowship with God. No gods but God is about learning to confront our modern-day idolatry and how God uses a four-step pattern to call our hearts back to him. Examining our own lives before God and admitting that our hearts have strayed isn't easy, and it is most certainly humbling. But that's what God wants-a humbled, repentant person standing before him willing to be used in service for him. Let No gods but God show you the way.

Book The Baal Conspiracy

Download or read book The Baal Conspiracy written by Al Truesdale and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compromised worship has serious roots-and serious consequences. The Israelites can vouch for that. Through an effort to have the best of both worlds, they spent centuries attempting to worship both Yahweh and the fertility god, Baal. With this misguided concept of the true God and true worship, the Israelites' lives became immersed in a conspiracy to maintain a love of God and a love of everyday gods. In The Baal Conspiracy, author Al Truesdale exposes the truth behind what this Baal conspiracy meant for the Israelites: that God, in fact, cannot be denied or shared in any form of worship. With solid biblical scholarship, Truesdale employs historical fiction to explain and explore how Christians can confront and defeat the Baal conspiracy in the Church and in daily living.

If this was your first thought, you couldn't be more wrong! The problem of idols and idolatry is not an outdated practice of extinct religions; it's actually alive and flourishing today in our "modern" society. True, our current idols aren't typically made of wood, stone, or gold. That's because idolatry is simply the act of loving and worshipping something or someone more than the one person who actually deserves it – God Himself. So by this definition, we can turn anything or anyone into our personal idol –and we will suffer for it! Most people, even Christians, who practice idolatry aren't even aware of it, but here they are suffering spiritually, emotionally, and even physically but can't seem to connect the dots between misery and the practice of idolatry. This study guide was developed to help people find out if idolatry is a bigger problem than you realized. It was put together to help you - and maybe a group of your friends - get real and get honest with each other and with God. This guide was designed to complement the book, Too Many Lovers and to go deeper into God's truth together. It's an opportunity to discover the freedom you've only dreamed of! This study guide is packed with information, examples, challenging questions, practical steps, and personal application to move you from bondage into personal healing!

Book excerpt: Abstract theology is overrated, for God can be found in even the most ordinary of things. Jesus used things like a lily, sparrow, and sheep to teach about the kingdom of God. And in the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, or eagle. In God of All Things, pastor and author Andrew Wilson invites you to rediscover God in this way, too--through ordinary, everyday things. He explores the idea of a material world and presents a variety of created marvels that reveal the gospel in everyday life and fuel worship and joy in God--marvels like: Dust: the image of God Horns: the salvation of God Donkeys: the peace of God Water: the life of God Viruses: the problem of God Cities: the kingdom of God God of All Things will leave you with a deeper understanding of Scripture, the world you live in, and the God who made it all.
