Roberts on "Succession in the Presidency of the Church" The only apology needed for the appearance of this work is, that we have been attacked, and it is both a privilege and a duty to respond. Some have thought the church was too slow and should have replied long ago. But had we rushed into print when the work of Mr. Roberts first appeared, we would have done so unadvisedly. We did not know whether he was authorized to write or not; nor did we know whether the church he represented would indorse his positions; hence no one was appointed to reply; though it was not lost sight of, and several, of the elders upon their own responsibility were carefully collecting material; for use in such reply. Now that the representatives of the church in Utah, both in Europe and America, have made it their chief weapon of attack and defense, we think the opportune time has come, for they are thus pledged to its support. Further, we have the direct testimony of Mr. Roberts that the First Presidency in Utah indorsed his work. The book was copyrighted in February, 1894. In the latter part of the year 1895 Mr. Roberts, together with Moses Thatcher, fell under the displeasure of church authorities for his political actions; while under the ban of disapproval he was interviewed, and the interview published in the Salt Lake Tribune for October 14, 1895. This book features the teachings of President Joseph F. Smith, who said: “To be Latter-day Saints, men or women must be thinkers, and workers; they must be men and women who weigh matters in their minds, men and women who consider carefully their course of life and the principles that they have espoused. … When people understand the gospel of Jesus Christ, you will see them walking straightforward, according to the word of the Lord, and the law of God, strictly in accordance with that which is consistent, just, righteous, and in every sense acceptable to the Lord.” Each chapter in this book includes four sections: (1) a statement that briefly summarizes the focus of the chapter; (2) “From the Life of Joseph F. These original sources are not necessary to have in order to effectively study or teach from this book. Members need not purchase additional references and commentaries to study or teach these chapters. The text provided in this book, accompanied by the scriptures, is sufficient for instruction. Members should prayerfully read and study President Young’s teachings in order to gain new insights into gospel principles and discover how those principles apply to their everyday lives. By faithfully and prayerfully studying these selections, Latter-day Saints will have a greater understanding of gospel principles and will more fully appreciate the profound and inspired teachings of this great prophet. The second section of each chapter offers a series of questions that will encourage thoughtful contemplation, personal application, and discussion of President Young’s teachings. Members should refer to and carefully reread his words on the principle being discussed. Deep and prayerful study of these teachings will inspire members to greater personal commitment and will help them resolve to follow the teachings of the Savior, Jesus Christ. If individuals and families prayerfully follow the principles in this book, they will be blessed and inspired to greater dedication and spirituality, as were the early Saints who heard these words directly from the lips of the “Lion of the Lord” (HC, 7:434)—the prophet, seer, and revelator, President Brigham Young.
