Book The Deep Places

Download or read book The Deep Places written by Ross Douthat and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • In this vulnerable, insightful memoir, the New York Times columnist tells the story of his five-year struggle with a disease that officially doesn’t exist, exploring the limits of modern medicine, the stories that we unexpectedly fall into, and the secrets that only suffering reveals. “A powerful memoir about our fragile hopes in the face of chronic illness.”—Kate Bowler, bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason In the summer of 2015, Ross Douthat was moving his family, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife, from Washington, D.C., to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless, crippled, wracked with pain--a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno, he discovered that he had a disease which according to CDC definitions does not actually exist: the chronic form of Lyme disease, a hotly contested condition that devastates the lives of tens of thousands of people but has no official recognition--and no medically approved cure. From a rural dream house that now felt like a prison, Douthat's search for help takes him off the map of official medicine, into territory where cranks and conspiracies abound and patients are forced to take control of their own treatment and experiment on themselves. Slowly, against his instincts and assumptions, he realizes that many of the cranks and weirdos are right, that many supposed "hypochondriacs" are victims of an indifferent medical establishment, and that all kinds of unexpected experiences and revelations lurk beneath the surface of normal existence, in the places underneath. The Deep Places is a story about what happens when you are terribly sick and realize that even the doctors who are willing to treat you can only do so much. Along the way, Douthat describes his struggle back toward health with wit and candor, portraying sickness as the most terrible of gifts. It teaches you to appreciate the grace of ordinary life by taking that life away from you. It reveals the deep strangeness of the world, the possibility that the reasonable people might be wrong, and the necessity of figuring out things for yourself. And it proves, day by dreadful day, that you are stronger than you ever imagined, and that even in the depths there is always hope.

Book Bitten

  • Author : Kris Newby
  • Publisher : HarperCollins

  • ISBN : 0062896296
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Bitten written by Kris Newby and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting thriller reminiscent of The Hot Zone, this true story dives into the mystery surrounding one of the most controversial and misdiagnosed conditions of our time—Lyme disease—and of Willy Burgdorfer, the man who discovered the microbe behind it, revealing his secret role in developing bug-borne biological weapons, and raising terrifying questions about the genesis of the epidemic of tick-borne diseases affecting millions of Americans today. While on vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, Kris Newby was bitten by an unseen tick. That one bite changed her life forever, pulling her into the abyss of a devastating illness that took ten doctors to diagnose and years to recover: Newby had become one of the 300,000 Americans who are afflicted with Lyme disease each year. As a science writer, she was driven to understand why this disease is so misunderstood, and its patients so mistreated. This quest led her to Willy Burgdorfer, the Lyme microbe’s discoverer, who revealed that he had developed bug-borne bioweapons during the Cold War, and believed that the Lyme epidemic was started by a military experiment gone wrong. In a superb, meticulous work of narrative journalism, Bitten takes readers on a journey to investigate these claims, from biological weapons facilities to interviews with biosecurity experts and microbiologists doing cutting-edge research, all the while uncovering darker truths about Willy. It also leads her to uncomfortable questions about why Lyme can be so difficult to both diagnose and treat, and why the government is so reluctant to classify chronic Lyme as a disease. A gripping, infectious page-turner, Bitten will shed a terrifying new light on an epidemic that is exacting an incalculable toll on us, upending much of what we believe we know about it.

Book excerpt: From the star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills comes an emotional and eye opening behind-the-scenes look at her descent into uncovering the mystery of chronic Lyme disease. In early 2011, Yolanda was struck by mysterious symptoms including brain fog, severe exhaustion, migraines and more. Over the months and years that followed, she went from being an outspoken, multi-tasking, hands-on mother of three, reality TV star, and social butterfly, to a woman who spent most of her time in bed. Yolanda was turned inside out by some of the country’s top hospitals and doctors, but due to the lack of definitive diagnostic testing, she landed in a dark maze of conflicting medical opinions, where many were quick to treat her symptoms but could never provide clear answers to their possible causes. In this moving, behind the scenes memoir, Yolanda Hadid opens up in a way she has never been able to in the media before. Suffering from late stage Lyme, a disease that is an undeniable epidemic and more debilitating than anyone realizes, Yolanda had to fight with everything she had to hold onto her life. While her struggle was lived publicly, it impacted her privately in every aspect of her existence, affecting her family, friends and professional prospects. Her perfect marriage became strained and led to divorce. It was the strong bond with her children, Gigi, Bella and Anwar, that provided her greatest motivation to fight through the darkest days of her life. Hers is an emotional narrative and all-important read for anyone unseated by an unexpected catastrophe. With candor, authenticity and an unwavering inner strength, Yolanda reveals intimate details of her journey crisscrossing the world to find answers for herself and two of her children who suffer from Lyme and shares her tireless research into eastern and western medicine. Book My Bizarre Odyssey Into Mold and Lyme Hell and Back

Download or read book My Bizarre Odyssey Into Mold and Lyme Hell and Back written by Tony Hadley and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real life drama of the fight for my life after getting sick from toxic mold and Lyme Disease, losing just about everything, then finally being able to recover my health and my life What happened when I found toxic mold in my house You'll read about the absolute hell that I went through after discovering toxic mold in my house. The events that unfolded after that were so bizarre, so surreal, so horrifying that now it's still hard to believe that I went through it all. It was truly an odyssey, an unfolding drama where, it seemed, every door was locked, every corner I turned presented another obstacle, and every possibility became an improbability. My house was totally ripped apart in the mold remediation. And the illness caused by the mold made me sick to the point of being in pain most of the time with depression and suicidal thoughts, and even an attempt. I had to make important decisions in my life while I had "brain fog" which prevents the ability to think. So, I made many bad decisions which made my situation worse. I was never able to live in my house again and ended up losing practically everything. It was a quest to find a place to live and ended up in a couple house shares with strangers, at one point with a confirmed psychopath. Lyme Disease and what it can do to the body As my journey continued I found out that I had Lyme Disease and became so toxic (with the neurotoxins from the mold and Lyme disease) that life became unreal for me, a de-realization and depersonalization took over. While this was happening, I developed Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, MCS, as well as Electrical Sensitivity, ES, also referred to as Electrical Hyper Sensitivity, EHS. It made finding a "safe" place to live nearly impossible. The odyssey is mostly about trying to find a safe place to stay when I had painful reactions being near any electromagnetic fields (including all wireless technologies), certain chemicals and any mold or bacteria. It is a fight also against the medical establishment and their ignorance of chronic, environmental or toxic illnesses. Because of the their ignorance, I was put in a hospital which created a whole new scenario of pain and drama, where they said "it's all in your head." It was a struggle for my sanity against a world that's so embedded in the pharmaceutical companies, "big pharma," that they actually ignore patients' concerns and symptoms, and make them worse. The road back to wellness and sanity Fortunately, I was able to find the right doctor and support psychologist to help me to get better. The psychologist kept me sane and the doctor helped me with the illness. There is a genetic component to people who get really sick from mold or Lyme. This was the case with me and the work of Dr. Richie Shoemaker made it possible for me to get better when all odds were against me, and the fatalistic outlook from the brain fog made it seem like the hell would never end. But I made it back from the abyss and got better and was able to rebuild my life. This story, it is my hope, will inspire others who are suffering from some chronic or environmental illness to keep fighting to get better. You are not alone and it is not "all in your head." I lay out what I did to protect myself along the way and the modalities I used to get my health back. You can get better too. This adventure will help you and point you in the right direction. Book Conquering Lyme Disease

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian A. Fallon
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-12-12
  • ISBN : 0231545185
  • Pages : 608 pages

Download or read book Conquering Lyme Disease written by Brian A. Fallon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, with more than 300,000 cases diagnosed each year. However, doctors are deeply divided on how to diagnose and treat it, giving rise to the controversy known as the “Lyme Wars.” Firmly entrenched camps have emerged, causing physicians, patient communities, and insurance providers to be pitted against one another in a struggle to define Lyme disease and its clinical challenges. Health care providers may not be aware of its diverse manifestations or the limitations of diagnostic tests. Meanwhile, patients have felt dismissed by their doctors and confused by the conflicting opinions and dubious self-help information found online. In this authoritative book, the Columbia University Medical Center physicians Brian A. Fallon and Jennifer Sotsky explain that, despite the vexing “Lyme Wars,” there is cause for both doctors and patients to be optimistic. The past decade’s advances in precision medicine and biotechnology are reshaping our understanding of Lyme disease and accelerating the discovery of new tools to diagnose and treat it, such that the great divide previously separating medical communities is now being bridged. Drawing on both extensive clinical experience and cutting-edge research, Fallon, Sotsky, and their colleagues present these paradigm-shifting breakthroughs in language accessible to both sides. They clearly explain the immunologic, infectious, and neurologic basis of chronic symptoms, the cognitive and psychological impact of the disease, as well as current and emerging diagnostic tests, treatments, and prevention strategies. Written for the educated patient and health care provider seeking to learn more, Conquering Lyme Disease gives an up-to-the-minute overview of the science that is transforming the way we address this complex illness. It argues forcefully that the expanding plague of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases can be confronted successfully and may soon even be reversed.

Download or read book Chronic written by Steven Phillips and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoimmune and chronic illness are a global crisis, with an estimated 50 million sufferers in the US alone. While modern medicine has drastically reduced overall mortality rates--from heart disease, stroke, HIV, and even cancer--what is fueling this twenty-first century pandemic? In this eye-opening, provocative book, Steven Phillips, MD, and his former patient, singer/songwriter Dana Parish, take on the medical establishment. Backed by a trove of published data, Chronic reveals striking evidence that a broad range of microbes, including the Lyme bacteria, cause a variety of recurrent conditions and autoimmune diseases. Chronic delves into the history and science behind common infections that are difficult to diagnose and treat, debunks widely held beliefs by doctors and patients alike, reveals how medicine got the facts patently wrong, and provides solutions that empower readers to get their lives back. Dr. Phillips was already an internationally renowned physician specializing in complex, chronic diseases when he became a patient himself. After nearly dying from his own mystery illness, he experienced firsthand the medical community's ignorance about the pathogens that underlie a range of chronic conditions--from fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis to depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disorders. Parish, too, watched her health spiral after twelve top doctors missed an underlying infection that caused heart failure and other sudden, debilitating physical and psychiatric symptoms. Now, they've come together with a mission: to change the current model of simply treating symptoms, often with dangerous, lifelong drugs, and shift the focus to finding and curing root causes of chronic diseases that affect millions around the world.
