Book excerpt: Excerpt from True and Beautiful It must be remembered, that in nearly all the great periods of art the choice of subject has not been left to the painter. His employer, abbot, baron, or monarch, - determined for him whether he should earn his bread by making cloisters bright with choirs of saints, painting coats of arms on leaves of romances, or deco rating presence-chambers with complimentary mythology; and his own personal feelings are ascertainable only by watching, in the themes assigned to him, what are the points in which he seems to take most pleasure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy is too great and too terrible when encountered directly for men of normal sanity to be able to contemplate it comfortably. Only those who cannot care for the consequences run the risk of the direct confrontation of the Holy. This book is a study of six men who ran this risk. Balancing the negative and positive points of view throughout these six essays, Jaroslav Pelikan has written a brilliant examination of the three questions: the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. With Kierkegaard and Paul, Dr. Pelikan looks into the relationship between the True and the Holy. With Dostoevsky and Luther, it is the Good and the Holy and with Nietzche and Bach, it is the Beautiful and the Holy. In the first two he draws on the whole history of Western thought. In the second two, he looks into the background of Christian morality, and in the last two, he reaches all the way back to the Greeks in his penetrating study of Western aesthetics. Philosophy, theology, ethics, and aesthetics - they are all here. Beyond them all, Dr. Pelikan shows how the Holy cannot be captured and held by any of them, although the attempt is frequently made. Rather the Holy must remain unqualified, transfiguring within itself the experience of the True, the Good, or the Beautiful.

Download or read book A Woman Pure and True and Noble Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Woman Pure and True and Noble May this be a moment of pride for us all even in the presence of that awful thing we call Death. We all sorrow now, but there are those to whom the load has come in almost crushing weight, and even with suddenness. The days of a year have passed away since last this dear one ceased to walk among the peo ple of this church. Bless those upon whom the blow has fallen with greatest severity, O God, and give unto those who walk among us yet strength to bear the days of mourning, for the days will not be many before we too will go hence and be no more. We thank Thee for her life filled, as it was, with gentle care and sweet ministry. Only those who came near to her know how rich that life was of the things that make for character, for righteousness, for blessed ness and for life. Grant, O God, that though no longer here, that spirit may abide, and that the things that have come out of her life, gracious, tender, sacred and sweet, may continue to abide among these people and bless them in the days that are yet to be. Give courage of heart, and hope, and joy, and life, and light unto him who loved her so much and whose heart is now heavy with sorrow. Some of us are thinking even now of other days of sadness, and of other dear ones, and the gates of memory swing open and the ood comes upon our souls as we think of those days, and of the loved ones who have been taken away; as we think of these things may the memory be sweet unto our souls and may it strengthen our spirit, and may we go forth from this holy place into the world again, better men, better women, better children, for meeting here this after noon and for having meditated upon the life and the character and the services of this one who has passed beyond the portals into the everlasting habitations. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the True, the Beautiful and the Good God, author and type of humanity, who, after having evidently made man for an excellent end, will not aban don him in the mysterious development of his destiny. This philosophy is the natural ally of all good causes. It sustains religious sentiment; it seconds true art, pocsy worthy of the name, and a great literature; it is the sup. Port of right; it equally repels the craft of the dema gogue and tyranny; it teaches all men to respect and value themselves, and, little by little, it conducts human societies to the true republic, that dream of all generous souls which in our times can be realized in Europe only by constitutional monarchy. To aid, with all our power, in setting up, defending, and propagating this noble philosophy, such is the object that early inspired us, that has sustained during a career already lengthy, in which difficulties have not been wanting. Thank God, time has rather strength ened than weakened our convictions, and we end as we began: this new edition of one of our first works is a last effort in favor of the holy cause for which we have combated nearly forty years.
