Book Understanding Saving

Download or read book Understanding Saving written by Fumio Hayashi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of consumption and saving decisions by households has always been one of the most active areas of research in economics--and with good reason. Private consumption is the most important component of aggregate demand in a capitalist economy, and explaining consumption is the key element in most macroeconomic forecasting models. To evaluate the effect of government policies invariably requires the knowledge of how they change parameters relevant for household decision making. Understanding Saving collects eleven papers by economist Fumio Hayashi, along with two previously unpublished chapters, for a total of thirteen chapters. The monograph, which brings together Hayashi's empirical research on saving, is divided into three sections. Part I, "Liquidity Constraints", contains five studies that test the well-known implication of the Life Cycle-Permanent Income hypothesis that households shield consumption from income fluctuations. Part II, "Risk-Sharing and Altruism", contains three papers that examine the interactions between related and unrelated households predicted by the hypothesis for the US and Japanese households. The three papers in Part III, "Japanese Saving Behavior", present the author's explanation of the high saving rate in postwar Japan.

Book China s Age of Abundance

Download or read book China s Age of Abundance written by Feng Wang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1980s and the present day, China has experienced one of the most consequential economic transformations in world history. One-fifth of the Earth's population has left behind a life of scarcity and subsistence for one of abundance and material comfort, while their nation has emerged as a preeminent economic and political power. In a systematic historical and sociological analysis of this unique juncture, Wang Feng charts the origins, forces, and consequences of this meteoric rise in living standards. He shifts the focus away from institutions and policies to offer new perspectives based on consumption among poorer, rural populations as a driver of global economic change. But is this 'Age of Abundance' coming to an end? Anticipating potential headwinds, including an aging population, increasing inequality, and intensifying political control, Wang explores whether this preeminence could be coming to a close.

Book Understanding Inequalities

Download or read book Understanding Inequalities written by Lucinda Platt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the latest empirical evidence with a discussion of sociological debates surrounding inequality, this book explores a broad range of inequalities in people's lives. As well as treating the core sociological topics of class, ethnicity and gender, it examines how inequalities are experienced across a variety of settings, including education, health, geography and housing, income and wealth, and how they cumulate across the life course. Richly illustrated with graphs and figures showing the extent of inequalities and the differences between social groups, the book demonstrates how people's lives are structured by inequalities across multiple dimensions of their lives. Throughout, the text pays attention to how we know what we know about inequality: what is measured and how, what is left out of the picture, and what implications this has for our understanding of specific inequalities. Importantly, the book also highlights the intersections between different sources or forms of inequality, and the ways that bringing an intersectional lens to bear on topics can highlight and challenge the assumptions about how they operate. Designed for second-year undergraduates and above, this book provides an engaging overview of social stratification and challenges readers to think about how inequalities are embedded across society.
