Book A School based Truancy Intervention

Download or read book A School based Truancy Intervention written by Leo Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to design a program, identify potential funding sources, and write a grant to fund a truancy intervention program that would help to reduce the rates of truancy at a school district in Southern California. An extensive literature review increased knowledge about the problem and consequences of truancy and provided information about evidence-based truancy intervention programs. This information was used as the foundation for the proposed program. The goal of the proposed program aimed to involve the family, schools, and community in order to reduce truancy rates. A search for potential funding sources was made through various websites and a grant database that resulted in the selection of the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice's collaborative Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative grant. A grant was then written to meet the requirements for funding of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative grant.

Book Truancy Prevention and Intervention

Download or read book Truancy Prevention and Intervention written by Lynn Bye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that truancy is frequently associated with juvenile crime and dropping out of school altogether. With the high dropout rate in the U.S. and the No Child Left Behind Act holding schools accountable for their dropout rates, it is essential for school social workers to contribute to their schools' improvement plan in meeting annual yearly progress benchmarks. This book, by well respected researchers and practitioners who have extensive experience with truancy, covers best practices in truancy at the community, school, and student/family levels of interventions. It provides an essential everyday reference guide to research-based programs and truancy program implementation. Beginning with an introduction to the essentials of truancy, its causes and consequences, and state and federal legislation, the authors then give readers a snapshot of what research has shown to work so far and what adaptations might look like in various school settings. Richly detailed case examples illustrate multiple levels of intervention, from the school-wide prevention and general policy levels to remedial interventions, including culturally competent approaches. Eminently practical and easily accessible, with sample forms, methods of measuring outcomes, ideas for funding, take-away points, and digestible research summaries, this will be a trusted toolkit for school professionals seeking to reduce their schools' dropout rates and improve students' engagement with school. School-based practitioners and student trainees alike will find a wealth of reliable information about what is seemingly an intractable problem. They can immediately begin implementing the proven and promising practices presented in this practical guide.

Download or read book Adolescents at Risk written by Joy G. Dryfoos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-08-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven million youngsters--one in four adolescents--have only limited potential for becoming productive adults because they are at high risk for encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities. This is one of the disturbing findings in this unique overview of what is known about young people aged 10 to 17 growing up in the United States today. The book explores four problem areas that are the subject of a great deal of public interest and social concern: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. In examining these problem areas, Dryfoos has three objectives: to present a more cogent picture of adolescents who are at risk of problem behaviors and where they fit in society; to synthesize the experience of programs that have been successful in changing various aspects of these behaviors; and to propose strategies for using this knowledge base to implement more effective approaches to helping youngsters succeed. Among the key concepts emerging from this study are the importance of intense individual attention, social skills training, exposure to the world of work, and packaging components in broad, community-wide interventions. Schools are recognized as the focal institution in prevention, not only in regard to helping children achieve academically, but in giving young people access to social support and health programs. The author also proposes comprehensive youth development initiatives at the local, state and national level, based on programs shown to be effective in real practice. This landmark, state-of-the-art study represents an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the welfare and current problems of youth, including psychologists, sociologists, school administrators, state and federal officials, policymakers, and concerned parents.
