Book excerpt: Excerpt from Troy: Its Legend, History and Literature, With a Sketch of the Topography of the Troad in the Light of Recent Investigation The time seems to have come, however, for a fuller version of the Trojan legend, without either addition or important omission, as it was familiarly known to the ancients, who had access to many epics and traditions of which we have no knowledge except by extracts or allusions in the scholiasts, historians, and later Poets of Alexandria and Rome. In no one place can an entire account of the legend now be found. It is scattered in fragments throughout the epic, dramatic, philosophic, and critical writings of antiquity still extant, and is given with more or less fullness by modern historians; but is nowhere, so far as the writer is aware, presented in its complete form. Book Troy and Her Legend

Download or read book Troy and Her Legend written by Arthur Milton Young and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1948-03-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of legend is that it is never simply an old tale retold. Though the legend may be old, its meaning and influence is new in each retelling and for each new group of listeners.Young provides here a "biography" of the greatest of the classical legends, the story of the fall of Troy. As he states in his book, the greatness of the legend does not depend on its relation to historical reality, but "lies rather in the beauty and variety it has called out of the creative imaginations of artists, from Homer down to modern times, artists who with varied skill and in many forms have expressed their individual genius." Young's text is beautifully illustrated with examples of art inspired by the legend, from literature, painting, ceramics, tapestry, sculpture, and the opera, with fresh interpretations of their meaning. The legend of Troy has survived more than 3,000 years in the art of many-from Quintus of Smyrna to Tennyson to Christopher Morley, Guerin to Baroccio to Strauss-and archaeological excavations in our own time have only enriched the imaginations of contemporary artists and scholars. In deepening our knowledge of classic texts and their changing interpretations over time, Young argues, we enhance our understanding both of the classics and of the successive civilizations they have influenced.

Book excerpt: For many centuries the Trojan War occupies minds and thoughts of many great writers and scientists all around the world. Whether there is any historical reality behind it or it is just a legend, the war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature. The most notable works about the Trojan War are Homer's Iliad and Odyssey which describe a period of four days and two nights in the tenth year of the decade-long siege of Troy, and the journey home of Odysseus, one of the war's heroes. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems, which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid._x000D_ This book, The Trojan War, is an excellent starting point for anyone curious about this great story. It presents all the main charters and events described in many works of Greek literature. Not only is this book the key that opens the doors to the world of Greek literature and mythology to those who wish to explore it in depth but it also provides more than enough fascinating facts and information about one of the most notable conflicts in history.

Book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint written by M. Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Troy is a work of history written by author and historian M. Clarke. It is an excellent choice for those wishing to familiarise themselves with the story in a quick and efficient manner. Clarke opens his book with a brief discussion of Homer, author of The Iliad and The Odyssey, and whose writing serves as a major source of information about the history of Troy. The author then begins his interpretation of Troy with several chapters examining the city's geography and geo-political status. Of course, any history of Troy must address the Trojan War, and it is on this topic that Clarke spends the majority of his time. The writings of Homer, as translated by Alexander Pope, serve as Clarke's primary source of information about the war. The book proceeds in a logical fashion, and concludes with a chapter on the death of Achilles and the status of the Greek chiefs after the war. Clarke has created a well-written account of Troy's history. Although written in the nineteenth century, and therefore lacking in some of the historical breakthroughs of the modern world, The Story of Troy is still an interesting and useful interpretation of the events detailed. Clarke's writing is concise and definitive and this book could best be categorized as an introductory history. Readers interested in a basic history of Troy will enjoy The Story of Troy. Clarke's passion is clear and his work here is commendable. This title is a worthy addition to the personal library of history enthusiasts everywhere. Troy was an ancient city located at Hisarlik in present-day Turkey, and in ancient Greek literature, it is depicted as a powerful kingdom of the Heroic Age, a mythical period when monsters and gods interacted directly with humans. The city is believed to have ruled the Troad until the Trojan War, which resulted in its complete destruction at the hands of the Greeks.
