Download or read book Troubles in the Balkans Classic Reprint written by John L. C. Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Troubles in the Balkans The Bulgarians five hundred years ago were a great nation. When the Turks swept up into Europe from the Mediterranean and conquered them they were put under the Greek Church for their religious discipline and educa tion, and the influence of the Churchman in the life of Eastern countries is immense. So that by degrees the Bulgarian institutions, literature and everything that made them a nation, vanished. Their very name dropped out of use, and as a people they were abolished. Not till the middle of last century did they make any effort to throw off the Greek Patriarchate yoke and re establish their' own ancient Church. About forty years of petitioning led at last to the Sultan granting the ap pointment of an Exarch by Firman in 1870, and under this Exarch the new Bulgarian Church was established. The people, having got their name back, now began to feel their feet a little, and ventured to kick back at the Turks who had been kicking them for five centuries. The immediate result of this temerity was the descent of troops on the disturbed districts and the massacres of 1876, in which about twenty-five thousand Bulgarians men, women, and children - were done to death. This was a little too much for Europe, and the Powers pro tested. The Sublime Porte, however, refused to listen to them, which so incensed Russia that she declared war. Having thrashed the Turks, she gave them their orders in the treaty of San Stefano (march, by which the Bulgarians were to possess and enjoy practically the whole of Macedonia, with a port on the Mediterranean, and their present Principality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pawns of Liberty: A Story of Fighting Yesterdays in the Balkans A good story should require no preface, and yet a word of explanation may add to the interest of the reader's acquaintance with the lives and characters revealed below. While the writers do not pose as the chroni clers of a true story, they are not narrating the imaginary troubles Of an imagined folk some where southeast Of Vienna. Pawns of Liberty has Macedonia-of - yesterday for its setting, but a good deal of its inspiration comes from the actual history of Bulgaria-of - the-day - before. The Bal kan War, and the revolts of the Bulgar natives in Macedonia which preceded it, only continued the Bulgarian struggle for liberation which made the sixties and seventies of thealast century years of tragic glory in the Balkans. The children of the Bulgarian '76 became the leaders of the Mace donian revolts during the past two decades. For Macedonia and Thrace are inhabited largely by Bulgars, and the revolution was naturally a Bul garian movement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of the Balkans Albania was coveted by Austria and Italy, both members of the Triple Alliance, and to balk their desires, France and Eng land meant to preserve the integrity of the Ottoman Empire, no matter how much blood soaked the soil of Albania, or any other part of the Balkans. The political situation in the Balkans had been the milk, so to speak, on which I had been nourished, and I had had a little too much of it. Know ing already what the practical results of our investigations would be, what interested me personally was the women of Albania; and since, after leaving Albania, we should cross the entire length and breadth of the Balkans, I was to have an opportunity to study the women of Montenegro, Servia. Book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems

Download or read book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems written by Marion I. Newbigin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems: In Their Relation to the Great European War This little book is intended, as its title suggests, to summarize those geographical facts which made the Balkan Peninsula the potential storm-centre Of Europe, for long years before the summer sky' was rent by the lightning - flash which destroyed for ever the Old Europe, and changed in a moment all the familiar fabric of our daily life. The facts herein set forth do not seem to have been previ ously collected and correlated in an English book, and some Of them are not easy of access. At the same time, there can be little doubt that an ao quaintance with them, and with their political and social bearings, is of great importance in forming a judgment on desirable frontier changes in the region. Primarily, indeed, the book was begun with the desire to beguile for one non-combatant the gloom of the Winter of Waiting by the carry ing through of a self-imposed task which gave at least the illusion of usefulness. But it is hoped that this motive was not wholly illusory, and that the book may be found helpful to those who are striving to use their detachment from the actual field of battle to increase that knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia, the Balkans and the Dardanelles What is here written about Poland I pray may stir the chord of sympathy in my reader for that saddened nation. In Belgium I thought I had seen a people draining the very dregs of the cup of misery. I could not conceive a more bitter potion. But the torment of Belgium does not surpass the torture of Poland. Here is a nation suffering the pangs of crucifixion. The Fates pause before writing the destiny of the Balkans. May these peoples receive the light. Download or read book The Inner History of the Balkan War Classic Reprint written by Reginald Rankin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner History of the Balkan War Nothing can exceed the beauty of the rocky ravine through which the northern road winds as it approaches Tirnova. Here and there the slopes are exquisitely green, dotted with forest trees and fragrant hawthorn in other places tall perpendicular crags obtain the mastery, and frown down upon the traveller to the right and left, while feet the foaming waters of the Jantra dash swiftly along, half hidden by the luxuriant foliage, as they carry the melted snows of the Balkans to the broad bosom of the Danube. A sudden turn of the road brings him to the entrance of the town, and it is not without a pang of disgust that he finds himself in a dirty, ill-paved, malodorous street, the closely built houses of which shut out all View of the lovely valley through which the river winds as it almost encircles the ancient city of kings and priests. The town lies on a rocky peninsula, and it is necessary to descend to the banks of the river, or, if possible, to scale the dizzy heights on the Opposite side, in order to appreciate the extreme beauty of its Situation. The houses cluster on the precipice like sea-birds on some ocean crag, the red-tiled roofs rising one above the other in picturesque confusion, here and there relieved with trees and tiny vineyards, which seem literally to hang over the rapid torrent beneath. On the other side of the river one of those serrated ridges of rock so commonly found in this part of Bulgaria, rises in the form of an amphitheatre, almost completely surrounding the town, and crowning a verdant slope which, on the western Side, is clothed with a forest of lofty trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balkan Question: The Present Condition of the Balkans and of European Responsibilities The idea of this volume first arose in consequence of the terrible events of the autumn of 1903, when Macedonia was the scene of one of those wholesale devastations, accompanied by massacre, which are a periodical feature of Near Eastern history. The situation is still one for great concern. The country has been laid waste, and the resources of the insurgents severely strained, while the Turks for the moment are afraid that the Powers, or some of them, might really be moved to act with energy, if they recommend their accustomed work. This has helped to keep the Macedonian Question less prominent than it was some eighteen months ago; and at the same time the more exciting events in the Far East have distracted the attention of Europe even from such significant Symptoms as have not been absent in the Balkans. But the eternal Eastern problem is by no means solved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of the Balkans: Seven Years of a Diplomatist's Life in the Storm Centre of Europe But the blow came from without; the hand of tyranny was raised against a people whose freedom had been bought with their own blood. The World War began in the Balkans, yet its origin was in the hearts of the unscrupulous autocrats whose ruthless ambi tion knew neither justice nor limit; who counted the subjection of a free people merely as the first move in the game to win commercial and political supremacy, and in the end, to dominate the world. Serbia was only a pawn, to be swept aside as the first obstacle in the path of world conquest. This, then, is the story of the Balkanic Nations, from the earliest times, dealing brie y with the many centuries of invasion, oppression and continual fighting for liberty, and dwelling in detail on the heroic struggle in the great cataclysm, when their lands were again coveted as spoils of war. In the narration is revealed intimate and positive knowledge of cause and effect, events and conditions, gained in seven years of constant and close association with rulers and subjects, in the full confidence that is born only of companionship in af iction. In Great Britain there is no one body or one authority that corresponds to the Red Cross Society in those countries. Here there are, as usual, cross-currents in peace and sure confusion in war. The respective spheres of the British Red Cross Society, the Order of St. John, and the are quite undefined, and urgently require definition.
