Book Tropical Veterinary Diseases

Download or read book Tropical Veterinary Diseases written by James A. House and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next century has been characterized by The Economist magazine as a dangerous one, and while it is impossible to completely predict the implications of the myriad changes associated with the new world order on the emergence, transmission and control of tropical diseases, they cannot be ignored. Despite improved technology utilizing diagnostic tests and vaccines, the international movement of live animals and the complexity of food trading patterns is increasing the risk of emerging diseases for both animals and humans. Animal pathogens continue to establish new niches and undergo genetic mutation. This volume speaks to these problems in papers that address issues of world trade and disease control; epidemiology, parasitology and microbiology of emerging diseases; and technology, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, quarantine, and regulatory control and communication as tools of control and prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers from the IVth Biennial Meeting of the Society for Tropical Veterinary Medicine show the importance of molecular tools in epidemiology and explain how these applications define the evolutionary history of organisms and their relationship to other organisms. They look for differences between attenuated vaccine strains and virulent field strains, or from strains from different hosts. They also study the dynamics of disease transmission in a population.

Book Pathogens Crossing Borders

Download or read book Pathogens Crossing Borders written by Cornelia Knab and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing globalization of trade, travel and transport since the mid-19th century had unwelcome consequences – one of them was the spread of contagious animal diseases over greater distances in a shorter time than ever before. Borders and national control strategies proved to be insufficient to stop the pathogens. Not surprisingly, the issue of epizootics (epidemics of animals) was among the first topics to be addressed by international meetings from the 1860s onwards. Pathogens Crossing Borders explores the history of international efforts to contain and prevent the spread of animal diseases from the early 1860s to the years after the Second World War. As an innovative contribution to global history and the history of internationalism, the book investigates how disease experts, politicians and state authorities developed concepts, practices and institutional structures at the international level to tackle the spread of animal diseases across borders. By following their activities in dealing with a problem area which was – and is today – of enormous political, social, public health and economic relevance, the book reveals the historical challenges of finding common international responses to complex and pressing global issues for which there are no easy solutions.
