Book Tropical Maize

Download or read book Tropical Maize written by R. L. Paliwal and published by Fao. This book was released on 2000 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maize is an important crop and the demand for as both food and animal feed is expected to grow by 235 million tonnes between now and 2030. In many countries it will be difficult to increase the area under cultivation, so gains will have to come from increased productivity and intensification of the cropping system. This book looks at all aspects of tropical maize production from physiology, growing environments, pest and diseases, plant breeding and crop management and it is a substantial information resource necessary for the development of the crop.

Book Maize Production Environments Revisited

Download or read book Maize Production Environments Revisited written by A. D. Hartkamp and published by CIMMYT. This book was released on 2001 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents a GIS-based approach for revising the definitions of global maize production environments, called “mega-environments” (MEs), used by CIMMYT and its partners. A cluster analysis was performed on climate data, representing a four-month growing season, for key maize producing locations. Assuming rainfed production, the onset of the growing season was determined based on the month when the ratio of precipitation over potential evapotranspiration exceeds 0.5. Diagnostic criteria for mapping MEs were based on cluster analysis results and expert knowledge. The resulting maps can be used to select appropriate target environments for maize germplasm and trials, as well as in priority setting and site selection for global maize breeding programs.

Book Advances in Genetic Enhancement of Early and Extra Early Maize for Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Advances in Genetic Enhancement of Early and Extra Early Maize for Sub Saharan Africa written by Baffour Badu-Apraku and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the principles and practices of tropical maize improvement with special emphasis on early and extra-early maize to feed the increasing population in Sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights the similarities and differences between results obtained in temperate regions of the world and WCA in terms of corroboration or refutation of genetic principles and theory of maize breeding. The book is expected to be of great interest to maize breeders, advanced undergraduates, graduate students, professors and research scientists in the national and international research institutes all over the world, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. It will also serve as a useful reference for agricultural extension and technology transfer systems, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), seed companies and community-based seed enterprises, policy makers, and all those who are interested in generating wealth from agriculture and alleviating hunger and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement

Download or read book Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement written by Gustavo A Slafer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-09-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improve the quantity and quality of maize crops in any environment! While isolated examples of the physiological bases for genetic improvement of maize yield can be found in several papers (most of which are cited in this book), there has not, until now, been a single volume that delivers and clarifies all of the available information in this field! Today, Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement offers scientists and crop growers a thorough and concise guide to recent literature and developments about increasing the crop efficiency of corn. In Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement, international experts in the field discuss and analyze methods of effectively improving crop breeding and producing better and larger yields of corn. Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement delivers clear, thorough discussions of: improving maize grain yield potential in a cool environment improving maize grain yield potential in the tropics processes affecting maize grain yield potential in temperate conditions maize improvement for drought-limited conditions apical dominance, herbivory resistance, and competitive ability the use of simulation models for crop improvement . . . and much more! With this book, you will find ways to improve maize crops in a variety of countries and climates and understand the importance of kernel numbers and kernel growth to the overall yield. Containing current research and case studies, Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement provides you with vital strategies that will improve the quality and quantity of corn and increase plant functionality and fitness.
