Book excerpt: In 1915, Mr Francis Warren Trist of Harberton, Devon commissioned Culletons Heraldic Office of London to make abstracts of all the wills archived at the Devon Probate Office in Exeter. Twenty-seven years later in 1942, the Probate Office was bombed by the Luftwaffe and nearly all the original wills were destroyed. In the 1950s the Church of the Latter Day Saints (CLDS) acquired the Culletons records and microfilmed them. In 2015, Peter Trist edited 115 Trist wills, 15 Prowse wills and 20 Trist court cases, taken from the CLDS microfilm and donated these to the Devon Heritage Centre. The book explains the provenance of the wills and provides an alphabetical index of over 450 other surnames (apart from Trist & Prowse) mentioned in the wills and court cases. Each will abstract is accompanied by a family chart or tree, identifying the testator. Section 3 of the book supplies a brief bibliography of each Trist individual on the charts. The areas in Devon covered are located mostly in the Dart Valley, the South Hams, South Brent and other southerly villages adjoining Dartmoor.

Book Trist Families of Devon

Download or read book Trist Families of Devon written by Peter J. Trist and published by Peter Trist. This book was released on with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This list contains most of the people surnamed Trist encountered in researching this family history. In the index the Trist family name is omitted to save space but was generally Trist(e) or Tryst(e) which is usually the spelling of the record sources used. Sometimes the record source gave the name Trust(e) and if so I have retained this spelling and typed it after the Christian name. In many cases the Trust entries reflected the Devon pronunciation of Trist and there is often evidence that the surname was misspelt (e.g. in Chart 5/574, at the baptism of Ambrose Trust whose father is known to have been Ambrose Trist). He was orphaned and later migrated to New Zealand where his descendants continue to use the surname Trust. Sometimes in earlier documents both spellings are used interchangeably in the same document. However, where a source used Trust I have retained that spelling because in a minority of cases (particularly in the nineteenth century) it passed into use as the surname Trust.
