Download or read book Chronicling the Days written by Linda M. Morra and published by Guernica Editions. This book was released on 2021-04 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Death epidemic spawned Boccaccio's Decameron; the bubonic plague brought us A Journal of the Plague Year. Many other great literary works have centered around storytelling at the time of a pandemic. Of people quarantined in their homes in 1722, Daniel Defoe wrote: It was generally in such houses that we heard the most dismal shrieks and outcries of the poor people, terrified and even frighted to death by the sight of the condition of their dearest relations, and by the terror of being imprisoned as they were. In March of 2020, a new virus in the shape of a crown forced Montrealers and people worldwide to be locked in their homes in fear of contagion. Social distancing, self-isolation, and quarantine became the new buzzwords dominating everyday vocabulary. In April, once this new reality set in, the Quebec Writers' Federation asked its members, What's the story of your day?" It initiated a project, Chronicling the Days, inviting writers to detail a typical day in their life. The aim was to provide writers with a forum to put their creative thoughts to paper to try to make sense of the surreal situation and find some connection with other writers. "Every story valid," the guidelines stated. One hundred writers responded to the challenge. In the words of Rachel McCrum, who curated the series, "There have been stories of people facing homeschooling and the challenges of suddenly having children at home all day; there have been worries over stockpiling, access to supplies, and the wearing of masks. There have been health scares. There have been love stories, and there has been grief. There has been isolation and loneliness, and there have been families coming together. There have been intimate glimpses into domestic lives. There have been closed cafés and quiet streets. There have been racist incidents. There has been anxiety and fear and generosity and courage. There have been quite a few stories of writers reflecting that staying at home and not seeing many people isn't that unusual for them. There has been a story from an ICU nurse. There have been stories of cats. There has been community." True to its slogan of "No Borders, No Limits," Guernica Editions is collaborating with the Quebec Writers' Federation to publish these essays in an anthology in the spring of 2021. These 100 essays are interspersed by six longer ones, also on the topic of the pandemic, but written for the QWF Writes series. Most submissions are by professional authors, members of the QWF; for some, however, this anthology represents their first time in print. Dispatches from a Pandemic -- Chronicling the Days provides an intimate panorama of the early days and experiences of the coronavirus. Constituting a rich mosaic of different styles, forms, and voices, this anthology provides a moving account of the everyday life of Quebec writers in isolation, digging deeply into their souls and reaching out to others.

Magali’s presence jars open the door to a long-forgotten love affair in Nelly’s past, and forces Piers to do to battle with yearnings he has carefully smothered under a monkish routine. Drawn outside the claustrophobic confines of rue des Griffons, he finds himself dangerously entangled in the crosscurrents of desire, swept up by the lives of three compelling women. Book excerpt: "Told in a cinematic, darkly humorous, present tense, The Transaction leads De Angelis to a small town perched somewhere in Sicily's hinterland to negotiate a straightforward real estate deal. While en route, however, the train he is on breaks down. Unable to reach his local go-between, he must spend the night in a squalid whistle stop. What follows is a tangled series of unsettling events, involving child prostitution and brazen killings, that thrust him at the centre of a murky mafia plot. Alone in a hostile village, he stumbles into a cast of despicable characters intent on preventing the ill-fated property from being sold. But De Angelis refuses to leave town. As he erratically obsesses on piecing together what went wrong with his transaction, he crosses path with Marinella, an alluring eleven-year-old girl with luscious chestnut hip-long hair, softly cascading along slender contours. The inciting chance encounter traps him in a psychological and moral cul-de-sac that leaves him with no choice but to confront the type of man he really is."--

Download or read book Unarrested Archives written by Linda M. Morra and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calling upon the archives of Canadian writers E. Pauline Johnson (1861–1913), Emily Carr (1871–1945), Sheila Watson (1909–1998), Jane Rule (1931–2007), and M. NourbeSe Philip (1947– ), Linda M. Morra explores the ways in which women’s archives have been uniquely conceptualized in scholarly discourses and shaped by socio-political forces. She also provides a framework for understanding the creative interventions these women staged to protect their records. Through these case studies, Morra traces the influence of institutions such as national archives and libraries, and regulatory bodies such as border service agencies on the creation, presentation, and preservation of women's archival collections. The deliberate selection of the five literary case studies allows Morra to examine changing archival practices over time, shifting definitions of nationhood and national literary history, varying treatments of race, gender, and sexual orientation, and the ways in which these forces affected the writers’ reputations and their archives. Morra also productively reflects on Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever and postmodern feminist scholarship related to the relationship between writing, authority, and identity to showcase the ways in which female writers in Canada have represented themselves and their careers in the public record.

For the first time, most of the two-, three-, four-, and five-word entries found in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary have been given their own place in this volume's lists of rhyming words."--Preface.

Book The Midwife of Torment and Other Stories

Download or read book The Midwife of Torment and Other Stories written by Paulo Da Costa and published by Essential Prose. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Midwife of Torment and Other Stories is a collection of sudden fiction that compresses its narrative to deliver a variety of stories that alternate the flavour of a philosophical reflection with the whimsical enchantment of a fable with a twist. These stories also often dwell on the strange and the horror found in our mundane lives. Stories that, on occasion, also leap as far as speculative fiction or swirl in a lyrical exploration of prose narratives. Midwife of Torment and Other Stories explores human and non-human voices through narrative weighing at less than one thousand words, and the vast majority weighing at less than five hundred. The characters emerge from worlds of human domesticity and community interaction as well as from the natural world, lending voice to experiences that, at times, occur outside the accepted norms of consensual reality."--
