Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions by nine scholars on two broad themes: the analysis of Johann Sebastian Bach?s orchestral works, especially his concertos, and the interpretation and performance of his music in general. The contributors are a diverse group, active in the fields of performance, organology, music theory, and music history. Several work in more than one of these areas, making them particularly well prepared to write on the interdisciplinary themes of the volume. ø Part 1 includes Alfred Mann?s introduction to Bach?s orchestral music as well as essays by Gregory G. Butler and Jeanne Swack on the Brandenburg Concertos. Part 2 offers ground-breaking articles by John Koster and Mary Oleskiewicz on the harpsichords and flutes of Bach?s day as well as essays by David Schulenberg and William Renwick on keyboard performance practice and the study of fugue in Bach?s circle. Paul Walker explores the relationships between rhetoric and fugue, and John Butt reviews some recent trends in Bach performance.

  • Author : Hugh Evans
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2014-10-28
  • ISBN : 1783065494
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book The Amateur Flautist written by Hugh Evans and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people learn the flute. Most give it up as an adult because they cannot easily find anyone to play with, and a lack of practice makes it less enjoyable to play. This book is aimed at helping such people. The first chapter diagnoses why most amateur flautists give up playing, and sets out a number of remedies. The most important is finding other musicians with whom to play, whether in an orchestra, or more importantly, in chamber groups. The author explores how you might set about finding players for chamber music, and how you might set about finding the music itself. The second chapter gives guidance about the music for all the principal combinations of chamber groups which involve the flute. The most significant ones are flute and piano, two to four flutes, trio sonatas with another melody instrument and piano, and the wind quartet. The author describes the principal works for each of these groups, which are fun and manageable for amateurs, rather than listing everything that is available. Listed are the significant works that are available for free on the internet. The third chapter suggests a short practice regime to counteract the deficiencies in the playing of most amateur flautists, which are poor tone and tuning. Practicing half an hour a few times a week should do the trick.

Book Baroque Woodwind Instruments

Download or read book Baroque Woodwind Instruments written by Paul Carroll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late 17th century through to the end of the 18th century saw rapid progress in the development of woodwind instruments and the composition of a vast body of music for those instruments. During this period a large amount of music for domestic consumption was written for a growing amateur market, a market which has regrown in the latter part of the 20th century. The last 30 years has also seen the standard of performance by professionals on these instruments rise enormously. This book provides a guide to the history of the four main woodwind instruments of the Baroque, the flute, oboe, recorder and bassoon, and this is complemented by a repertoire list for each instrument. It also guides those interested towards a basic technique for playing these instruments - a certain level of musical literacy is assumed - and it can be used by students, professionals and amateurs. Advice is also given on buying a suitable reproduction instrument from a market where now virtually any Baroque instrument can be obtained as a faithful copy. This is the first book of its kind and has its origins in the wind tutors of the 18th century.

Book Georg Philipp Telemann

Download or read book Georg Philipp Telemann written by Richard Petzoldt and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For contemporaries Telemann was the leading German composer, and a leader on the European musical scene. His fantastic energy, keen business sense, and industry ensured a steady output during an active career of over sixty years. A friend of Handel and J.S. Bach, and esteemed by both, he was a more than likable character: versatile, resourceful, witty, and disarmingly self-assertive. In describing Telemann's life and career, especially in Leipzig, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, Professor Petzoldt explains the musician's status in eighteenth-century society and shows how Telemann, by dint of his gifts and prestige, rose above dependence. After his death Telemann's star waned, while Bach's rose. The author's examination of Telemann's reputation and styles emphasizes that we must try to understand eighteenth-century attitudes before we make hasty judgments and dismiss as second-rate a composer so lauded in his day. The detailed analysis of Telemann's music includes his orchestral works, chamber and instrumental music, Lieder, oratorios and Passions, cantatas, and opera. It also includes comparison with the works of such contemporaries as Handel, Bach, Keiser, Mattheson, and Carl Heinrich Graun. The account of the Hamburg opera shows Telemann as a prime mover in the development of a specifically German opera.
