Download or read book My Colonial Service Vol 1 of 2 written by G. William des Voeux and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Colonial Service, Vol. 1 of 2: In British Guiana, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Fiji, Australia, Newfoundland, and Hong Kong With Interludes I have, moreover, been faced with this difficulty. Many of the incidents of my official life have been not altogether to the credit of those who had part in them; and as they occurred, none of them less than twelve, and some nearly forty years ago, a considerable number of these persons are no longer living. A strict adherence to the nil nisi bonum principle would thus cause the omission of some of my principal difficulties; but in order to create as little heart-burning as possible from the revived memory of events for the most part forgotten, I have substituted letters, which are not the proper initials, for the names of those, whether alive or dead, of whom circumstances are related likely to be regarded as not altogether to their credit. Though I am aware that the persons indicated will be recognised by some, yet by this expedient they need not be known beyond a comparatively narrow circle which is already acquainted with most of the doings as herein recorded. Book Hand Book of British Guiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hand Book of British Guiana Classic Reprint written by James Rodway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of British Guiana The soil of the coast consists of a mixture of clay and mud of considerable depth and almost unequalled richness. Alterna tion of the crops is unknown, sugar-canes growing year after year in the same soil with hardly any deterioration. To increase the production, however, most of the plantations use chemical ma nures, and especially lime, which latter is almost wanting nat urally. With such a soil and heavy rainfall, it follows that crops are also heavy, while almost every tropical production can be grown to perfection. Nothing can exceed the luxuriance of the vegetation, weeds of course coming to the front and chok ing the cultivated plants if not kept under control. Plantains, Indian corn, yams, sweet potatoes, and a host of fruits ripen all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Question of Labour

Book excerpt: When Emancipation finally came in the 1830s, white Caribbean plantation owners first sought to replace slaves with immigrant labour from India. Most of these efforts were unsuccessful, except in Trinidad and Guyana (formerly British Guiana), where an enduring pattern of immigration built up. This text begins with the 1870s, when immigration laws for both countries were substantially revised in response to the success of the indenture drive in Asia, and explores the history of indentured immigration from that period up until 1917.
