Book The Divine Cities Trilogy

Download or read book The Divine Cities Trilogy written by Robert Jackson Bennett and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 1424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A special omnibus edition, collecting all three books of Robert Jackson Bennett’s acclaimed Divine Cities trilogy in a single volume. In a world where terrifying, capricious gods once walked the earth, enslaving and brutalizing millions, three unforgettable protagonists struggle to come to terms with the mysteries these divinities left behind— and to make sure these cruel masters do not rise again. In City of Stairs, an unassuming young woman named Shara Thivani arrives in Bulikov, the city that once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world. Officially, she is just another junior diplomat, dispatched by the city’s new colonial masters; unofficially, she is one of her country’s most accomplished spies, on a mission to solve a murder. As she pursues the killer, she begins to suspect that the gods who once guarded Bulikov are not as dead as they seem, and that the city’s cruel reign may begin anew. In City of Blades, General Turin Mulaghesh—foul-mouthed hero of the battle of Bulikov, rumored war criminal, ally of an embattled prime minister—is pressed into service one last time, investigating a terrifying discovery in the city of Voortyashtan, once the stronghold of the god of war and death. Voortyashtan’s god is most certainly dead, but something is awakening in the city. And someone is determined to make the world tremble at the city’s awful power once again. In City of Miracles, the formidable, seemingly unkillable Sigrud je Harkvaldsson returns from self-imposed exile on a mission of revenge, only to find himself embroiled in a battle that may be beyond even his abilities to win—a secret, decades-long war that will force him to confront the last mysteries of Bulikov, the city of miracles itself.

Book Atopological Trilogy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zafer Aracagök
  • Publisher : punctum books
  • Release : 2015-03-14
  • ISBN : 0692403728
  • Pages : 93 pages

Download or read book Atopological Trilogy written by Zafer Aracagök and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2015-03-14 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atopological Trilogy creates new concepts for Deleuze-Guattarian thought without any heed for sectarian, sermonising, or dutiful readings of the philosophers. In Part I of the trilogy, "Becoming-Sexual of the Sexual," Aracagök demonstrates the ways in which quantum theory and the concept of "complementarity" inform Deleuze and Guattari's thought, especially in relation to "becoming" in general and "becoming-woman" and "becoming-queer" more particularly. Aracagök argues that the ways in which the philosophers put forward a ban on "becoming-man" with a certain degree of undecidability encapsulates (albeit in a cryptic form) other becomings, the most important of which is becoming-queer, or rather, the becoming-sexual of the sexual. In Part II: "Deleuze on Sound, Music, and Schizo-Incest," Aracagök puts into resonance the sound, noise, and music (and the question) of schizo-incest with the intention of deterritorialising a notion of the meta-audible. If Kafka's story, "The Investigations of a Dog" leads us to a realm of the "formless" which cannot be heard without destroying what we know as "hearing," it also offers us a limit-experience of the meta-audible, which, when radicalised via the notions of "schizo-incest" and "self-shattering," creates a line of flight that escapes even from the line of flight itself. All these maneuvers pose a serious challenge to Deleuze and Guattari, who claim that despite all his investigations, Kafka's investigator dog is re-Oedipalised in the end. Proposing in the end a limit experience which Aracagök calls the "meta-audible," he shows that Kafka's more radical approach to sound creates a line of flight that escapes even from the line of flight itself. The final essay of the trilogy, "Clinical and Critical Perversion," begins with the 19th-century crisis of an abyss presumed to be yawning between mimesis and diegesis ever since Plato. According to Aracagök, this takes the form of a crisis of the "political," the repression of which becomes the mission of psychoanalytical discourse towards the end of the 19th century. This crisis finds another form of expression in George Büchner's unfinished 1836 novella Lenz, relative to the audibility of a "terrible voice which is usually called silence." If the disappearance of the "political" is related to the rise of psychoanalysis on the protocols of, first, hypnosis, and then, the "talking cure," both of which privilege the presumed form of the voice of the analyst over the analysand's silence (a psycho-politics?), Aracagök proposes re-distributing this process, calling renewed attention to the clinicalisation of perversion, along Deleuzian-Guattarian distinctions such as: surface and depth, critical and clinical, oedipal-incest and schizo-incest, leading to a re-evaluation of what Deleuze and Guattari might have meant by "homosexual-effusion" in their book Kafka: Toward a Minor Literature, all in order to deterritorialise the "political" under a new concept - namely, critical perversion. Ultimately, Atopological Trilogy offers the reader no safe grounds for preserving not only a philosophical identity but also not any identity, if only to be able to let you float in the air without any guidance à la Kafka's "Red Indian."

Book The Electric Meme

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Aunger
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2013-07-30
  • ISBN : 1476740569
  • Pages : 479 pages

Download or read book The Electric Meme written by Robert Aunger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From biology to culture to the new new economy, the buzzword on everyone's lips is "meme." How do animals learn things? How does human culture evolve? How does viral marketing work? The answer to these disparate questions and even to what is the nature of thought itself is, simply, the meme. For decades researchers have been convinced that memes were The Next Big Thing for the understanding of society and ourselves. But no one has so far been able to define what they are. Until now. Here, for the first time, Robert Aunger outlines what a meme physically is, how memes originated, how they developed, and how they have made our brains into their survival systems. They are thoughts. They are parasites. They are in control. A meme is a distinct pattern of electrical charges in a node in our brains that reproduces a thousand times faster than a bacterium. Memes have found ways to leap from one brain to another. A number of them are being replicated in your brain as you read this paragraph. In 1976 the biologist Richard Dawkins suggested that all animals -- including humans -- are puppets and that genes hold the strings. That is, we are robots serving as life support for the genes that control us. And all they want to do is replicate themselves. But then, we do lots of things that don't seem to help genes replicate. We decide not to have children, we waste our time doing dangerous things like mountain climbing, or boring things like reading, or stupid things like smoking that don't seem to help genes get copied into the next generation. We do all sorts of cultural things for reasons that don't seem to have anything to do with genes. Fashions in sports, books, clothes, ideas, politics, lifestyles come and go and give our lives meaning, so how can we be gene robots? Dawkins recognized that something else was going on. We communicate with one another and we get ideas, and these ideas seem to have a life of their own. Maybe there was something called memes that were like thought genes. Maybe our bodies were gene robots and our minds were meme robots. That would mean that what we think is not the result of our own creativity, but rather the result of the evolutionary flow of memes as they wash through us. What is the biological reality of an idea with a life of its own? What is a thought gene? It's a meme. And no one before Robert Aunger has established what it physically must be. This elegant, paradigm-shifting analysis identifies how memes replicate in our brains, how they evolved, and how they use artifacts like books and photographs and advertisements to get from one brain to another. Destined to inflame arguments about free will, open doors to new ways of sharing our thoughts, and provide a revolutionary explanation of consciousness, The Electric Meme will change the way each of us thinks about our minds, our cultures, and our daily choices.

BOOK I: DEMONS & ANGELS Dark thoughts feed our demons... A week ago Paul didn't even believe in demons. Now he sees them everywhere. They ride around on heavy human shoulders, whispering hateful silence to their hosts. In the wake of a tragic accident, Paul finds it hard to take the demons seriously. He is too caught up in mourning the loss of his best friend Kris. Whatever responsibility that comes with seeing demons is of no interest to him. Paul just wants his life back. Except Kris is haunting Paul. The demons are starting to notice him watching them. Also, he seems to have developed some pretty incredible abilities beyond seeing demons. A new life needs to take shape if Paul wishes to survive, but the cost may be his old life falling apart. BOOK II: RISE OF THE WALKER KING The Walking Between Worlds story continues... The way of the demon hunter is finally beginning to make sense to Paul, as is the art of walking between worlds. He is forced to shoulder the heavy burden of leading this mighty army of immortals if they are to continue their vital secret work. Just when he needs her most, his love has been torn from his grasp. Rather than turn to his trusted Guide and best friend in his time of need, Paul turns away from him. Kris is left to wonder if the fire burning inside the new king will drive him to victory or madness War takes the army to Hell, and pits their forces against a sea of displaced demons. Lines are crossed, lives are lost, and the battles take heavy tolls on both sides. A champion emerges to lead them, and to search for their lost king. His new student sees the timeless art of dealing with demons in an astonishingly unique way; it makes William question everything he is supposed to be teaching the warrior apprentice, while battling day and night to save the way of the Walker. Ruling from their lofty perches, the angels have long since lost their way. They want control of everything, and will stop at nothing to get it. Barely an army, the remaining demon hunters dodge plots from above and fire from below in their hopes to secretly save the worlds they walk between once more. The dragons that reign in Hell have grown more brutal over long centuries; when one queen fell, a more fearsome dragon took her place. It will take more than one miracle to stop her from setting all the worlds aflame forever.
