Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Spherical trigonometry was at the heart of astronomy and ocean-going navigation for two millennia. The discipline was a mainstay of mathematics education for centuries, and it was a standard subject in high schools until the 1950s. Today, however, it is rarely taught. Heavenly Mathematics traces the rich history of this forgotten art, revealing how the cultures of classical Greece, medieval Islam, and the modern West used spherical trigonometry to chart the heavens and the Earth."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry with Trigonometry Second Edition is a second course in plane Euclidean geometry, second in the sense that many of its basic concepts will have been dealt with at school, less precisely. It gets underway with a large section of pure geometry in Chapters 2 to 5 inclusive, in which many familiar results are efficiently proved, although the logical frame work is not traditional. In Chapter 6 there is a convenient introduction of coordinate geometry in which the only use of angles is to handle the perpendicularity or parallelism of lines. Cartesian equations and parametric equations of a line are developed and there are several applications. In Chapter 7 basic properties of circles are developed, the mid-line of an angle-support, and sensed distances. In the short Chaper 8 there is a treatment of translations, axial symmetries and more generally isometries. In Chapter 9 trigonometry is dealt with in an original way which e.g. allows concepts such as clockwise and anticlockwise to be handled in a way which is not purely visual. By the stage of Chapter 9 we have a context in which calculus can be developed. In Chapter 10 the use of complex numbers as coordinates is introduced and the great conveniences this notation allows are systematically exploited. Many and varied topics are dealt with , including sensed angles, sensed area of a triangle, angles between lines as opposed to angles between co-initial half-lines (duo-angles). In Chapter 11 various convenient methods of proving geometrical results are established, position vectors, areal coordinates, an original concept mobile coordinates. In Chapter 12 trigonometric functions in the context of calculus are treated. New to this edition: - The second edition has been comprehensively revised over three years - Errors have been corrected and some proofs marginally improved - The substantial difference is that Chapter 11 has been significantly extended, particularly the role of mobile coordinates, and a more thorough account of the material is given - Provides a modern and coherent exposition of geometry with trigonometry for many audiences across mathematics - Provides many geometric diagrams for a clear understanding of the text and includes problem exercises for many chapters - Generalizations of this material, such as to solid euclidean geometry and conic sections, when combined with calculus, would lead to applications in science, engineering, and elsewhere

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exposition of the theoretical foundations of hyperbolic manifolds. It is intended to be used both as a textbook and as a reference. Particular emphasis has been placed on readability and completeness of ar gument. The treatment of the material is for the most part elementary and self-contained. The reader is assumed to have a basic knowledge of algebra and topology at the first-year graduate level of an American university. The book is divided into three parts. The first part, consisting of Chap ters 1-7, is concerned with hyperbolic geometry and basic properties of discrete groups of isometries of hyperbolic space. The main results are the existence theorem for discrete reflection groups, the Bieberbach theorems, and Selberg's lemma. The second part, consisting of Chapters 8-12, is de voted to the theory of hyperbolic manifolds. The main results are Mostow's rigidity theorem and the determination of the structure of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds. The third part, consisting of Chapter 13, in tegrates the first two parts in a development of the theory of hyperbolic orbifolds. The main results are the construction of the universal orbifold covering space and Poincare's fundamental polyhedron theorem.

Book excerpt: Rooted in ancient astronomy, trigonometry is mathematics' powerful toolkit for scientific measurement. It has been at the heart of the study of infinity, complex and imaginary numbers, and the shape of the space itself. Our experience of the universe has been made possible, and deeply challenged, by this surprisingly deep and fruitful subject.
Download or read book Trigonometry written by Glen Van Brummelen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of the desire to understand the workings of motions of the heavenly bodies, trigonometry gave the ancient Greeks the ability to predict their futures. Most of what we see of the subject in school comes from these heavenly origins; 15th century astronomer Regiomontanus called it "the foot of the ladder to the stars". In this Very Short Introduction Glen Van Brummelen shows how trigonometry connects mathematics to science, and has today become an indispensable tool in predicting cyclic patterns like animal populations and ocean tides. Its historical journey through major cultures such as medieval India and the Islamic World has taken it through disciplines such as geography and even religious practice. Trigonometry has also been a major player in the most startling mathematical developments of the modern world. Its interactions with the concept of infinity led to Taylor and Fourier series, some of the most practical tools of modern science. The birth of complex numbers led to a shocking union of exponential and trigonometric functions, creating the most beautiful formulas and powerful modelling tools in science. Finally, as Van Brummelen shows, trigonometry allows us to explore the strange new worlds of non-Euclidean geometries, opening up bizarre possibilities for the shape of space itself. And indeed, one of those new geometries - spherical - takes us full circle back to ancient Greek astronomers and European navigators, who first used it to chart their ways across the heavens and the earth. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Download or read book A Participatory Approach To Modern Geometry written by Jay Kappraff and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to make the subject of geometry and its applications easy and comfortable to understand by students majoring in mathematics or the liberal arts, architecture and design. It can be used to teach students at different levels of computational ability and there is also sufficient novel material to interest students at a higher cognitive level. While the book goes deeply into the applications of geometry, it contains much introductory material which up to now may not have been known to the student. The constructive approach using compass and straightedge engages students, not just on an intellectual level, but also at a tactile level. This may be the only rigorous book offering geometry that attempts to engage students outside of the mathematics discipline.

Download or read book Exact Values in Trigonometry written by Bhava Nath Dahal and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since last 2500 years, respectful mathematicians worked for trigonometric values differently. The determined 6-major and further 10 less-common trigonometric ratios. Many modern mathematicians worked for EXACT values too. In this book, there are five methods for determination of trigonometric ratios. One, named as Vatsa-method is ratio-based. It discovered new sum of natural number theory of 'vatsa'. Remaining four methods are based on chord (a) and supplementary chords (b) or their product (ab). We can find EXACT trigonometric values for all integer angles and polygons; for the remaining concept of 'appropriate accuracy' adopted herewith. For example, square root of 3 is irrational. Therefore, so-called exact value of Sine based on square root 3 is not exact, rather with 'appropriate accuracy' for the user. Same concept has used for 'appropriate accuracy'. In this book, trigonometric ratios are determined under: 1. Arc-Line method (1/2 to 1 hour to study or teaching) 2. Series method (1 hour to study or teaching) 3. Angle-Rewritten method (1 hour to study or teaching) 4. Precise-Rewritten method (1/2 to 1 hour to study or teaching) 5. Vatsa method (1 hour to study or teaching) This book developed new method for trigonometric values with basis of 'square root of 2' only.

Speed math refers to faster methods and techniques to solve arithmetic calculation mentally. It saves considerable amount of time in competitive exam. So it is worthy to study speed math. In order to compute given calculation mentally, one need to recall right kind of specific method (shortcut) out of 1000's. Instead of doing so, i) Is it possible to compute any arithmetic operation (like addition, multiplication) quickly by using scientific approach ? ii) Is it possible to derive all methods in speed math by using unique principle ? iii) Is there any unique secret (principle) behind speed mathematics ? After researching speed math about 2-3 years, I realized that there is unique secret (principle) behind speed mathematics !! This book explains entire speed mathematics by using single principle and gives introduction to new number system called as global number system. It extends VM framework in some of the area like divisibility, n'th root.
