Book James Dean Transfigured

Download or read book James Dean Transfigured written by Claudia Springer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of James Dean in 1955, the figure of the teen rebel permeated the globe, and its presence is still felt in the twenty-first century. Rebel iconography—which does not have to resemble James Dean himself, but merely incorporates his disaffected attitude—has become an advertising mainstay used to sell an array of merchandise and messages. Despite being overused in advertisements, it still has the power to surprise when used by authors and filmmakers in innovative and provocative ways. The rebel figure has mass appeal precisely because of its ambiguities; it can mean anything to anyone. The global appropriation of rebel iconography has invested it with fresh meanings. Author Claudia Springer succeeds here in analyzing both ends of the spectrum—the rebel icon as a tool in upholding capitalism's cycle of consumption, and as a challenge to that cycle and its accompanying beliefs. In this groundbreaking study of rebel iconography in international popular culture, Springer studies a variety of texts from the United States and abroad that use this imagery in contrasting and thought-provoking ways. Using a cultural studies approach, she analyzes films, fiction, poems, Web sites, and advertisements to determine the extent to which the icon's adaptations have been effective as a response to the actual social problems affecting contemporary adolescents around the world.

Book excerpt: Imagine experiencing life not as the gender dictated by birth but as one of your own design. In Trans Figured, Brian Belovitch shares his true story of life as a gender outlier and his dramatic journey through the jungle of gender identity. Brian has the rare distinction of coming out three times: first as a queer teenager; second as a glamorous transgender woman named Tish, and later, Natalia Gervais; and finally as an HIV-positive gay man surviving the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. From growing up in a barely-working-class first-generation immigrant family in Fall River, Massachusetts, to spinning across the disco dance floor of Studio 54 in New York City . . . from falling into military lock-step as the Army wife of a domineering GI in Germany to having a brush with fame as Natalia, high-flying downtown darling of the boozy and druggy pre-Giuliani New York nightclub scene, Brian escaped many near-death experiences. Trans Figured chronicles a life lived on the edge with an unforgettable cast of characters during a dangerous and chaotic era. Rich with drama and excitement, this no-holds-barred memoir tells it all. Most importantly, Brian's candid and poignant story of recovery shines a light on the perseverance of the human spirit.

Download or read book Transfigured written by Charlie Shamp and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians are crawling through their lives completely beat up by the enemy and although they have been translated out of darkness into light the enemy has convinced them that in salvation nothing has changed. Their circumstances in life have crippled them from moving forward with their eternal calling and internal strife of battling the old into the new has left them powerless to work the works of God. As Christ-like ones we have been called to live a transcended life, to live from above and not from beneath, to manifest light in the midst of darkness. The Lord is pouring out His spirit across the world and raising up those who are willing to walk in the realms of glory without fear. History reveals to us believers that moved supernaturally across time, space and multi-dimensions to change their generation. They transversed the Earth and the Heavens for the purposes of God. Pioneering the unseen to give us a glimpse of what it looks like to walk in God. From Enoch to Paul, we have many examples of Saints that transcended what is seen as normal, they lived in the realm where the impossible became possible. They were those that show us our heritage and our inheritance as believers in Christ. They rose out of the limitations of their earthly genealogy to engage a heavenly genealogy in Christ. It is the Lord's intention for spiritual manifestations to become the normal Christian experience for all. Be challenged, as you read this book, to the very core of your being as the Lord takes you on a spiritual journey to his throne and some of the most beautiful places in the spirit. In Transfigured, Charlie will help you to understand the spiritual realms and guide you on how to see and know God; not when you die, but you will discover what it truly means to be a new creation in Christ now.

Download or read book The Transfigured Kingdom written by Ernest A. Zitser and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly comparative analysis of late Muscovite and early Imperial court culture, Ernest A. Zitser provides a corrective to the secular bias of the scholarly literature about the reforms of Peter the Great. Zitser demonstrates that the tsar's supposedly "secularizing" reforms rested on a fundamentally religious conception of his personal political mission. In particular, Zitser shows that the carnivalesque (and often obscene) activities of the so-called Most Comical All-Drunken Council served as a type of Baroque political sacrament—a monarchical rite of power that elevated the tsar's person above normal men, guaranteed his prerogative over church affairs, and bound the participants into a community of believers in his God-given authority ("charisma"). The author suggests that by implicating Peter's "royal priesthood" in taboo-breaking, libertine ceremonies, the organizers of such "sacred parodies" inducted select members of the Russian political elite into a new system of distinctions between nobility and baseness, sacrality and profanity, tradition and modernity. Tracing the ways in which the tsar and his courtiers appropriated aspects of Muscovite and European traditions to suit their needs and aspirations, The Transfigured Kingdom offers one of the first discussions of the gendered nature of political power at the court of Russia's self-proclaimed "Father of the Fatherland" and reveals the role of symbolism, myth, and ritual in shaping political order in early modern Europe.

Book Atom Smashing Power of Mind

Download or read book Atom Smashing Power of Mind written by Charles Fillmore and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great many passages in this book testify to Charles Fillmore's persistent interest in what is popularly called atomic energy and the promise held out by its development of a better world for mankind. From another standpoint Charles Fillmore's mind was simply fascinated by the idea of the atom, this infinitesimal particle of substance, and the enormous energy locked up in it. At times he thought of it as the most perfect representation in the manifest world of that divine mental or spiritual energy which pervades all things and which, when properly expressed through the minds of His children, serves so greatly to glorify God. At other times he thought of it as the very essence of this mental or spiritual energy, Spirit-mind itself! The reader will find each one of these standpoints set forth over and over--perhaps vaguely and mystically at times--but ever testifying to the alertness and vitality of Charles Fillmore's mind and his unflagging interest in everything in his world._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Atomic Age_x000D_ The Restorative Power of the Spirit_x000D_ Spiritual Obedience_x000D_ I AM or Superconsciousness_x000D_ The Day of Judgment_x000D_ Thou Shalt Decree a Thing_x000D_ Thinking in the Fourth Dimension_x000D_ Is This God's World?_x000D_ Demonstrating Christ Thought by Thought_x000D_ Truth Radiates Light_x000D_ The Only Mind_x000D_ Contact with the Christ Mind_x000D_ Metaphysics of Shakespeare_x000D_ The Body_x000D_ Faith Precipitations_x000D_ The Seed Is the Word_x000D_ The Resurrecting Power of the Word_x000D_ Transfiguration_x000D_ The End of the Age

Book God Doesn t Make Mistakes

  • Author : Laurie Scott
  • Publisher : Laurie S Scott
  • Release : 2018-08-26
  • ISBN : 9781732327603

Download or read book God Doesn t Make Mistakes written by Laurie Scott and published by Laurie S Scott. This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do if you are an evangelical Christian, politically conservative AND transgender? Evangelical Christians are often attacked by the Left. People who are transgender are often attacked by the Right. It's human nature to align with those who share our world view, and dismiss those who don't. There is a struggle going on in our culture that produces more victims than champions--we all seem to agree on that. The growing divide between the political, ideological Left vs Right and Religious vs Secularist is so sharp that even attempting to bridge the gap is a perilous endeavor. But what happens to the people who are scorned by both sides? Shut out by the Left for their conservative views. Rejected by Christians for being transgender. Meet Laurie Suzanne Scott. She is, indeed, both an evangelical Christian and transgender. Raised in a devoutly Christian home, she endured the unbelievably difficult and complicated odyssey of finding her identity as a woman ...without losing her identity in Christ. A journey she barely survived. In "God Doesn't Make Mistakes: Confessions of a Transgender Christian" Laurie tells her story of growing up playing a role as unnatural to her as the body she was born with. She was a living, breathing dichotomy... and there was no one who could understand. She had no choice but to keep up the pretense and keep it a secret. She became a good son. A good Christian. And eventually even a good husband. She knew if her true identity became known, she would lose everything. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. So, she kept her secret from everyone. But she knew there was no keeping it from God. Raised with a doctrine she believed condemned her, she decided the only way out of her constant misery was to end her life. "Who would even want to stop me?" "Wouldn't it be easier for everyone this way?" It was at that desperate crossroad she heard the voice of God simply say, "You're okay." Since that day, God has led her on a path to heal her deep wounds of rejection by family as well as other Christians, and make peace with the way she was created. "I thought God would be the first to reject me. But, in fact, He was the first to accept me." Now Laurie reaches out to Christians who are transgender, who are still struggling to believe God loves them for who they are... just as they are. It's a difficult and often emotionally exhausting ministry. Equally important are the efforts to help the Church see their Christian brothers and sisters who are transgender as simply, their Christian brothers and sisters. Nothing more, and nothing less. And finally, she shares the much needed message that God doesn't make mistakes, and it IS possible to be a conservative, a Christian, and transgender.

Book excerpt: Clément's Transfiguring Time is an early work, written when he was 37. It carries all the excitement of his fresh encounter with Orthodoxy and the Fathers of the Christian Church. He draws on his deep study of Hinduism, Buddhism and Indian myths to differentiate the understanding of time and eternity in archaic religions, in Hinduism and in Buddhism, from the Christian and specifically Orthodox understanding of time and eternity. This new translation – the first one in English - wants to bring Clément's early work to a new generation of readers.
