This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Journal of Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements (CMEM) provides the scientific community with a forum to present the interaction between the complementary aspects of computational methods and experimental measurements, and to stress the importance of their harmonious development and integration. The steady progress in the efficiency of computers and software has resulted in the continuous development of computer simulation, which has influenced all scientific and engineering activities. As these simulations expand and improve, the need to validate them grows, and this can only be successfully achieved by performing dedicated experimental tests. Furthermore, because of their continual development, experimental techniques are becoming so complex and sophisticated that they need to be controlled by computers, with the data obtained processed by means of computational methods. The aim of the Journal is to review the latest work in computational methods and experimental measurements, with a view to achieving harmonious development and interaction between the two.

Book Spiritual Radical

Download or read book Spiritual Radical written by Edward K. Kaplan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book explores the relationship between time and history and shows how an appreciation of long-term time helps to make sense of the past. For the historian, time is not an unproblematic given but, as for the physicist or the philosopher, a means to understanding the changing patterns of life on earth. The book is devoted to a wide-ranging analysis of the way different societies have conceived and interpreted time, and it develops a theory of threefold roles of continuity, gradual change, and revolution that together form a 'braided' history. Linking the interpretative chapters are intriguing brief expositions on time travel, time cycles, time lines and time pieces, showing readers the different ways in which human history has been located in time. In its global approach the book is part of the new shift towards 'big history', in which traditional period divisions are challenged in favour of looking again at the entire past of the world from start to end. The approach is thematic. The result is a view of world history in which outcomes are shown to be explicable, once they happen, but not necessarily predictable before they do. This book will inform the work of historians of all periods and at all levels, and contributes to the current reconsideration of traditional period divisions (such as Modernity and Postmodernity), which the author finds outmoded.

Book Revisioning Beckett

Download or read book Revisioning Beckett written by S. E. Gontarski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisioning Beckett reassesses Beckett's career and literary output, particularly his engagement with what might be called decadent modernism. Gontarski approaches Beckett from multiple viewpoints: from his running afoul of the Irish Censorship of Publications Acts in the 1930s through the 1950s, his preoccupations to “find literature in the pornography, or beneath the pornography,” his battles with the Lord Chamberlain in the mid-1950s over London stagings of his first two plays, and his close professional and personal associations with publishers who celebrated the work of the demimonde. Much of that term encompasses an opening to the fullness of human experience denied in previous centuries, and much of that has been sexual or decadent. As Gontarski shows, the aesthetics that emerges from such early career encounters and associations continues to inform Beckett's work and develops into experimental modes that upend literary models and middle-class values, an aesthetics that, furthermore, has inspired any number of visual artists to re-vision Beckett.

Book excerpt: From its origins in the University of Birmingham’s then Institute of Education in 1948, Educational Review has emerged as a leading international journal for generic educational research. Seventy-five years on, Mapping the Field presents a detailed account of education theory and research, policy, and practice through the lens of some of the key articles published in the journal over this timespan. The Foreword written by the journal’s editors in Volume I presents a comprehensive account of the changing context for education scholarship and plots the key events in the development of the journal. The articles in Part I discuss some of the underpinning theories and research methodologies which have guided education researchers and practitioners, both past and present. Parts II and III focus on politics and policymaking in education and on the challenges involved in managing educational practice. The articles included in both volumes of Mapping the Field represent a careful selection from the work of scholars whose ideas have been, and continue to be, influential in the field of education. Overall, this major text covers a wide range of topics and offers original insights into educational policy, provision, processes, and practice from around the world.

Book Censorship of Historical Thought

Download or read book Censorship of Historical Thought written by Antoon De Baets and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-12-30 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is an important, dangerous, and fragile subject. Historical thought can be censored in widely diverging political and historiographical contexts, as historians are well aware. Yet the problems of censorship, often thought to be obvious, are rarely studied. Filling a significant void, this guide supplies information on the censorship of historical thought and the fate of persecuted historians in over 130 countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and from 1945 to 2000. With each entry providing a chronological overview of cases and giving a full listing of sources, the book is the first systematic effort to overview the repression of historical thought. Aiming to encompass all countries in which censorship and persecution have taken place, De Baets sketches a world map of repression that goes beyond the well-known and well-studied cases. It assembles scattered data from three types of sources: the works of censors and censored, historical and biographical dictionaries and historiographical surveys, and reports from international human rights organizations. Showing the universality of historical censorship and its infinite variety in amount and degree, the book also provides a basis for further comparative research.

Book How to Critique Journal Articles in the Social Sciences

Download or read book How to Critique Journal Articles in the Social Sciences written by Scott R. Harris and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Critique Journal Articles in the Social Sciences, by Scott R. Harris, is a brief, introductory book that provides readers with a step-by-step guide to reading and understanding a social science research article. The author demonstrates the many strengths of social research, including its advantages over ordinary ways of knowing things, and, at the same time, points out that research is inevitably flawed. Rather than naively assuming that good research simply produces “The Truth” or cynically asserting that research is hopelessly biased and futile, this book instills in readers a critical perspective—one that appreciates the strengths and weaknesses of any piece of scholarship.
