Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tribes on the Frontier of Burma The chairman, lieut.-general sir edwin collen, after making announcements as to the future programme of the Society, said Very few words indeed will be necessary by way of introduction of the lecturer, for Sir Frederic Fryer is known to us all as a distinguished administrator, whose early years of service were passed in the Punjab, and who has been connected with the great province of Burma for more than twenty-one years. His first service there dates, I believe, from 1886, and although he returned for a short time to the Punjab, where he filled high offices with great distinction, the services of his later years were chiefly in Burma, where he presided over the administration for an unusually long period. Book The Loyal Karens of Burma Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Loyal Karens of Burma Classic Reprint written by Donald Mackenzie Smeaton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Loyal Karens of Burma Probably few of those who have read the newspaper telegrams and narratives of the rebellion in Lower Burma, are aware that a neglected little nation called Karens, inhabiting the mountains and forests of the province, have been the staunchest and bravest defenders of British rule. but for the loyalty and courage of the Karens, the rebel Burmese and Shans would, in all probability, have overrun Lower Burma. Had the Karens joined in the insurrection, the Queen's Government would, in all probability - for a time, at least - have ceased to exist; communications with Mandalay would have been cut off, and the invading force would have been hemmed in by an armed people fired to fierce resistance by our reverse in the south. What catastrophe might have occurred it is impossible to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
