Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American cities can claim a firefighting history as rich as that of New Jersey's capital. Trenton's first volunteer fire company was organized in 1747 and was followed by more than a dozen other volunteer engine, hose, and hook and ladder companies that protected Trenton until 1892. They were replaced by paid firefighters staffing six engines and two ladders. As the city grew into a major industrial center, the fire department grew with it. Trenton Firefighting tells and honors the story of Trenton's firefighters--both volunteer and paid--and the blazes they have battled, including the 1885 fire that gutted the New Jersey State House, the 1915 conflagration that destroyed the insulated wire mill of John A. Roebling's Sons Company (builder of the Brooklyn Bridge), and the 1975 inferno that razed the historic Trenton Civic Center.

Book Firefighting in Frederick

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of firefighting in Frederick, Maryland, is a complex tale of heroism, sacrifice, and duty that dates back to 1818. Firefighters play a vital role in any time, but it's almost easy to forget the days before mandatory fire safety practices, when most buildings were made of wood, how often the fire department was the only thing to prevent a fire from destroying an entire city. This volume describes the heroic role the fire department has played in defending the city of Frederick for close to two centuries. Highlighted in this work are the Independent Hose Company, Junior Fire Company, United Steam Fire Engine Company, Citizen's Truck Company, Fort Detrick Fire Department, as well as historic fires, emergency medical services, and major disasters throughout the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houston's firefighting service began in 1838 with the founding of Protection Fire Company No. 1. As the city of Houston grew throughout the early and mid-19th century, volunteer companies formed and grew along with it. By 1895, city leaders decided to form the Houston Fire Department as a city department, culling the volunteer forces for men, stations, apparatus, and horses. The city grew in leaps and bounds, swallowing up neighborhoods, communities, and smaller cities along the way, with the fire department nipping at their heels. This brave force battled devastating fires throughout the years, most notably the Great Fifth Ward Fire in 1912, the 1943 Gulf Hotel Fire, the Woodway Square Apartment Conflagration in 1979 and the Southwest Inn Fire in 2013. What was once a smattering of volunteer fire brigades has grown into an imposing force of over 3,000 firefighters protecting over two million people in the fourth largest city in the United States.
