This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drumm Seed and Floral Co., 1929 Owing to an ever-increasing demand for advice along the line of landscape work, we were, a few years ago, forced to add a landscape department to our business. That such a department was not added any too soon has been abundantly proven by the many calls and demands made upon us from our city and from surrounding cities and states as well. While it is usually very difficult to give, proper advice by mail without having seen the place to be beautified, yet it is possible to give many helpful hints, if the place has been fairly well described in letter of inquiry. Of course it is always better to send our experienced landscape architect right to the place. In our landscape department we have adopted and try our best to live up to the motto: What is worth doing at all is worth doing well. For that reason we employ none but the most efficient help, and our stock of trees, flowering shrubs, roses and plants is the very best that can be secured. We handle all the ornamental stock suit able to this part of the country, and we do not advise people to use any but the hardiest and the best. If you contemplate laying out a public park, beautify ing your own private grounds or planting a few things around your little cottage, do not fail to correspond with us and we will be pleased to give you all the information we can. We are perfectly well qualified to execute a large work and we do not despise the small business. We are landscape architects and as such we will be pleased to furnish you plans, estimate of cost, and plant ing list for your parkor home grounds. Book Garden Flower and Field Seeds

Download or read book Garden Flower and Field Seeds written by Springfield Seed Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden, Flower and Field Seeds: Spring 1929 Remember when making a lawn that it is to last for years, and be an ornament to the home, so give plenty of time and care to preparation before seeds are sown. Several weeks before sowing dig the soil deeply, break up the lumps. Apply either Sheep Guano or Vigoro Lawn Fertilizer and rake the top soil. At intervals of ten days or two weeks rake the surface to destroy the weeds, and before sowing have the surface as fine as a rake will make it. Sow half the seeds. Then sow the other half at right angles to the first sowing - this gives an even distribution. After sowing, rake lightly so as not to cover the seeds too deep - covering with a roller is better - small seeds cannot germinate if planted too deep; an eighth of an inch is about right. Do not put stable manure on your lawn, as it adds to the many weeds already in the soil. And if not well broken up the lumps of manure will smother young grass. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beautiful Flowers From Seeds: Fall Season 1928-Spring Season 1929 In all but the coldest sections of the country the seeds of all perennials here offered may be sown right outside, but being m'ost careful to keep the seed bed shaded from the hot August and September sun. This can be easily accomplished by shading the bed with overhead canvas or strips of lath during the hottest part of the day; you must be most careful to keep the seed bed moist and the soil from baking; once a dry crust has formed, or you have forgotten to water properly at the critical time when the germs develop, it will be good-night to your seeds and some folks will work up another case against their seedsman! On the other hand, avoid too wet a con dition; don't sprinkle with a hose for you are apt to wash the seeds out of the ground, and do not - do not -bury your seeds to deeply into the soil; some fine seeds, such as from poppies, Pentstemons, Petunias, etc., should be mixed with a little dry soil or sand, and then merely pressed into the soil with a board or the palm of your hand. Too deep planting prob ably accounts for 90% of failures with flower seed. Growing plants from seed is an easy matter, and a most charming and fascinating pastime, but you must use good judgment and some care. You may rest assured at the outset, and fasten that fact in' your mind, that your responsible seedsman, whose reputation is at stake, and who wants your good will always, and who is in the game mostly for the love of it (i refer to individuals, not big corpora tions), 'will go considerably out of his way to see to it that the seed he sells you are of the very best quality. I am more disappointed than you are when you don't succeed with the seed I sent you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Griffing's Tree and Plant Book, 1929 Do not use unrotted stable manure or compost fertilizer when trees are planted. A few pounds of bone meal or a few shovelfuls of well-rotted stable manure can be used at the bottom of the hole with good results at the time trees are planted. Best results with unrotted manure are attained by using it as a mulch, after the trees are planted. Commercial fertilizer should be used when trees start-to bud out. It is applied by digging a trench around the tree or plant, a few inches past the end of the newly planted roots. Then fill trench to cover the fertilizer.
