But the post mortem reveals otherwise. Solicitor Benedicta 'Ben' O'Keeffe is acting for the owners of the church, and although an unwelcome face from her past makes her reluctant to get involved initially, when Conor's brother dies in strange circumstances shortly after coming to see her, she finds herself drawn in to the mystery. Whose is the skeleton in the crypt and how did it get there? Is Conor Devitt still alive, and if so is there a link? What happened on the morning of his wedding to make him disappear? Book Complete Short Stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Complete Short Stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne Illustrated Edition written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-06 with total page 2870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Complete Short Stories" is a literary masterpiece that showcases his unique style of dark romanticism and exploration of themes such as sin, guilt, and the supernatural. Each story is expertly crafted with intricate symbolism and moral ambiguity, making it a thought-provoking read that delves into the complexities of the human psyche. The collection includes classics like "The Minister's Black Veil" and "Young Goodman Brown", providing a comprehensive look at Hawthorne's narrative prowess and thematic depth within the short story genre. This illustrated edition enhances the reader's experience by visually capturing the haunting atmosphere of Hawthorne's tales. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a prominent American author of the 19th century, drew inspiration from his Puritan heritage and fascination with the human condition to create his gripping narratives. His background in Transcendentalism and his own personal struggles with guilt and sin heavily influenced his writing, giving his stories a profound and introspective quality. Hawthorne's ability to interweave moral ambiguity with poetic prose sets him apart as a literary giant of his time. I highly recommend "Complete Short Stories" to readers who enjoy thought-provoking literature that explores the darker aspects of human nature. Hawthorne's masterful storytelling and captivating themes make this collection a must-read for anyone interested in delving into the complexities of the human experience.

Book The Self The Soul and The World Affect Reason and Complexity

Download or read book The Self The Soul and The World Affect Reason and Complexity written by Avijit Lahiri and published by Avijit Lahiri. This book was released on 2023-10-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the affective-cognitive roots of how the human mind inquires into the workings of nature and, more generally, how the mind confronts reality. Reality is an infinitely complex system, in virtue of which the mind can comprehend it only in bits and pieces, by making up interpretations of the myriads of signals received from the world by way of integrating those with information stored from the past. This constitutes a piecemeal interpretation by which we assemble our phenomenal reality. In perceiving the complex world and responding to it, the mind invokes the logic of affect and the logic of reason, the former mostly innate and implicit, and the latter generated consciously in explicit terms with reference to mind-independent relations between entities in nature. It is a strange combination of affect and reason that enables us to make decisions and inferences, --- the latter mostly of the inductive type --- thereby making possible the development of theories. Theories are our tool-kits for explaining and predicting phenomena, guiding us along in our journey in life. Theories, however, are defeasible, and need to be constantly updated, at times even radically. In this, the self and the soul are of enormous relevance. The former is the affect-based psychological engine driving all our mental processes, while the latter is the capacity of the conscious mind to examine and reconstruct the self by modulating repressed conflicts. If the soul remains inoperative, all our theories become misdirected and a rot spreads inexorably all around us.

Book Asian Anthology New Writing Vol 1

Download or read book Asian Anthology New Writing Vol 1 written by Ivy Ngeow and published by Leopard Print. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crocodiles in the city, street food fandom, a psychic club meeting in a Penang beach resort. Asian Anthology: New Writing Vol. 1 is a showcase of short stories and place writing by both new and more established prize-winning writers. Some unexpected, a few surreal and others traditional, these are 23 compelling stories of irony, humanity and satire, exploring a range of subject matter to reveal a glimpse of modern Asian society and culture: a funeral in India, a hotel encounter in Japan, a sleepless night in Hong Kong. Modern themes such as the chilling consequences of the environmental impact of logging, deforestation and the barbarism of the shark’s fin soup delicacy press on our collective conscience. In the pieces on place writing, the outsider’s view gives insight into the white-guy-in-Asia trope: backpacker, courier and expat company manager. But no Asian fiction is complete without stories of food, family conflict, redemption and reconciliation. Surprising and entertaining, this anthology captures the paradox of richness, diversity and humor that is Asian culture. Discover fascinating new writing set in Asia today. Book More Lives Than One

Download or read book More Lives Than One written by Claude Bragdon and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-11-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Americans have had as many creative lives as Claude Bragdon who designed theatrical sets and churches, who dabbled in theosophy and the occult, who wrote about it all with spirit, passion, and penetrating insight. Here, in delightfully effervescent prose, Bragdon tells the story of his life-or lives. From his Personal Life ("Born under the constellation Leo, the heart sign, I was never long out of love") to his Occult Life ("I frightened [my mother] by declaring that I was the chosen vessel for the pouring out of a new revelation upon mankind"), Bragdon is surprisingly frank, frequently hilarious, and always wonderfully self-deprecating. First published in 1917, this is an intimate dispatch from a true American character. Other works by Bragdon available from Cosimo Classics: The Beautiful Necessity, Architecture and Democracy, Episodes from An Unwritten History, and A Primer of Higher Space (The Fourth Dimension). American architect, stage designer, and writer CLAUDE FAYETTE BRAGDON (1866-1946) helped found the Rochester Architectural Club, in the city where he made his greatest mark as a building designer with structures including Rochester Central Station, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the First Universalist Church; he also designed Peterborough Bridge in Ontario. In later life, Bragdon worked on Broadway as scenic designer for 1930s productions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Hamlet, among others.
