Download or read book Treacherous Journey Through the Philippines written by Peter Robinson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel was previously published under the title MY STORY IN THE PHILIPPINES IN FIRST PERSON, which proved to be an awkward title and was rightfully criticized. So I decided to republish the story under a new, more appropriate name, TREACHEROUS JOURNEY THROUGH THE PHILIPPINES, but only after thoroughly editing the wording of the text. Because the story line was recognized as being interesting and flowing, nothing else was changed except for my adding sketches at critical sections. My wife, Nelle, encouraged me to write a novel but passed away in 1992. She always wanted to help. The book may have suffered because she was unable to contribute her clear language. She always contended that in writing fiction, she could invent a story as interesting as one that occurred in real life. I believed her. She certainly was an entertaining conversationalist and had a lighthearted, devilish way of concocting a yarn. The plot for TREACHEROUS takes you to locations actually visited by the author. However, the characters and events are fictional. Larry Bulger is not meant to be Peter Robinson. Larry Bulger jumped headlong into treacherous circumstances. Peter Robinsons nature would be to circumvent the dangers presented by adversaries in the story. Perhaps Larry was a person Peter would like to be. The historical facts, such as Japanese General Yamashita pillaging Southeast Asia for treasure during WWII and hiding portions of the loot in the Philippines, are true but twisted somewhat for the convenience of the plot. The corruption of the Marcos regime is based on commonly repeated rumors that were prevalent at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let me introduce myself. My name is Larry Moffat, an American expatriate. In my mind, I think of myself as an adventurer, seeking excitement in an exotic foreign land, more precisely, in the Philippines. A few years earlier, this was a true assessment of my life. Presently, at thirty-nine years old, I find myself settled into the commonplace existence of a workaday and a married man with a wife and two small children. Although I am still in the Philippines, employed by the same worldwide engineering company—Richardson, Schellinberger, and Haas Inc. (RSHI)—my life has been altered under new circumstances. It was while with this firm that I found myself constantly involved with devious plots of miscreants that continually endangered my life. But in time, as my duties evolved with RSHI, I became more settled. I no longer am cast into intriguing events that characterized my life in earlier years. Even travel within the country has been curtailed by added demands on my time resulting from responsibilities as manager of RSHI’s regional office comprising all of Southeast Asia. This greatly limits my access to sources for adventure.

Book excerpt: The book is a novel, mostly in dialogue, between a Swedish pensioner Johan and the strongly Catholic believer, young, beautiful, and vulnerable Filipino mother of many children, Lymene, who is in the Philippines under another name. Lymene wants to be called Mary because she adores the Virgin Mary of all her heart. In the hard daily life, Lymene is under the strict control of her father-in-law, the rigorous Catholic patriarch, Father Alberto Notchea, and the whole family, friends, and relatives. When Johan, whom she has known for many years, this time comes on a quick visit, Lymene is forced by Father Alberto Notchea to wear a chastity belt but still, controlled by a strictly global digitized encrypted system, is allowed to go with him on a trip from the Philippines via Thailand, further across the Eurasian continent to Sweden where, for better or worse, she gets to experience a country in political chaos and with a different moral view than the one that exists in her home country. On the way back to the Philippines, Mary and Johan fly together over Catholic Poland further into orthodox re-Christianized Russia, where Eurasianism is in a dramatic confrontation with Globalism. Then, finally, the journey goes via Malaysia back to the Philippines, where everything gets a theatrical and unexpected solution.

Download or read book Under a Blood Red Sun written by John J. Domagalski and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the opening days of World War II in the Pacific, a small group of American sailors in the Philippines were propelled into the forefront of the fighting. They were manned with six small wooden torpedo (PT) boats and led by a courageous, larger-than-life character in Lieutenant John D. Bulkeley. The men of Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 faced insurmountable odds as they conducted a series of heroic operations against the navy and air power of Imperial Japan. As AmericaÕs defense of the Philippines crumbled under the weight of a massive Japanese assault, the courageous activities of BulkeleyÕs men made headlines across the U.S.Ñoften as the only good news coming from the bleak Pacific front. The unit achieved everlasting fame by evacuating General Douglas MacArthur from the front. Then the squadron continued to fight on until all six of its torpedo boats were lost under fire. The fate of the doomed American defenders was sealed when the Japanese won the battle for the islands in the spring of 1942. The exploits of the unit were immortalized in the blockbuster 1945 movie They Were Expendable, starring John Wayne and Robert Montgomery, but since then the saga of Bulkeley and his men has slipped into history. Under a Blood Red Sun revives the story of the Philippine PT-boats through the intertwined accounts of Bulkeley and his subordinate officers and men. It is a story of the courage and sacrifice of men thousands of miles from their homeland, representing American gallantry and fighting prowess, while giving the Japanese a taste of what was further to come their way.

Download or read book Farm to Freedom written by Roy Vu and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home gardens, in addition to providing sustenance and satisfaction, embody a sense of self identity. In this groundbreaking work on Vietnamese foodways, Farm-to-Freedom: Vietnamese Americans and Their Food Gardens brings to light how the Vietnamese diasporic population in Texas uses gardens literally and figuratively to set down roots in a new country. These gardens, often hidden in plain sight, establish the seat of Vietnamese immigrant culture, according to author Roy Vũ. They can also offer Vietnamese Americans an empowering pathway to forging a new homeland duality by retaining ties to the foods and environs they drew comfort from in Vietnam. Farm-to-Freedom uses the concept of emancipatory foodways as a lens into gardens that serve a semi-palliative purpose by succoring the experienced tragedies of war and exile for Vietnamese immigrants and Vietnamese Americans, which arguably adds another dimension to the importance of the home garden. Vũ covers topics including but not limited to culinary citizenship, food democracy, culinary justice, and food sovereignty. Farm-to-Freedom reveals how these gardens not only provide those who tend them a greater sense of security and agency in an unfamiliar land but also give them the means to preserve and expand Vietnamese cuisine for themselves while simultaneously enriching food culture in the United States. With a wealth of original oral histories, community-based recipes and poetry, and photographs of home gardens in suburban and urban settings, Farm-to-Freedom provides a deeper understanding of the Vietnamese diaspora in Texas for scholars, professionals, and general readers alike.
