Book Tobias Smollett in the Enlightenment

Download or read book Tobias Smollett in the Enlightenment written by Richard J. Jones and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) is best known today as a novelist, but in the eighteenth-century, he was regarded as a historian and critic. In this book, Richard J. Jones explores the diversity of Smollett's journalistic and literary writings and establishes new connections between Smollett's work and writers of the Scottish Enlightenment. The book takes as its focal point Smollett's visit to Nice, between 1763 and 1765, and the account he wrote of it in Travels through France and Italy (1766). This account is usually seen as a "travel narrative" but Jones argues that it should be read as a "pocket encyclopedia" in the tradition of Voltaire. Jones divides his study into sections on medicine, fine art, the theater and history. In doing so, he offers a productive juxtaposition of authors, texts and contexts, presenting Smollett as a writer whose Scottish (and particularly Glaswegian) identity informed his involvement in a wider European Enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 42, following the death of his 15-year-old daughter and in failing health, Tobias Smollett embarked on a yearlong journey through France and Italy in 1763. Written as a series of letters, Travels in France and Italy describes in a delightfully grouchy manner his miserable experiences in each and every city he visited. Described by some as the "champion bad traveler," Smolett argues with his hosts and fellow travelers and holds in contempt not only French and Italian art and politics, but the Catholic religion as well. The intolerance and prejudice he displays makes for what critics call a thoroughly entertaining and perceptive travel book.TOBIAS GEORGE SMOLLETT (1721-1771) was a Scottish author best known for his picaresque novels about the adventures and expeditions of such characters as Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, and Humphrey Clinker. He was educated as a surgeon, joined the Navy, and began writing, all without much success. His whole life seemed to be a series of turns for the worst. His last words are said to have been "All is well, my dear."

Book excerpt: In 1763 Tobias Smollett set sail from Folkestone to Boulogne. He would not return to England for two years, during which time he travelled extensively - and in a notoriously ill-tempered fashion - through much of France and Italy. Smollett, seemed 'determined to be pleased with nothing' and was 'sardonic, satirical and decidedly gloomy'. In Paris, everything had 'shrunk' and was twice as expensive as his last visit. Versailles was a 'dismal habitation'. In Rome, he felt that Michelangelo's Last Judgement resembled a mob; his inn in San Remo was more miserable than the worst ale-house in England and in Lerici he was sure he would be poisoned.
