All that is most beautiful in Nature and in Art, attest themselves in all that she has written. Her first visit to Europe was made in company with her parents, her eldest sister and her cousin, in the fall of 1858. She returned home in the autumn of the following year: and it is from her journal kept during this period that the first part of the present volume was afterwards written out by her. In August, 1863, she visited China, going by way of California, crossing the Pacific in a sailing ship-the line of steamers not being yet established - and returned home in August of the following year by what is known as the Peninsular and Oriental Overland route, via Singapore, Ceylon, Suez. And Europe - a journey of great interest, encircling the earth. Descriptive letters written at different pomts on this tour form the second part of these records of travel. In November, 1867, in company with her husband and two sisters she re-visited Europe, passing most of the winter in Rome and Naples, and returned in the following June. Her last long journey was undertaken as a great invalid. With the hope of deriving benefit from a sea voyage. In September, 1875. With her husband and their two children - Henry Trowbridge, born April i5th, 1870, and William Bradford, born June 2sth 1872 - she sailed from New York for Rio de Janeiro via St. Thomas, Para, Pernambuco, and Bahia. Remaining only a week in Rio the party returned to St Thomas, and crossed to Santa Cruz. Where three months were passed; and in the latter part of February they returned to New York via St. Thomas and St. John. P. R. On these last two journeys no journal was kept. A question, therefore, came up, in preparing the materials for the press, Whether these letters should be enlarged and multiplied so as to place all the matter in the same form; or whether, letting these stand essentially as they were, with the necessary revision and corrections, the additional matter should be thrown into the form of plain narrative. The latter method, as will be seen, has been adopted. This, I know, is rather out of the common course, and may be the cause of a noticeable difierence in the style but it has occurred to me that this may be no objection nay, that perhaps the monotony of one unvaried form may be relieved by the change, and be, at least, no drawback upon the interest of the work. I had much more matter which I might have inserted; but -i have 'made my book already too large, according to the fash ion of the day and fashion will have its influence in the size of a book as well'as in'everything else.
