Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2 No critical estimate could sum up better than the above the characteristics of Arabia Deserta. And it is for the sake of the appeal that this great book should make to a wider audience than the few who feel enthusiasm for Arab things that I have sought and obtained the author's sanction to make the abridgment of his narrative here presented. It is, indeed, in the conviction that the book has only to become known to the English public to be hailed by all for what it is - a masterpiece second to none in our literature of travel - that I have attempted the task of abridgment. And here the writer must confess that he knows no other book of travel which makes him so proud that the author is an Englishman. Gentleness, courage, humanity, endurance, and the insight of genius, these were the qualities that carried Doughty safely through his strange achievement of adventuring alone, a professed Chris tian, amid the fanatical Arabians. That he proclaimed his race and faith wherever he went is a supreme testimony to the firm ness of his spirit and to the magnetism of a frank and mild nature that evoked so often in response the humanity underlying the Arabs' fanaticism. His narrative, indeed, testifies how much milk of human kindness the solitary stranger could count upon finding in the breast of all but the most fanatical Mohammedans. But it is surely less the author's valuable discoveries than the intense human interest of his book that will bring him enduring fame What an unforgettable picture it is, that of this Englishman of an old-fashioned stamp adventuring alone for many long months in the deserts of Arabia, going each day not very sure of his life, yet obstinately proclaiming to all men, to sheykhs and shepherds, to fanatical tribesmen in every encampment, that he is a N asrany, a Christian With a pistol hidden in his bosom, and a few gold pieces in his purse, with a sack of clothes and books and drugs thrown on the hired camel of his rafiks, or wandering guides. Book Travels in the East Including a Journey in the Holy Land Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in the East, Including a Journey in the Holy Land, Vol. 1 The notes which I have here consented to give to the public have none of these merits. I yield them with regret; they are merely in the shape of recollections for myself, and were destined for that purpose alone. There is nothing of science, history, geography, or manners in them - the public was far from my thoughts when I wrote them - and how did I write them? Sometimes at noon, during the mid-day repose, under the shade of a palm-tree, or under the ruins of a monument in the desert more often in the evening beneath a tent, beaten by the wind and rain, by the light of a torch of resin; one day in the cell of a Maro nite convent on Lebanon another day amid the rolling of an Arab boat, or upon the deck of a brig, in the midst of the shouts of sailors, neighing of horses, interruptions and distractions of all sorts by land and sea; sometimes eight days without writing at all; at other times losing the scattered pages of an album, torn by jackals, or steeped in the brine of the sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains two essays delivered by Edward Clodd to the Royal Institution and originally published in “The Hibbert Journal”. Within the lectures, he displays an obvious scepticism of occultism but also presents a serious attempt to understand rather than criticise. Highly recommend for those with an interest in science and the occult. Edward Clodd (1840 – 1930) was an English writer, banker, and anthropologist famous for his various and notable literary and scientific friends, including the likes of Edward Fitzgerald, Samuel Butler, Andrew Lang, and others. Other notable works by author include: “The Childhood of the World” (1872), “Jesus of Nazareth” (1880), and “Nature Studies” (1882). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this classic volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition for the enjoyment of literature lovers now and for years to come.

Book Explorations in Doughty s Arabia Deserta

Download or read book Explorations in Doughty s Arabia Deserta written by Stephen E. Tabachnick and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Montagu Doughty's Travels in Arabia Deserta (1888) is remarkable for its scientific evelations and brilliantly unique style—an artful combination of Arabic and English syntax and diction that rendered a foreign way of life and thought and depicted a distant landscape of stark, barren beauty. The ten original essays in this book examine many aspects of Arabia Deserta, including its Victorian characteristics and aesthetics; its blend of fact and fantasy; its portrayal of Arab society and of Doughty himself; and the accuracy of its geographical, geological, archaeological, historical, and ethnographical observations. Additionally, the book's introduction and two bibliographies probe Arabia Deserta's reception, unique position in the genre of travel literature, and bibliographical history. During the grueling twenty-one-month journey narrated in Arabia Deserta, Doughty endured periods of sickness and near-famine, a series of treacherous guides, attack by a mob, and virtual imprisonment by a corrupt Turkish commandant. Celebrating this epic of scholarship and survival, Explorations in Doughty's "Arabia Deserta" maps the contours of a work that T. E. Lawrence, who had followed Doughty's path to Arabia, called "a book not like other books, but something particular, a bible of its kind."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels of Doctor and Madame Helfer, Vol. 1 of 2: In Syria, Mesopotamia, Burmah and Other Lands This memoir and autobiography derives increased interest from the exciting narrative of the Euphrates Expedition, under the late General, then Colonel Chesney, in which helfer and his wife took part, as well as from the graphic and lively descriptions of the life of Oriental women, into the mysteries of which a lady traveller could obtain glimpses denied to a man.
